Coaches Dick Baumgartncr, Ted Federici, Bill I-Iughes, and Ray Walenszak pause for a breather before practice. Second Pllzce Exhilaration exists in the physical world. Not all lessons are learned in the classroom, nor are all answers found in books or in test tubes. For participants and spectators alike varsity sports hold a special magic. Varsity football has long been an important sport at Clay High School. This year the team maintained an overall record of four wins, four losses, and two ties. They placed second in the Great Lakes League standings. The season open- ed as the Eagles repaid Lima Shawnee for the defeat they were handed last year. The stiffest competition was undefeated Whitmer, a team the Eagles battled to a 6-6 tie. Spirit was high as the annual Clay vs. Cardinal Stritch game ap- proached. The Eagles maintained their drive and spirit even though the Cardinals won. No- vember 3, the night of the Clay vs. Waite game, was Coach Federici.l3ay. The squad, in trying to honor their coach with a victory, battled Waite to 21 scoreless finish- the field after he injured his ankle. The team was honored when nine players were elected to the mythical All-G.L.L. dream team. Three other players received Honorable Men- tion. Coach Federici and Ron Klawitter help Rich Rothbard off
