THE TIGER History of C. H. S. When Clatskanie consisted of two houses and a barn, and settlers- rode horseback or went by boat to Portland for supplies, the school district extended to what is now Rainier. Instruction consisted of the old favorites, readin', 'ritin', and 'rithmeticf' but they were ably taught. About ten years later, a little two-room building stood upon the spot now occupied by' our present school. The little cabin grew with the number of pupils who attended it until there were eight grades occupying what is now the primary rooms and our history, science, and commercial rooms. Two years later, high school entered Clatskanie, and C. H. S. came into existence in the seventh and eighth grade building. This, too, became overcrowded, so in 1920 the present struc- ture was built, and six new teachers added to the faculty. As the region became more settled, the pioneers realized the growing need of a school, but there were too few people and not enough money to build a schoolhouse and hire a teacher, so E. mW. Conyers, one of the first people to come here after this section was opened, met the emergency call by turning the second floor of his home into a school room and himself acting as instructor. Pupils were brought on horseback from as far as twenty-five miles. Now after eight years- this is overcrowded, and soon C. H.
