Rain seemed to be the jinx for the Warriors this season. After scoring points and yielding zero points, the Warriors lost a muddy battle to Turtle Lake. After an impressive victory over Cameron, and a dramatic come-from-behind Homecoming victory the Warriors lost to Shell Lake in the rain, sleet and mud. Bruce--rain, mud; behind with seconds to go; Craig Mitchell plunges over from the two and the jinx is broken. With this win the Warriors capture second place in the Lakeland Conference. 25 SENIOR GRADS: Craig Benson, Jeff Healy, Craig Mitchell, Kelly Hilton, Bruce Moore, Jason Jentzsch. Craig and Tim Mitchell each won individual championships; Scott Hilton and Russ Paulson placed second; Mike Drier placed third, while Brian Anderson placed fourth. STATE ENTRIES: Scott and Craig Led by coaches Zauft and Griffin, the Warriors won many honors for themselves and C. L, H. S. Craig Mitchell won his way to state again this year with a 30-0 record, pinning 22 opponents. Freshman Scott Hilton went to state. Russell Paulson was Regional Champ. Craig, Scott and Tim Mitchell were Conference champs. The Warriors brand of aggressive wrestling is slowly convincing fans that it is a major high school sport, not just that other winter sport. SECOND ROW: Mr. Koerper, Scott Moore, Steve Evenson, Ralph Anderson, Tom Clark, Mark Tellijohn. The 70-71 basketball season started off on a disappointing note, with a loss to a tough Boyceville team. After that initial loss, the team seems to jell and put together a twenty-two game winning streak, including a 10-0 record in the Conference. Also included in this streak was a return match with Boyceville which saw the Warriors soundly avenge their only defeat of the year at that time. The Warriors did not even seem to have a close match until the last game of the season, when they overcame St. Croix Falls in a contest seeing both teams in foul trouble. The jinx which seemed to keep the Warriors from beating the same team three times in one season was broken as they won the DISTRICT TOURNEY by defeating both Clayton and Turtle Lake. Then it was up to Luck for the Regional Tourney. 31 Excitement mounted throughout the week before the great migration of fans to the Spooner sectional. This excitement seemed evident in the Warrior play and a good Colfax team turned this into a seven-point halftime advantage. A determined Warrior effort tied the score 60-60 by the end of regulation time. The first overtime settled nothing. In the second overtime neither team could score until with ten seconds left Colfax was awarded two free throws. The first attempt failed, but the second try was good. In the next ten seconds all five Warrior players handled the ball in a play climaxed by Jeff Healy scoring on a lay-up. The buzzer sounded as the ball hit the floor and a jubilant group of Clear Lake fans poured onto the floor. After this exciting battle, the next night's game would have to be anti-climatic; or so everyone thought. Another poor start put the Warriors nine points behind the Beavers of Cumberland at halftime. The Warriors fought back desperately in the second half, and were able to close the gap to three at one point. But the strain of the night before had taken its toll, and the Warrior victory trail came to an end. s p 0 0 n e r s e c t • i 0 n a 1 s 1971 baseball FRONT ROW: Bruce Moore, Roger Blanchard, Brian Anderson, Jeff Healy, Tom Clark, Jan Weiss. Now is the time when they must decide what they must do in the future. They must make new friends, learn new things and meet new challenges. So with this the underclassmen of the 1971 Graduation class would like to take this opportunity to wish you all the best of luck in your future.
