I98I Equestrian Claymont High School Uhrichsville, Ohio 44683 A Note From The Editor: As editor, I wish to thank everyone on this year's yearbook staff. They were a great help, and dedicated a lot of time into putting this book together. I also want to thank everyone in the school who put up with all of our interruptions. I especially want to thank Miss Dunbar for all of her valuable help this year. She was not only a yearbook advisor, but also a great friend. I want to wish the Class of 'Sl and all of the upcoming graduates a long and successful future. Good luck, and God Bless! Classes IO Activities ID Faculty 55 In Memory l6l Sports 68 I D D D I l98O-8l. The year that was, the year of hap- penings. President Ronald Reagan was shot. The American hostages were released from lran. Beatle- great John Lennon was murdered. The Pope was shot. National news did have some big stories, but local news also had its share. The Claymont Lady Mus- tangs basketball team won its first state championship. The Marching Hundred returned from Zanesville with a Grand Championship. The school presented another success- ful musical. The student body and staff pulled together to give two children a Christmas worth re- membering. This is just a sample of the achieve- ments reached at CHS this year. Not all the news was good. Tragedy struck Claymont on March I when two students died of asphyxiation. Sadly missed are Lance Vicers and Carol DeMattio. . -if ' : Q ,-.wijiflf if in K -n W4 l ' P- ff W, , . wif s 4 X 6? A 15 j 5, ,.. if ia.. . , .J .. 5 . Q 3 if-' liiiiii h w The events of this year re- ceived some fine applause from the community and the student body deserves the credit. The participants in all of the sports events showed great sportsman- ship this year and achieved some fine records. Of course the student body was always there to back them up whether it be cheering from the stands participating in Spirit Week or painting signs and decorating doors. They also amazed the Twin Cities with their presenta- tion of The Sound of Mu- sic. The lead roles went to Joe Clauser and Katie Gon- zales, who were supported with a fine cast. IQ sw, Q... y .es J It it . , j lu. - 4. umm Thre were also many out-of-school activi- ties the student body enjoyed. Some par- ticipated in initiation, others played in the pep band and painted murals on the art room walls. Qthers just enjoyed entertain- ing themselves. 4 j ...L uc. Maw Q.. . ' . They went through hard times to- gether, such as the death of their fellow classmate Lance Vickers, and they've been through -many good times. The class achieved some high academics with 34 members graduating as members of the National Honor Society. This is the most to be inducted from one class in Claymont's history. They've seen many changes take place in the teaching staff and school administra- tion. May 24 brought mixed feelings for the sen- iors. Most were sad, for it was the last time the class of '8l was together. But it was also happy, for they have accom- plished a great feat in life and took their first step toward the future. 'Y yyrs . . . Wing l ' ' f- IT K .gf f s i Q I 5 i +f f As for all other students June 6 was the final day. All halls were quiet and the classrooms were empty as preparations were made for the next year. The stu- dents and teachers took a sum- mer break and also prepared for the next year. In August, all events will begin again, and alot of work will be put into everyth- ing to make l982 a year to re- member. They were set on the right track. Now they must keep the wheels rolling and graduate with as much pride as the class of l98l. How will l982 turn out? Well, these teachers' faces seem 'to say it all. I. This was the first season for head coach Ed Henry, who did a fine job with the Mustangs for his rookie season. The Mustangs had a shaky start with a close I3- IO loss to Sandy Valley. In the second game of the season with Coshocton, CHS led most of the game. But late in the final quarter, Coshocton rallied to go ahead I5-I4. Then the mighty Mus- tangs took the kickoff and drove down the field. A Matt O'Hara field goal capped the down field drive, giving the Mustangs a I7-I5 victory. 