A Wintery night, Christmas trees, fancy dresses and the beautiful strains of the Keynotes ushered in the holiday season for all Clayites at the second annual Christmas Dance. Candle- chandeliers, murals, holiday greens, and decor- ated Christmas trees adorned the Clay gym, and put all in a festive and romantic holiday mood. The arrival of Santa Claus gave all the girls a chance to tell Santa their very special Christ- mas wish. At the hour of eleven o'clock dreamy Clayites left the dance humming the strains of WHITE CHRISTMAS, filled with the Christ- mas spirit and ready to begin their holiday sea- son. Among the couples enjoying the gay atmosphere are Mark Johnston and Liese Davis, and Sue Holloway and Al Jones. Santa appears to highlight the evening. Do you remember the French classes singing Frere Jacques? or the strains of Adeste Fid- elis coming from the Latin room? Maybe one of your classes took a trip to court or visited a state hospital. Long hours after school, preparations for meetings, trips, and of course, inter- esting and worthwhile meetings, typlified the many activities of F the clubs at Clay. Under the di- rection of the newly organized Inter-Club Council the 1961-62 school year reached a new height in club organization. Several new clubs such as the Foreign Language and History Clubs took their places on the roster of the many clubs at Clay. The reorganization of the Hi-Y Club and Mono- gram Club gave the boys a chance to become more active in school affairs and to participate in athletics at the same time. The Student Council gave all students a chance to have their say in the functions of the school. All the clubs presented fun and enjoyment for all students, but only a small per- centage of the student body were eligible for the club which presents both a reward for achievement and a new beginning---National Honor Society. Now let's take a glance through the many activities and fun we have had in the year gone by, as we peek through at '62 . . . in Clubs. X 1 -39- Annual Staff reaches new heights After making their first deadline, the annual staff er, Jill Arnold, Kathy Keresztes, Janet Lederer, decided they could do anything--and they did!!! and Susie Claycomb. From left to right are Dick Johnson, Sandy Toop- Writing copy, taking pictures and making the best yearbook possible kept the eleven members of the Minuteman staff working hard and diligently from September to April. Under the direction of editor Jill Arnold and sponsor Mr. Garrett, the staff worked togeth- er to learn the different methods and techni- ques needed to put out a yearbook. To make your yearbook even better, Sue Claycomb and Jill Arnold spent two weeks at Indiana Uni- versity gathering new ideas. Got a problem girls? Busy working Colonial Staff members Sue Holloway, Alfred Nuc- ci, Carol Wigent, Jane Tusing, Marianne Nucci, Larry Redman, John Karlson, Barb Papp, and Sandy Stuart ready our bi-weekly paper. The Colonial, our school paper, this year joined forces with the Min- uteman to form both publications in- to one group. Throughout the year the staff worked under the direction of editor Sandy Stuart and sponsor Mr. Garrett, to bring the student body facts of the latest functions, sports, and school achievements. Faces wore smiles, brains were exhausted from work, fingers had callouses from typ- ing, but by combining work and fun Clay's Colonial staff put out another volume of the day by day activities for all students to treasure always. With only one fu'st str'inger returning, Coach King had to make a hard decision to determine the remaining ten players. Several positions were still a toss-up just before the first game. The out- look for the season was very dim, but team talent and hard work produced one of the fastest and one of the most high spirited teams at Clay. Sev- eral inexperienced underclassmen found them- selves on the starting eleven. The first game was against our annual rival, New Carlisle, last year's Northern State Conference champions. Although the statistics were close, Clay lost 13-0. After rol- ling over Knox, 18-135 North Judson, 47-0, and Jimtown, 39-205 the Colonials were assured of a second place finish in the Northern State Con- ference. In non-conference games Clay was de- feated by Penn, 13-0, St. Joseph, 33-14, Niles, 20-65 and gained victories over Rolling Prairie, 39-13, and Nappanee, 19-12. -63- Mike Montgomery races around North Judson's right end to- A stout Colonial defense stops another intruder, as two de ward the goal line. Coach Dimich alternated the starting line up at every game in order to find the com- bination that would click and put Clay back on the road to victory. This means that every time an opponent scored a run three Colo- nials had crossed home plate. Rog Benko's pitch- ing record stood at 7-1. Troy S1oderbeck's at 6-1, Mike Dunkelberger's at 1-0, and Terry Dokey's at 0-1. Rog received the trophy for most valuable conference pitcher, Bill Flanagan for reaching first base safely the most times and Tom Seiffer- lein, the conference batting trophy for a .533 av- erage. Larry Redman, team manager, records another run for the Colonials. Peeking Through of Friends From the Office of the Principal: We, hereby, dedicate this book to our seniors. Th-ey have lived among us for twelve years. They have worked. Some have worked hard and long. Some have found easier paths. Each has achieved in his or her own way. With what ever each has achieved, he or she will go forth. As we have known them, so, too, may the world know them. Some, however, may do more and better hereafter. Some may do less. i We honor our seniors by this dedication of this book. We do so with affection. Seniors: May these pages ever reward you for what you have done. May they ever inspire you to do more. 329' 'Qing fi ' gf w 1. ,ww Lee Ann Graves, Valedictorian, whips a tasty snack. Cooking is a favorite hobby of Lee Ann's.
