Q., This year the Claymont Marching Hundred, under the direction of new head band direc- tor Larry Kelly and assistant band director Bruce Gilmore accomplished some of the greatest feats in marching competitions. The band changed to a soft corps marching style and, for the first time, featured the percus- sion section in competition. On July 28, the band met for the first time to prepare for the upcoming season. It started very soon after that for a trip to the Football Hall of Fame Parade in Canton. lt was then down to the field to prepare for the Ohio State Fair. The band returned with a superior rating-finishing in the top three in their di- vision. At Wadsworth Parade and Field Com- petition the band received a second place in parade and in field and received the out- standing field commander award. At Cadiz, the band was disappointed with a third place in parade and a fifth in field. With the Zanesville Competition the next Satur- day, the band's spirit was low. A Spirit Week took place at school to help the band 122 prepare for Saturday. Everything paid off. The band marched off the field at Zanesville with a first place finish and the first Grand Champion trophy in ten years for Claymont. The season ended October 3l with prepara- tions for a spring trip to Disney World in Florida during Easter vacation. April ll-I6.