68 Q. ' . Their record had dropped to I-3, but they didn't quit. In the very next con- Q an ,hyat- IESI, Claymont topped Lex- ington 20l2. This seemed to give CHS the spark they needed. The next opponent was Tuslaw, which they de- feated 2l-I3. The Lake Blue Streaks gave the Mustangs a tussle, but the Mustangs prevailed I6-IO. East Canton, not supposed to ve a really good team surprised the Mustangs. Late in the game. East Canton rallied and was only down by 2, I4-ll Then the Mustangs drove down the field, putting the icing on the cake to win ll-I2. CHS headed to Minerva and brought home a I4-9 squeaker. The final home game saw CHS take an ear- ly lead over Carrollton. which they never relin- quished. When the dust cleared, the Mustangs had a 27-I3 victory for a 7-3 overall record, the second best in CHS history. I. Another one through the uprights. J. Sandwichedl 3. l'lI take thisl 4. These were the words of Coach Rhonda Funkhouser, referring to the efforts of Claymont's varsity and reserve lady spikers. With a varsity team consisting of seniors Natalie Cot- ton, Teresa Kastor, Becky Hillyer, Pam McDaniel, Melissa Jackson, Debbie Colaner and juniors Leslie Shelley and Lynn Smith, the team compiled an overall record of I9-6. Coach Funkhouser feels that a major part of the Mustang's squad's success this year was due to the return of last year's entire team. One of the most glorious matches of the season was the vic- tory over the state-calibre lVN team. Since the beginnings of volleyball 7 years ago, this is the first time that the lady spikers have defeated IVN, with excellent scores of I5-IO, I6-l8, I5-I. A combina- tion of setter T. This offense, Coach Funkhouser feels, contributed immensely to the success of the lady spikers. Using a fine team effort, the ladies captured second place in the Senate League, and a first ever Sectional cham- pionship, defeating the Ridgewood Generals for the honor. Linksters Capture Senate The golf team ended a lot higher than was expect- ed, stated first year Mentor Rick Cox. With only two returning Iettermen, the young Mustangs turned in an overall record of ll-3, and a fine first place standing in the Senate League. Honors were awarded to seniors Jay Milligan and Randy Butler, who were voted to the Senate League all-star selections. John Kastor sported the best home average at Big Bend with 4.8 over par and Dave Johnson had the best away average with 5 over par. The most successful match of the l98O-8l season was the upset over Senate League for Northwest. The linksters defeated Northwest with the best away score of the season, perhaps the turning point for the linksters. An exciting overtime match with talented Tuslaw saw senior Rob Cromley save his teammates as he birdied the first sudden death hole. The team had averaged scores very close to each other as all of the starters contributed a lou out- standing score at one time or another to help the team. Jay Milligan was medalist in Senate League Tourney, John Kastor was medalist in Burger King Tourney, Tim Mills shot low against Sandy Valley, and Dave Johnson was low scorer at the Tuslaw overtime. Km x Maxwell Places if 3 ln Ohio This season the Claymont wrestlers compiled an 8-5 record, finish- ing second in the Senate League. Coach Mel Peters was pleased with this year's effort, since the team was made up of mostly sopho- mores. Claymont started off on the right track by defeating a tough Akron Tallmadge 39-28. Claymont took Akron Kenmore down to the wire, but was defeated 34-30. Claymont at their next match defeated New Phila quite handily by a 39-I8 count. The Mustangs seemed to start getting their act together when they clobbered Sandy Valley 4620. But injuries plagued the Mustangs in their next match when five starters were out of the lineup. This hurt the Mustangs, as they lost to Coshocton 36-27. But after the loss to Coshocton, Claymont won three straight by defeating Meadowbrook, Dover and Barnesville. Claymont then had 5 key Senate League matches. Claymont lost two straight heart- breakers as they were defeated 34-27 by Minerva and 3l- 28 by Northwest. But the Mustangs didn't give up, as they came back to defeat the next two out of three Senate opponents. They beat Tuslaw 36-24 and Lake 32-2l, but not before losing a heartbreaker to Carrollton 29-23. The Mustangs did well in invitational and tournament play. Clay- mont came in an excellent third in seventeen teams at the Sandy Valley Invitational. They next traveled to the Barnesville tourney and placed fifth out of twelve teams. They then finished third in the All-County Tournament. The post-season tournament action saw Claymont get out to a great start by placing first in the sectionals. The Mustangs dropped a notch and placed second in the districts, sending Brian and Steve Maxwell to the State Tournament in Columbus. Brian, who had a record career win by compiling 83 wins against I7 losses, had the highest place finish in the state tournament in Claymont history by placing third. 