It last class, or class, to have Day exercises ings. When we in September, friends, to our final meeting may be that we shall be the at least the next to the last the privilege of holding Class in these sumptuous surround- entered Classical High School 1962, we knew only our old junior high classmates, and it was with them that we fretted over the prospect of three- year stay. It did not take us many weeks to make new acquaintances, and We rapidly became active members of the student body. As we came to know Classical, we grew proud of her and tried, in and out of school, to act as true Classicalites. As students here we have worked hard, but, along with the work, we have had many enjoyable experi- ences that will provide pleasant memories for years to come. As we look forward to college, to the armed services, to jobs, we are conscious that we owe our parents, who have inspired us, and our teachers, who have instructed us, our deepest gratitude. They will share with us whatever our ultimate success in life. Let us now look back at the highlights of the Class of 1965. Charles Andreson PAULA BERGIN Like Caesar's Gaul our stay on Irving Street has been divided into three parts - our sophomore, junior and senior years. Each one of these years brings back special, nostalgic memories of its own. When we first entered Classical in 1962, none of us knew very much about the substitue cafeteria at Lano's, bus tickets were only ninety cents, and the Our Father was still constitutional, Some of us expected to find hour glasses in the classrooms instead of electric clocks, but condi- tions were not nearly so bad as rumor had them, CLASS HISTORY Because we were lowly sophomores, we felt restricted to informal extra- curricular activities which included climbing the stairs to our third-floor homerooms and jaywalking on the way to the Yet not all of us re- mained in obscurity. Carol Dorfman became a celebrity when somebody started a fire with her gym suit, and we were forced to make our first great exodus into the rain. Like loyal Classicalites we attended the Senior Variety Show in March. At The Gift of Music we experi- enced a most unforgetable evening of spontaneous humor. Later in the year, Marilyn Swartz and Eric Yoffie made their dramatic debuts in the Senior Play, You Can't Take It With You. In june our class was well-represented on the honor roll. Paul Arsenault, Cynthia Asher, Anne Beard, Paula Bergin, Peter Bilizarian, Stan Greenberg, Larry Kegeles, Tom- my Mattimore, Jerry Morse, Liz Oginsky, Hank Payne, joel Rosen, and Eric Yoffie all received four A's. As the end of the school year ap- proached we steadily increased our knowledge of Tiger traditions, but we were not deemed worthy of becoming juniors until we had survived the senior rehearsals of Salitube.'i We were sustained during this week-long ordeal solely by the thought of hav- ing the entire summer to recuperate. When we returned to school in September, we were eager to move down to our second-floor homerooms. I3 Once we settled back into our scholas- tic routine, we voted for junior class officers. Charlie Andreson was elect- ed president, Cynthia Bergstedt, vice- presidentg Marylee Houle, secretaryg and Mike Backer, treasurer, With the publication of the Argus in Octo- ber Paula Bergin, Midge Chervin, Jerry Morse, Chris Nigro, Hank Payne, Joel Rosen, and Sylvia Thamel became regular members of the Liter- ary Board. Charlie Andreson and Greg Mahan were key players on our predominately senior football team which won the Class A Champion- ship. As juniors we had a preliminary encounter with the College Boards- Parts of the verbal section in the essay tease were so easy to under- stand that they might as well have been written in hieroglyphics, but some of us were unable to resist filling in all the boxes on our answer sheets. If our scores had only re- sembled our blood pressures, our worries would have been at an end. In March we forgot about the im- portance of getting 700's long enough to enjoy ourselves at the Senior Variety Show, Moments to Remember. Ringo Starr should have been there to see Alan Sherr and his shaggy-haired group swing into action. C1 When the Service Club Essays were judged, Noah Mandell was awarded second prize in the city- wide competition. Our cheerleaders also placed second in the annual con- test at David Prouty High School in Spencer. Classmates of ours who were on the team included Sally Bates, Cynthia Bergstedt, Karen Freedman, and Gale Thurston. In May the junior Prom was held at the Hillcrest Country Club. As the Queen, Carol McLaughlin had a de- lightful evening reigning over our Enchanted Isle. Cynthia Bergstedt, Joyce Bloomfield, Paula Miskinis, Carol Seega, Gale Thusrton, and Carolyn Wolk were members of the royal court. Thanks to the efforts of Mike Miller and Neil O'Leary we had an unusually successful season in tennis as we placed third in New England. While the boys were busy with their rackets, Liz Oginsky and Ricky Sandler were rehearsing their parts for the upcoming Senior Play, Our Hearts Were Young and Gayf' At the graduation exercises in June, Tommy Mattimore received the Har- vard Book Prize, Paula Bergin, the Aletheia Prizeg and Hank Payne, the john D. McKinley Book Prize. The summer months passed quick- ly, and we began our final year at 222 485 by voting for a new slate of class officers. Charlie Andreson was elected president, Gale Thurston, vice- C LASS HISTORY lConfinuedl president, Linda Davidson, secretary, and Mike Backer, treasurer. Shortly afterwards, we learned that Ijarry Kegeles, Tommy Mattimore, and Joel Rosen had