Larry Christman, Howard Miller, and Judy Spillane joined the class later that same year. IN 1948-49, AS SECOND GRADERS, THE CLASS FELT THEY The class at C.C. decreased to the original 14, since Larry Christman, Howard Miller, and Judy Spillane did not return, all were familiar with Mrs. Smith, but annoyed with the infant-like first graders, popsicle sticks were a popular co1lector's item. THIRD GRADE SEEMED DIFFERENT, WITH A NEW ROOM, A The Class of '59 increased by 5 in 1949-50, Freida Allman, John Bushee, Jerry Chapin, Sondra Sterzel, and Jerry Salters. This year the class had a MAN for a teacher, but the pupils soon learned that men are people, too, as they learned to know and have fun with Mr. Claude Keller. Marilyn Tho- mas moved away before the class started its 3rd year. 13 boys and girls, dressed in their good clothes and best behavior, were met by Mrs. Hazel Ebyg they were Karen Crago, Norma Deemer, Larry Dixon, Johnny Fisher, Galen Lahr, Gary Meyer, Andrea Prilaman, Karen Prilaman, Monte Schenkel, Chester Simms, Jean Smith, Tom West, Margie Wohlford. A busy year of getting acquainted and learning the alphabet followed. Chester Simms left. WERE REALLY ADVANCED STUDENTS. Jimmy Chaplin, Rodney Funk, and Virginia Wood joined the class at Bippus, while Johnny Fisher left the group, so there were 14. When the teacher, Mrs. Eby, left for an operation, the replacement, Mrs. Weist, told the class many interesting stories. NEW TEACHER, AND GROWING INDEPENDENCE. Students leaving the class of '59 were: Jimmy Chaplin and Gary Meyer, while Judy Widup and Kent Krumanaker joined it. A11 liked the teacher, Mrs. Alice Swihart, so were very sad when she died that spring. Mrs. Ernest Schenkel and Mrs. Frances Mc- Daniel took her place. A nain ride to Wabash was the highlight of the year. IN 1950-51, THE FOURTH GRADERS OF BOTH SCHOOLS MET THEIR TEACHER WITH ASSURANCE. A man-teacher was no longer a novelty, and Mr. Claude Keller was again the teacher of the 18 in the class--Tom Clapp, Rosalyn Jennings, and Jean Ulrich took the seats vacated by Jerry Chapin, Mickey Fitz- patrick, and Joyce Williams. The class members were eagerly awaiting the fifth grade and prospects of grade basketball and girls' softball games. Karen Crago, Kent Krumanaker, Virginia Wood, and Rodney Funk left the class, leaving 10 members. Mrs. McDaniel was again teaching the class, she got some pet hamsters, and it was fun to feed and care for them, but woe be to fingers close enough to be bitten. The class looked forward to 5th grade, but had heard Mr. W. was a 'real tough teacher. WHILE FIFTH GRADERS, PUPILS AT BIPPUS AND CLEAR CREEK BECAME VERY SPORTS -MINDED AS THEY BEGAN INTER-SCHOOL BALL GAMES WITH EACH OTHER. At C.C. , in 1951-52, Mr. Kenneth Templeton was foreman of the Fifth Division of the brain factory. Ronald Meyer, William Shafer, and Ethel Walters filled the vacant places of John Bushee and Jean Ul- rich, so the class number swelled to 19 members. The 10 pupils at Bippus soon had the addition of Pete Miniear and Karen Crago, Judy Widup left the group. All enjoyed Mr. Walter Whitacre for a teach- er, lessons were harder, but monitors were elected from honor roll pupils, all worked for that honor, ping pong, jokes, and songs added to a happy year. AS THE CLASS BEGAN ITS SIXTH YEAR AND REALIZED IT WAS ALMOST HALFWAY THROUGH SCHOOL, IT REALLY FELT IMPORT ANT AND WANTED EVERYONE TO KNOW ABOUT ITS ACHIEVEMENTS. There were happy exclamations Qmingled with There were still 11 students in the class at Bippus, a few groansy as the 6th grade realized that Mr. Claude with Mr. Whitacre as teacher. The fifth grade planned Keller was its teacher again--he had been promoted a graduation, complete with caps, diplomas, and a to the 5th and 6th grades, as teacher. The class mem- party, for the 6th grade who were finally getting up bership was only 15, because Freida Allman, Tom Clapp, in the world--they would be upstairs next year. There Jerry Salters, and Ethel Walters had all left, and no one was also a trip to Ft. Wayne to see many interesting came to take their places. things. .at ,., .- , N.--. . -0...