'as un, I963 1 -A -n ,F C23 Foreword We travel many roadsg the smooth, the bumpy, the long, the scenic. The suc- cesses of our lives depend upon which road we choose to travel. We at Clay High, throughclasses, activities, clubs and athletics, have strived to follow the best road with the help of our guiding signs, the faculty and administration. As we travel the road of life, we must be guided by signs lest we make a wrong turn. Sometimes the signs are hard to see or followg but if they are followed, we will find the road a smooth one. Through the pages of this yearbook we have tried to show the various paths taken by Clay studentsg paths that lead to the choice of the road we will take for the future. 1 iii, x , ikiiifk 11,1 1 W, 1 1111 1 39.2111 gm. . fy, X , 1 11 11 1 1 , 1 11 11 51 11 M- 1 11 11 J, . As graduation approaches, each senior must decide whether he will further his education or find a place in the world of business. Graduation Class of I963 CLASS MOTTO - Wisdom is the Key to Achievement CLASS FLOWER - Red Rose CLASS COLORS - Blue and Silver Date of Graduation - May 21, 1963 I6 DERCLASSME rl R out H ROA D Because the work of an underclassman reaches into new areas, the roads they travel are rough. Just as the bumps and ruts in the highways make us more appreciative of the smoother roads ahead, the hardships we encounter in our high school career will enable us to be better prepared to meet the pro- blems that we shall have to face in our future lives. Leaving to decorate for the Junior-Senior Prom are the class officers. They are, from left to right: Sue Carroll, Secretary: Jerry Howard, Presidentg John Oliver, Treasurerg and Rick Arbogast, Vice President. Juniors As the Junior Class of 1963, we have worked diligently to make this year successful. The Juniors have taken an active part in many school organizations such as: band, chorus, debate, Future Teachers of America, Science Club, Panther Staff, and Library Staff. Jim Wallace won first prize in the Science Fair this year. A major portion of the year was devoted to basketball, and six Junior boys were Varsity players. During the baseball season, the Juniors also take a part. Academically, the Juniors rate high, for we have an average of twelve students on the Honor Roll. Eight Juniors are National Honor Society probationary members, and still others have taken honors on the Scholarship Teams. Our class has been represented well in community projects, for several of our girls are Candy Stripers and volunteers at the local hospitals. As Juniors, we have spent this year building a record of which we can be proud. On the average thirteen students have placed on the honor roll each six weeks period. During the year we have had an outstanding record in our participation in clubs and other school activities Four of the starting five on the reserves in basketball and one on the varsity team are from our class. We cannot guide ourselves through the back roads and free ways of life, We must use the guidance of our counselors and administrators to find our way to success. County Superintendent E, R. McCowen received his B.S. Degree in Education from Ohio University, the Master's Degree from Northwestern University, and he has attended both Otterbein College and Harvard Univer- sity, Mr. McCowen said in a statement to us: The rural schools of Scioto County in meet- ing the demands of our great democratic society has been meeting the demands of both quantity and quality, Never before have so many boys and girls been educated in our rural schools, and their achievements have come about through a desire to con- stantly improve, We must keep providing for individual differences and determine which learning experiences are the most significant for his success, We must be determined to con- stantly serve our purpose toward the progress of our society, Our challenge for the future, as in the past, is to see to it that each stu- dent enjoys equal opportunities for fulfilling their educational needs as individuals in the democratic society which is America, E, R, MCCOWEN The Board Members, seated left to right, are: Chester Chapman, Ron Horsley, Mrs Alfred Miller, Robert Allen, Charles Vanderpool, Glenn Moritz, and Mr, Bandy, Executive Head If 'lf TN' ' mia Tec. We are living in an age today that provides the greatest challenge and opportunity for youth that there has ever been in the history of civi- lization, At no time in history has there been so much concern about the health, welfare, and education of our youth. Many new methods ofteaching are being in- troduced such as: Team teaching, Programmed learning, T.V. , etc. Many new devices are being invented to improve or revise methods of teaching such as: Teaching Machines, Reading Machines, etc. But the most important ofall these devices and new methods is the increased interest created in the parents in community, county, state, and Federal governments. The results ofall the above are working for the bene- fit of our youth today and creating the greatest opportunities for youth that this country has ever known, CARL D, BANDY Executive Head Mayltake this occasionto thankthe students and teachers ofClay High School for their loyal support and cooperation throughout this school year, To the graduation class of 1963, may I wish you the best of luck and may memories of your school and community always be cherished. I would also like to extend my thanks and appreciation to the wonderful people of our community for their fine support in producing and expanding our educational facilities .
