Victory To this end fwe dedicate this book To the Yanks fwlzo died for what they lewd-tlzeir country and the zfnzerican 'way of life. These boys, Only a shOrt time ago, roamed the halls Of CHS and paid frequent visits tO the Dump. We'll remember some as having parts in their Senior play, as basketball captains, Or as Student Council presi- dents, but nO matter how we remember-we'1l always remember. They were taken frOm this earth young, but died bravely, seeking to preserve that which is so dear tO all-freedom. 3 v 5 X L z W 2 ,, Q, an f 1'-1 its-Aa. H... .qvqa wr- nu nm L, A.- 1 gg., M 1 if. VVriter-director-m. c. Ed White and Jim Lester, who is the most capable and versatile musician abroad in these parts in ages, together with a whole raft of other seniors, served up a musical approaching professional dimensions and showing student activities at their all-time best. These figures on the affairseemed rather vital to ns: total two-night attendance, 8555 net profit, 530006. The Senior Play, which comes around every year, came around again this year, appearing in the form of 'fYou Can't Take It VVith You. To quote on the subject no less a critic than Jean Zillman, 1943-44 editor of the CLAMO: C.H.S. Seniors performed the impossible by actually out- doing all their past performances with the presen- tation on Nov. 28 and Nov. 29 of Moss Hart and George Kanfmann's Yon Can't Take It VVith Yon. That's really quite a triek-per- forming the impossible, Hut nothing dannted those Senior actors and, with Blandford Jennings' steadying hand for guidance, they produced a well balanced and pleasing comedy, a trifle weak, perhaps, only in the love interest department. Flex your muscles, children, as we leave the theeatah for the athletic field and floor. Zell, Blum, Kaiser, Garnier-Seniors all- ran and plunged and dribbled and shot for the football and basketball teams. And we arrived at the year's end with a mnnber of victories on grid- iron and court. Unhappily, though, that number is not large, and what is still more unfortunate, we have also amassed a number of losses. lint no use crying over spilt, or rather fumbled pigskins . . . Directing this diversified flock of fonrth year high school men and women was the sober admin- istration of .lim Lester, Senior Class President, Richard Fulgraf, Vice President, Sally Brown, Secretary-Treasnrer and Blandford Jennings, sponsor. In reality there are two clubs, one for the first-year and one for the more advanced students. The purpose of the club is to further relations with the South and Central American countries, and to promote interest in the modern language. Clayton entered a federation with all city and county schools to cele- brate Pan American day April l-lth. The federation is working on the Constitu- tion this year. C. H. S. representatives to the federation are Pat VVolc0tt and Clarence Turley, also the presidents of the second and first year clubs respec- tively. Sally Brown serves as vice-presi- dent for the second-year club, with June Curran as secretary-treasurer. In the first year club, Bill Penny was vice- president, and Marge Deutman was sec- retary-treasurer. Latin lub Founded in the fall of 1932 under the sponsorship of lhliss lVIills and Miss Denny, the Latin Club has always been one of the biggest clubs at Clayton. This year the ofhcers are lIIary Ann lvloore and Chuck Zink, Consulsg Jane Griesc- dieck and Mary lI'Ioss, Quaestorsg Clara l.ouise Flucke, Nina Sue Streepey, and lCtldie Carter, Aediles. The annual Saturnalian Banquet was held December 20th in the C. H. S. cafeteria with the attendance topping IUU peopleg the food and program were on the order of a big Roman feast. The 25-cent-a-semester dues provide for the Latin Club to have an outdoor picnic in the spring. lVIen1bers of the club also celebrate lVIissouri Latin week. T. arsity Football The highlight of the Greyhound football sea- son did not come until thc end of the year, when half-hack Chuck Lohr was chosen for the All- district team. Although he played in only five games, his amazing ground-gaining record of I2 yards per try and all-round play earned him this honor. The rest of the team aided him greatly hy superior blocking and line play. Prospects for a great year were high, when in the lirst two encounters we ran over Kirkwood and highly favored lklaplewood. But the whole story of the Clayton season was told in our game with St. Charles. For here Lohr broke his collar- bone and although the team staved oil many at- tacks, we lost our first conference game and dropped to second place in the Little Five, never to regain the top spot again. 0 if .Again VARSITY BASKETBALL Top mw: Morrow, Frans-y, Ochlf-r. 'S A Ng006!Ay8,, and Ciilefov Qi, as 6 33,3 2551 Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Moore, who reeently sold the lunch room designated by students as the Dump, are shown in the upper photo. Lower photo shows Mr. and Mrs. Roe Robertson, new proprietors. lfaybe the first time you walked in the door, you didn't see what the kids saw in it-THIS DURIP. But soon you discovered the atmosphere was made up of a lot of things, things that became a part of Clayton High. There were the lNIoores-Elmer and VVinnie, who took such an interest in anything the boys and girls did, who were always ready to help you. lwaybe you hadn't thought much about something like kind- ness, but when you did, you knew the lkloores had it. But now they've left, because Nlrs. lkloore was ill, and another couple, the Robertsons, have taken it over. And there were other things about the Dump that you'll remember. The juke box screaming out hot tunes. waiting in line for hot-dogs or hamburgers, the smoke hanging in the air, the laughter, yells, noise of lunch hour and at three o'eloek, those people who played bridge in the back room, the cheery decorations of Christmas, the solemn air of exam cramming. And some- time youid sit there late, drinking a coke and talking to the kids and the lXIoores, or dreamily gazing at your one and only. Those singing ses- sions, remember, right before Christmas? NVhen the boys Came home from the service on leave. they'd Come to the Dump first. As one boy told lVIrs. lkloore, when she asked how his parents were, 'LUh, I haven't seen them yet-naturally, l came to the Dump tirstlu Every day there'd be a different uniform. There was something new in the Dump-that look of seeing boys you knew so well Coming back, not looking quite the same. Yes, we'll always remember the Dump as a part of high school life. l The Senior Closs Photographs in This Issue Were Mode by 1 MARTIN SCHWEIG Fine Photography 4927 Delmar Blvd. ROsedo1e 3000 CLAYTON SUPPLY CUMPANY Quality Fuels . . .
