A Successful Football Season The Clay Panthers completed a successful football season with five wins and three losses. Clay outscored their opponents one hundred eighty one to ninety-seven. Kent Reed was the leading scorer with thirteen touchdowns and ten extra points, SUMMARY The Panthers opened their season when they faced Van at Bradley Field, September 6. Va.n defeated the Panthers 7-6, in one of the most thrilling games of the season. Kent Reed scored for Clay early in the game. Fayetteville was the next on the list for the Panthers at Bradley Field, September 13. This was a hard fought game from beginning to end, with the Panthers winning out in the end 6-0. Reed scored for Clay early in the first quarter. After that it was a scoreless dual. The following Friday, September 31, Sutton traveled to Clay and played a hard fought game that ended in a forfeit to the Panthens, when Sutton removed its team from the field. Score 1-0. On October 8 the Panthers traveled to Clendenin and were defeated 25-13. Clendenin scored early in the game. but Clay tied it up and then took the lead 7-6 at the end of the first quarter.- Tuffy Jones scored Clay's first touchdown on a seventy five yard run. Kent Reed scored the other goal. The Panthers soundly thumped Woody Wo1f's Red Terrors 26-0 in the next game. Pete Sizemore scored two touchdowns to lead Clay. Tuffy Jones and Kent Reed each carrled the ball over once. -or-seq Burnsville then came to Bradley Field Friday, October 22, to take a licking from the Panthers 59-13, Cecil West 2, James Dawson 1, Pete Sizemore 1, Gene Gregorich 1, Maurice Williams 1, Buren Jones 1, Reed 2. On October 29 the Panthers traveled to Elkview to gain a 38-0 victory. Elkview was no match for the Panthers in this rugged game, Reed 2, Jones 2, Gregorich 1, Igo 1. In the homecoming game November 5, the Gassaway Elks trounced the Panthers 39-20. During the half-time intermission, Jo Ann Summers was crowned Queen of '48. Reed 3.