-ar.,,rfvf.4 - --1-ft. -...rx ,gfx 1 1.11-.Jan-far-nn. ew.: su. . an-:va-rzsnal-uqzuazrzzmran .v , ..w.1-11.5. -..T THE CLASS OF '59 EXCITEDLY ADVANCED TO JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL AND, ALTHOUGH THEY WERE CONFUSED ABOUT WHERE TO GO, AND WHEN, IT DIDN'T TAKE LONG TO GET INTO THE SWING OF THINGS. The class membership for this 7th year dropped to 14 when William Shafer left it. Everyone was proud of the junior high basketball team which was Runner-up in the Junior High Tournament. Class sponsor was Mr. Henry J. Hunt, while M. Dale Butt was the principal. While the 'lth graders felt important, they sometimes stood in the hall until told where to go by Mr. Tilson King, principal. With Mr. Robert Elsmere as sponsor, membership remained at 11--the class lost Pete Miniear and gained Dawn Mooney. The death of Ronald Garber, math teacher, saddened all. AS EIGHTH GRADERS THE CLASS STARTED THE YEAR WITH LOTS OF CONFIDENCE, FEELING HIGHLY SUPERIOR TO THE LOWLY SEVENTH GRADE, BUT MOST LY THEY WERE JUST WAITING TO BECOME FRESHMEN. There were still 14 in the class at C,C, --Sondra Stetzel left, Jean Ulrich replaced her, the class sponsor was again Mr. Hunt. With Mr. Elsmere as sponsor, membership stood at 11, at Bippus. Vernon Fletcher joined the class, but left soon. Mr. Shipman, history teacher, took the class to Lafayette to see historical sites. IN AUGUST, 1955, THE BIG YEAR HAD ARRIVED! THE CLASS WERE FRESHMEN! THEY WERE REALLY A SIGHT ON INITIATION DAY, BUT FRESHMAN YEAR IS SOMETHING THE CLASS WILL NEVER FORGET. Class membership remained the same at C,C,g Mr. Philip Lahr was sponsor, and the class began earning money with bake sales and a skating party. The year was magnificently capped when the Bulldogs won the Sectional Basketball Tournament and were Runners-up in the Regional at Marion. After such a thrill every- thing else seemed quite calm. Larry Dixon, who had been with the class since the lst grade, left to go to Huntington, but Jane Herrberg joined the class, so membership remained at 11. The sponsor, Miss Joan Humbarger, left Bippus during the last of the year, and there were several substitute teach- ers, Rev. Armour Keller among them. Tilson King re- mained as principal. GRADUATION SEEMED CLOSER AS THE CLASS BEGAN ITS SOPHOMORE YEAR AND ORDERED CLASS RINGS. The class lost Carole Sickafoose, who had been an outstanding class member all the previous years, when she moved to Arizona. The unlucky number of 13 didn't dampen the spirits of the class as it plunged full-steam ahead into a profitable scrap drive, bake sales, and a skating party, Mr, Richard Augspurger guided the class as sponsor. The sophomore sponsor at Bippus was Mr. Jack Sell, and the principal was William Freed. Glenn Urschel joined the class, so the number grew to 12. The history class had an eventful pizza party at Norma Deemer's, with motor-scooter and Ford -Convertible rides. Scrap drives proved to be a lot of fun, and the class could scarcely wait for class rings. THE YEAR 1957-58 FOUND THE JUNIORS IN THE TWO SCHOOLS VERY BUSY AND HAPPY. HIGH POINTS OF THE YEAR WERE THE JUNIOR-SENIOR TRIP TO WASHINGTON, D, C, , AND NEW YORK, AND PARTICIPATION AS IUNIORS IN A BACCALAUREATE AND COMMENCEMENT PROGRAM. SENIOR YEAR WAS COMING NEARER. As Juniors, the class again lost a charter member, Kay Smith, the class treasurer, who moved to Green- field, Indiana. Original class members remaining were: Donald Anderson, Donald Brooks, Betty Fulton, Janice Gressley, Lynn Hippensteel, Dolores Keller, Elaine Raichart, Roger Stephens, Larry Davenriner, Rosalyn Jennings, Ronald Meyer, and Jean Ulrich completed the dozen class members. With Mrs. Elsie Kitt direct- ing, the class presented The Magic Touch , Mrs. Ferne Johnson was class sponsorg to fatten its bank ac- count, the class sold magazines and candy, had bake sales and a skating party. Class rings arrived, the juniors and seniors presented The Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come, directed by Mr. Bittner, the class sponsor, Mr. William Freed remained as principal. The class had fun on two scrap drives, and were busy with candy sales. The dozen in the class in- cluded 8 who had been together since the lst grade-- Norma Deemer, Galen Lahr, Andrea Prilaman, Karen Prilaman, Monte Schenkel, Jean Smith, Thomas West, and Margie Wohlford. The other 4 were: Karen Crago, Jane Herrberg, Dawn Mooney, and Glenn Urschel. ' Senior History Continued 1959! HERE WE ARE! SENIORS AT LAST! In the last few years many unsuccessful attempts have been made to land a rocket ship in outer space, today it is possible to land successfully on a recently discovered planet. 