585' I. Wrestling team. Row I. D. The girls opened their season with second and third con- tests against Senate powerhouses Lake and East Canton. A close game at Lake ended in a 58-52 victory. Another nip and tuck contest at home against East Canton once again added to the win column, but a much tighter 2 point margin was the only difference in the 5048 victory. Before Christmas, the Ladies had to face fifth- ranked Fairless. Although the game was a de- fensive battle, the Mustangs came out on top to notch their sixth win without a loss. Finishing out the first round of Senate competi- tion, the undefeated Lady Mustangs easily han- dled the rest of hte field and headed into the second round of battle only to have an unble- mished record. The Mustangs secured the sec- ond Senate League crown in a row with a per- fect I4-O league record, as they also moved up to NUMBER ONE in the United Press Interna- tional poll. Tough non-league contests with Co- shocton and Buckeye Trail remained on the slate. A fine defensive performance against the Lady Redskins at home for Parents' Night resulted in a 48-23 win, as the seniors played their final home game and ended a perfect season at home. Single A powerhouse Buckeye Trail stood between the Mustangs and an unblemished re- cord. Now I9-O, Senate League champs, and the num- ber one ranked team in Ohio, Claymont traveled to Old Washington to meet the perenial power- house. A packed crowd greeted the Lady Mus- tangs, the largest crowd ever to see a boys' or girls' game. The Warriors handed the Mustangs their first loss of the season, 53-5l, ending the streak at l9. With tournaments just around the corner, the team was determined to make that loss the last. Claymont received the ifl seed at River View sectionals. Always a tough sectional, it contained the Jil, 4754 CRiver Viewj and ifll CRidgewoodj ranked teams. The Lady Mustangs drew the bye, going opposite River View and would play the Ridgewood-Coshocton winner. The Generals came out on top, and Claymont was set to meet the first of what turned out to be a string of state-ranked tournament oppo- nents, certainly not the easiest way to go. A 54-45 victory over Ridgewood gave the Lady Mustangs their second consecutive sectional crown. Eighth-ranked Toronto was next in line, the semi-final game of the district tournament at John Glenn High School. The Lady Mustangs routed the Red Knights 79-27. Advancing to the district finals for the second year in a row. Claymont met M4 St. Clairsville who sported a I9-3 ledger. The four seniors poured in 65 of 5 wily, N. The Mustangs had won their first ever dis- trict championship, and the right to advance to Regionals at Otterbein. The dream game was finally set up. Clay- mont was playing neighboring rival River View, a matchup they said could be a state final game and result in a state championship. And what a game it wasl In a double overtime with only 3 seconds remaining on the clock, the electrified crowd withessed the shot heard 'round Chio released from Natalie Cotton's hands. The ball hit nothing but net as one second appeared on the scoreboard, along with the final score: Claymont 4ORiver View 39. The Lady Mustangs advanced to the Big House, Ohio State's St. John's Arena. The first opponent met there was Columbus Bish- op Hartley, the owner of two previous state championships. It was a tight ballgame throughout three quarters but the fourth quarter, the Mustangs rallied to a 43-35 victo- ry. The state final game had a bit of local fla- vor as the Lady Mustangs met Canton Cen- tral Catholic for the state crown. After get- ting off to a very sluggish start in the first half, the local girls started to show the real talent that got them there and captured the state championship by defeating Central Catholic 52-45. n fu 3E 65 A .1 A... 4.4!