' Y. l?,..,,...i1'2'1'd7? 57 is McDaniel, L. Shelley and D. Colaner enabled the Mus- tangs to run a 6-2 offense, therefore there was al- ways a blocker, setter and spiker in the front row. This offense, Coach Funkhouser feels, contributed immensely to the success of the lady spikers. Using a fine team effort, the ladies captured second place in the Senate League, and a first ever Sectional cham- pionship, defeating the Ridgewood Generals for the honor. Other season victories were over: Northwest, IVN. East Canton, Carrollton, Coshocton, Sandy Valley. Lake, New Phila, Northwest, East Canton Carrollton, Sandy Valley, Lake and Cambridge. These were the words of Coach Rhonda Funkhouser, referring to the efforts of Claymont's varsity and reserve lady spikers. With a varsity team consisting of seniors Natalie Cot- ton, Teresa Kastor, Becky Hillyer, Pam McDaniel, Melissa Jackson, Debbie Colaner and juniors Leslie Shelley and Lynn Smith, the team compiled an overall record of I9-6. Coach Funkhouser feels that a major part of the Mustang's squad's success this year was due to the return of last year's entire team. One of the most glorious matches of the season was the vic- tory over the state-calibre lVN team. Since the beginnings of volleyball 7 years ago, this is the first time that the lady spikers have defeated IVN, with excellent scores of I5-IO, I6-l8, I5-I. A combina- tion of setter T. Kastor, spiker B. Hillyer and serv- ing ace N. Cotton. and the fine defensive play of M. Jackson, P. I. M. Jackson, L. Smith, N. Cotton, B. Hillyer, D. Colaner, T. Kastor, P. McDaniel. 2.
