Under the efficient instruction of Mrs. Jones, the girls of C.L.U.H. are very effectively instructed in the various phases of homemaking. There are seven phases taught in this school and they include the study of foods, clothing, health, housing, children, relationships, and manage- ment. These different phases are so divided that they require three years of study to cover them. To further the efficiency of the homemaking department some new appliances have recently been added. They are as follows: two electric stoves, on automatic washer, a dryer, and two sewing machines. These appliances make it easier to finish the required work in each class. The department has three unit kitchens. Each kitchen is so arranged that groups of four to six girls can work in each kitchen. Through movies, filmstrips, demonstrations and lectures by outside speakers the homemaking course is made broader and more interesting. Standing left to right C. Brown, D. Edwards, Y. Marston, B. 4514474 Industrial Art was introduced for the first time this year at Clear Lake Union High in the form of general shop classes..There are approximately forty-five boys enrolled. Those boys who have had no previous shop experience are allowed one period a day. Boys who have had agriculture shop experience or other shop experience are permitted to take two periods a day. There were a few iobs around the school that needed to be doneiso the boys in shop were called upon to do them. Two of those jobs included the making of music stands for the band and carrying cases for the band hats. The individual projects were primarily woodworking jobs, such as radio cabinets, record cabinets, end tables, lawn chairs, wall shelves, bed-side stands, coffee tables, stock feeders, bookends, gun cabinets, gun racks, and book cases. Some very nice nut bowls and fruit dishes were turned out on the lathe. Some time was spent in improving the physical set-up in the building by making tool panels and similar items necessary to have a well run industrial arts program. Picture l: W. Furtado welding a metal strip. Picture 2: Mr. Davis shows B. Hickok what finished products should look like. Picture 3: When they are done L. McDaniel will have a radio cabinet, J. Stedman will have a book case and S. Ledbetter will have an end table. Picture 4: J. Dimauro puts finishing touches on his cabinet.