-'ff -.kv 55, 5, 'tar 2 l f-ff ,Q ZH 8 ., 'Q K 44 A J ' .A gxfi if i 4.5 4 1 idii VV '1 Y Z if 'N 1 P5 5-, ,.... J K Roundballers End IO-II The Claymont Mustang basketball team ended with a IO-ll overall record and an 8-6 record in the Senate League. Coach Rick Cox was pleased with this year's season, despite the ll losses. The season got off to a good start as CHS de- feated a tough Akron East team 68-64. The Mus- tangs put it all together by defeating Ridge- wood handily by a score of 7l-52. CHS then traveled to Coshocton only to be beaten in a close 52-5I struggle. Claymont won their first Senate League clash, defeating Tuslaw 7l-53. Salem was the next foe. The Mustangs played hard against this tough team, but came up on the losing end 67-60. The Mustangs now had to face I2 straight Senate League opponents. Beginning on the right foot, CHS defeated East Canton 68-57. But then the Mustangs traveled to Lake and lost a close 66-62 game. The Mus- tangs then put together a string of 4 straight wins. Sandy Valley 67-48, Northwest 69-68 in three overtimes, Carrollton 6049, and Minerva 58-54. The Mustangs were rolling. But as a winning streak begins, so must it end, and the team that stopped Claymont was Tuslaw, 67- 63. CHS then bowed to Lake for the second time of the sea- son 72-7I. This was the fourth loss of 4 points or less for the Mustangs. Claymont then got on the winning track, de- feating East Canton 68-55. lt looked like the G N! , :F I E 3 Y l X K I r' 1-ft' 1 5 '5' Q --us-. .. ' yys g .C '63 u. '. hi '5 AA . Q 5 ,. V . 2 . The band changed to a soft corps marching style and, for the first time, featured the percus- sion section in competition. On July 28, the band met for the first time to prepare for the upcoming season. It started very soon after that for a trip to the Football Hall of Fame Parade in Canton. lt was then down to the field to prepare for the Ohio State Fair. The band returned with a superior rating-finishing in the top three in their di- vision. At Wadsworth Parade and Field Com- petition the band received a second place in parade and in field and received the out- standing field commander award. At Cadiz, the band was disappointed with a third place in parade and a fifth in field. With the Zanesville Competition the next Satur- day, the band's spirit was low. A Spirit Week took place at school to help the band 122 prepare for Saturday. Everything paid off. The band marched off the field at Zanesville with a first place finish and the first Grand Champion trophy in ten years for Claymont. The season ended October 3l with prepara- tions for a spring trip to Disney World in Florida during Easter vacation. How would you like to see my darkroom, little girl? I K, .ff i i l I98l - The year that was. The year of happiness and laughter. the year of tragedy and tears. lt was a year of changes and celebration. But. now it's all behind us and everyth- ing is gone except for the memo- ries. And they'll last forever. I Lance Vickers Carol DeMattio IN MEMORY Through the endless waters, Across the sands of time, We traveled together a journey, A myth of song and rhyme. But the journey hath now ended, You have returned from whence you came, But in memory you shall grow thither, ln each song shall be your name. Each raindrop shall remind me Of the tears which were shed to you this day, Each daisy shall be in honor of you, And a reminder that you passed this way. The sun which shone so brightly, Shall descend from us this day, But the garden in which you sowed your love, Shall never wither away. Though the waters hath divided And the sands of time have ceased to flow, We know that we shall meet again, And be together forever in the light of Heaven's' glow. by Amy Wright On March l, I98l, tragedy struck the Twin City area when Lance Vickers and Carol DeMattio passed away. Shock took its effect on all of us at Claymont, but Lance and Carol began a new life, dwelling in the House of the Lord. Words aren't enough to ex- press the capabilities that Lance possessed. He wasn't an athletic superstar, nor was he an honor student, but Lance could put a smile on the face of anyone he talked to. He was a super- star in bringing happiness not only to school, but any- where he was, be it the park, the pizza shop, or just seeing him walking down the street. Well, Lance, God took you home in a peaceful manner. and it's certain that you're making Heaven one happy place to live. No one knows why things like this happen, nor can anyone change what is the will of God. Life as we know it has ended for Carol, but a new life is just beginning for her. Her life on this earth may not have been long, but the joy she brought to every- one will be remembered by all of us for the rest of our lives. Carol, too, had that rare ca- pability to make people happy. no matter how sad they were. Her smile was infectious. and her laughter was enough to cure anyone of the blues. Thank you, Carol, for mak- ing this world a better place to be and spreading your love for life to everyone.