1, Jimmy Hoffman, reporter for the well-known, widely distributed Bulldog Bark newspaper, have been sent to cover this spectacular event by my boss, M. D. Butt. Arriving at Mount Canaveral, I was directed to Fordyce's Space Station , much to my surprise it was owned and operated by Mr. Max Fordyce, of C. C, H. S, Talking with him, I learned that he had discovered the planet we were to land on, and had named it Philanderium after his lovely wife. He had built the station with the aid of his former, brilliant student, T. M. West, who was hipped on space exploration, and had dreams of establishing a butcher- shop in outer space. As Mr. Fordyce was called away to attend to last minute details, I struggled through the crowd to find some of the passengers making the first trip. Suddenly, I was thumped on the back, Hi ya, Shorty, I heard you were looking for me. I'm Thomas West at your service. T. M. West! Yes, sir, I was! Whatever prompted you to make this flight? Well, our senior class motto was, TONIGHT WE TAKE OFF, WHERE DO WE LAND, After graduation, I wanted to be somebody, maybe TAKE OFF like the motto said. After Fordyce discovered Philanderium, we decided to go and explore it, we worked building this station for 30 yearsg finally, we're ready to take off. It will mean leaving my twelve kids--I was married 25 years ago, and figured they were cheaper by the dozen. No, I'm not afraid to go. In fact, I'm not going alone. I'm only the pilot for this flight, Fordyce and my classmates, the Graduating Class of 1959 from C,C, H,S, , are accompanying me. They are over there getting into their pressurized space suits. I wandered over toward the group, and it sure is funny, but I did not recognize any of these people. I guess 30 years make quite a change in people. First, I met a rather tall, stocky woman, who had just received her space suit. Upon inquiry, she said, l'm Lynn Hippensteel, and l have been a social worker and nurse here on Earth. I've been asked to go along on this trip to keep peace among the Philanderiums and the Earth people. Then, I interviewed a Mr. Don Brooks. He and Roger Stephens were going to be the first Earth far- mers on Philanderium and create a new breed of chickens by crossing Earth with Phil. chickens. I then talked with a flirtatiously-attractive lady named Rosie Jennings. After dating Earth men 30 years, and finding none who met her standards, she wanted to accompany the adventurous crew in search of a little space man suitable to her standards. This space station is really quite a sight with all the piles of luggage and equipment that is to be taken. Maybe we can find out who belongs to this mountainous pile of trunks. l-i'mmm, on the side of this one, it says, Meyer and Keller Gymnasium Incorporated. Remembering that Ronnie had won world- wide acclaim for weight lifting, and Dolores had coached the World's Champion Girl's Wrestling Team, I decided to find out what connection there could be between the two. Ronnie and Dolores had decided to combine their talents and establish a school to teach all those cute little space people how to protect themselves. Noticing two ladies talking very excitedly, I walked over and asked, Hello, who are you two charm- ing ladies? I'm Jean Smith, and this is my friend, the former Jean Ulrich. Miss Ulrich married a wealthy millionaire, and wanted to make her husband's second million, so we decided to start a flea bank to be operated exclusively for all the rich fleas who can afford to buy their own dogs. These two characters over here look like they have the strangest occupations of all. Thev're both dressed in flaming red uniforms, with hats adorned with tall plumes. They have been trainers of wild animals, and are going to the new planet to start a circus, to be called Anderson and Davenriner's Greatest Show on Philanderium. Anderson will have charge of the training of the elephants, and Daven- riner will care for the monkeys. After wishing them success, I went on to interview a character who was grease from head to foot. He was Galen Lahr. He was to help keep the space ship in good running order. From his greasy face and hands, you can tell he puts his whole self into his work. Next, I saw a group of ladies chatting. Dawn Mooney told me she was a member of the staff of the magazine, DIG, and wanted to be the first to inform the little space people about Pelvis Eresley, Bat Poone, and Nicky Relson. Then there was a very small person, Elaine Raichartg she would be the first telephone operator for Bell Telephone in Outer Space, I talked to a D,D,S, , a tall woman, the former Marcia Shriner, who told me she had married a college boy. She and her husband were going to open Marcy and Kent's Dental Office on the new planet.