been named Semi-Finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program. jimmy Barron, Cynthia Drougen, Stan Greenberg, Larry Joseph, Noah Mandell, Peter Os- trow, Hank Payne, Alan Sherr, Lu- cien Teig, and Eric Yoffie all re- ceived letters of Commendation. Our football players were led onto the gridiron by Charlie Andreson and Greg Mahan, the only starters who were returning from our Worcester County Championship Team of 1963. Although we had a rather dismal season, both the boys received All- City Awards for their outstanding per- formances. Before we knew it, we were back donating more money to the College Board people. If the funds in Princeton, New Jersey failed to sur- pass those at Fort Knox, it was through no fault of ours. While we were getting ready to take the achievement tests, we were also busy filling out college applications. Once we mailed the completed forms, most of us were free to worry until we received the final decisions in April. November was unofficially declar- ed tiger evacuation month, as the firemen came to visit us serveral mornings in a row, Whenever a bell rang, we began to wonder whether it was just another bomb scare or whether it was something really unusual like the beginning of first period. In December a resolution to preserve the name of Classical was defeated by a School Committee vote of 5-2, and the Mayor left Noah Mandell somewhat disillusioned. Larry Kegeles was selected as a cla- rinet player for the 1965 All-Eastern Orchestra. A turn-away crowd supported the Senior Hop in February, and the dance was a stunning success partly because our Anti-Poverty Bill had a no refund clause. Under the able direction of Ricky Sandler and the executive committee, the Senior Vari- ety Show was presented at Burncoat Junior High. Many Happy Returns was quite an eventful celebration of Classical's 120th birthday. For a change of pace Twelve Angry Menu was chosen as the Sen- ior Play. The dramatis personae was lengthened to include a few fe- males, and as usual Bobo purchased a patron's ticket. Ricky Sandler, Mari- lyn Swartz, and Eric Yoffie had lead- ing roles in the production. With the passing of this week's activities our stay at Classical draws to a close. The Senior Prom and Graduation will be added to our memories of three wonderful years, and we shall all look forward to playing Who's Whom at our 25th reunion. CLASS WILL-1965 LAWRENCE JOSEPH We, the Class of 1965 of Classical High School, of the City and County of Worcester and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, being in sound health of body, mostly from hiking up and down Salitube's awesome and ancient stairs, and our minds as brilliant as always, and mindful of the uncertainty of graduation, and intending to dispose of all our property of whatsoever kind and nature upon our scheduled departure, do hereby make, publish, and declare this to be our Last Will and Testament, hereby revoking, of course, all former wills or codicils by us at any time made, of which there have been many. The Class of 1965 bequeathes the follow- ing conglomeration of itemized bequests in the form of poor puns, meretriciously syn- thetic metaphors, unmistakably free verse, and obviously forced rhyme: To our Faculty, amidst a shower of tears, We leave, besides the same thanks and ap- preciation Bequeathed by classes for one hundred twenty years, The services of a merchant of photographa- tion To take new pictures of them for Clamif Myths of future years. I To the Faculty also, we leave the junior Class, And to the junior Class, the Faculty, wishing Lots of luck to both. They will surely need it. To Mr. Charbonneau, noble teacher of French, A photo of France's favorite pin-up: Charles DeGaulle, Plus a written guarantee that he is not A famous seventeenth century French author, Who, at age fifty-one, was destined to fall. To-Miss Shaughnessy, mentor of Room Four, We leave a pair of tickets to her favorite movie-Lam' farm, Not to mention auotgraphs of the vaudeville Team of Guidencrantz and gentle Rosen- stern. Or is it Rosencrantz and gentle Guilden- stern? To Mr. Weed, magnanimous teacher of Bi- ology, Eye of newt, and toe of frog, Wool of bat, and tongue of dog, Adder's fork, and blindworm's sting, Lizard's leg, and howlet's wing. Linda Davidson leaves her memories Of happy days at Chandler junior High, And Room Two leaves to Mr. Brooks A clock which always reads 8:05. To Mr. Koki we leave an of course, or three or six. I5 CLASS Jerry Morse bequeathes his giant sweater collection To an unknown teacher in Room Five. To Mr. Foley we leave one and a half- Of everything, And to Mrs. Greene, we leave to memorize The following verses before her eyes: By the rude launching pad, chewing her cud, Her tail to April's breeze unfurled, A cow in an Atlas missile stood, To become the first herd shot 'round the world. To Mr. jack Bent, we leave the cow. Gale Thurston, gracious Class V.P., Loyal supporter of the G.O.P.! Bequeathes to Mr. Yoffe threescore buttons Bearing the name and picture of Barry Goldwater, May he rest in peace. A genuine, used only once, plaster-of-Paris leg cast Is left by Sylvia Thamel, the courageous girl with the crutch! And Paula Kotseas, girl without a crutch, Sadly leaves her most valued possession, her prized hairbrush. Michael Backer, Senior Class Treasurer, Leaves with more money than when he came, And Noah, dauntless Noah leaves in mourn- ing Upon the death of Classical's sacred and holy name. WI lContinuedl Paula Bergin and Joel Rosen, Argui editors, Leave an infinite net of rationality, Wlmatever that is. And Charlie Andreson