Linda was the best fence-iumper on the whole street. She could even clear that big white splintered fence in McGregor's back yard. Linda was the oldest kid in the neighborhood. She was already eight years old. Anyway, the rest of us iust kind of hung around climbing the ol' fence while we watched Linda iump. And then we all grew up. And no one gives much thought to fences. No one gives much thought to fences until we stop and think what a fence is . . . a barrier A barrier between teacher and student. Perhaps due to uninspired teaching, to a failure to continue learning and experiencing after one has gone to the head of the class. Or a sleeping student who re- fuses to be challenged because he thinks he knows . . . because he does not think. A blank wall. An uninterested view of Future by the graduating sen- ior. Maybe inept guidance, but then, maybe, a timid spirit. Fences. Fences in the form of rationalization. Fences we build in our minds that allow us to ignore the sufferings of others not as fortunate as we. Fences that allow us to see iustice in killing. Fences that breed ignorance and hate. Future Goals Ambitions What could be more to our credit as a Human Being than a broken fence.