leaves his captain- and presidencies to the Class of '66. Thus we, the Class of 1965, do hereby sign seal, publish, and declare the foregoing in- strument as and for our Last Will and Testament, in our presence and in the pres- ence of each of us, and in the presence of witnesses, in their presence and in the pres- ence of each of them, and as Shakespeare always said, Exeunt omnes, or, We all have to go sometime. Lawrence joseph, Testator The following great humanitarians were given positions as witnesses, because they all have, in one way or another, joined the ranks of the unemployed during the past year: Dean Burch Charles fSonnyj Liston Nguyen Khanh Nikita Khrushchev CLASS ORATION JAMES LAUR113 AN AGE OF IRONY How much, I wonder, in three years at Classical High School have you learned about the Drupe Fruits . . . I mean in par- ticular the PEACH? I am referring to Pruus Persica, both clingstone and freestone. If you were to engage in picking peaches you might come across that variety . . . big, fat, round, ripe, and fleshy. But upon probing beneath the fuzzy yellow covering, as chance would have it, you might find that this particular drupe had been dropped, leaving its innards badly bruised and blackened, yet you would swear you had picked a real El- berta, a real peach! IRONIC ISN'T IT? The best-looking fruit is not necessarily the best. All is not as it appears. There is, too, a grim irony about the decade of the twentieth century, about this age in which we live. The age is surely one of amazing advancement, yet despite our pro- gress and the outward appearance of pros- perity within the corporate life of America, the inner life of our human family is bruised by a blackening moral and spiritual decay. Certainly our technilogical advancement is startling. NW e look toward new horizons of scientific progress in our attempts to control the heavens yet, at the same time, we falter in our efforts to hold firm the reins of things terrestrial. We toss a 200 million dollar tin can and a few cameras at the moon and the thrilling venture prospers us all. Economic- ally no people has ever known such prosper- ity. Yet, we remain dissatisfied, ill at ease, lacking in confidence, spiritually chilled and hungry. We live in what John Kenneth Galbraith calls the Affluent Society and still remain unsatisfied. Clearly he who said that Man does not live by bread alone was never more correct. Our great task of the future is to synchro- nize our ever-increasing material growth with a moral and spiritual code similarly well advanced. It is not difficult to see our so- ciety, greatly lagging in moral and spiritual effort. We are given evidence: noxious growth of juvenile delinquency, student violence on and off campus, racial strife both North and South, callous indifference to crime as too many find themselves cow- ardly passive witnesses to corruption and even murder, apathy and corruption rampant in public office, and the softness of our generation content to seek no more in life than what is euphemistically called leisure. We are too often reminded that we over- play, over-drink, over-eat, that we are over- entertained, over-sexed and under-exercised. Our new password for life is non-involve- ment. We are content to live in a world of fantasy and cringe at the thought of becom- ing personally involved with anything. Like the bruised peach we seem just to be too thin skinned and much too fat, over ripe and juicy. C LASS O RATIO N lC0nfinuedl More than any other age, our society can be characterized by confusion, uncertainty, and apprehension. We must fill the spiritual void in America today. We must place our concerted effort here. The health of our culture depends on us. It is not as if we did not have a clear vision of our desired ends. We have a goal to reach and a national pur- pose. XVe want an end to hunger, an end to race discrimination, an end to crime and social maladjustment, an end to disease and human suffering, an end to ignorance, pre- judice, and meanness of spirit, an end to fear. We must recapture our faith and our moral strength. We want to maintain our heritage of a vital, virile, and active nation. Stated positively, we do have a goal devoutly desired. It is peace in freedom. Certainly absence of purpose is not our dilemma, but rather our problem is the frustration resulting from the failure of the means. complex that it is not easy for the individual to see what he can do about them. The tasks facing the frontiersman two centuries ago may have been grim, but they were obvious. Each man as an individual knew what he must do. But what can a man of today do about the far-reaching problems facing our society? Much faith can be placed in the indomitable will and courage of the human spirit through which man is capable of find- ing his way out of strange and alien dark- ness. But, the answers are never self-evident and solutions come only as the result of tedi- ous effort. As Class Orator I would not be so naive as to suggest that you, the Class of 1965, will in these matters solely shape America's destiny. No, not even I would claim that you will be supermen. But it is vital that you and I and all Americans realize that our nation's future will not be determin- ed by our immense physical and material Our national problems in this century have with the passage of time become so Cynthia Asher Paul Arsenault Ann Beard Paula Bergin Peter Bilazarian John Costello power, but by the spiritual and moral health of each one of us. It is within our power to determine this health through our individual commitment to peace in freedom.
