Three short years ago all of us, with much bewilderment and mixed emotions, met, many of us for the first time. But three years of study, of fun, and of companionship have Welded us together. We are now a part of Classical, and, through the coming years, its spirit will live in us. We should not have attained our goals, had it not been for the wise counsel, the patience, and the encourage- ment of our parents and of the faculty. To them we shall be forever grateful. After leaving our alma mater, We shall be called upon to do tasks that have been done before, but we shall be expected to do them better. More will be asked of us. We shall be calledupon to do the things that still need to be done and to do them Well. The world expects great deeds and noble deeds. Some of us may produce them. There is another kind of nobleness, however, that most of us must contribute, that is the best in us as students in college, as Workers, as parents, as citizens. We shall not disappoint those who have made today possible for us, we shall bring credit upon Classical. Once again, we bid you welcome to the last meeting of the Class of 1962. CLASS HISTORY DONNA H. ZABARSKY We, the Class of 1962, first entered this noble building in September 1959- The eventful day began with the corraling of all the timid refugees from junior high in Classi- cal's spacious auditorium. We were then as- signed to homerooms and began immediately the long climb to educational stature. Soon the bell rang and we had to leave the safe confines of our homerooms and stumble through the corridors lined with superior up- per classmen. By the end of the first week, however, we were fully initiated. We had learned the art of balancing stacks of books and inventing alibis. We had tested or rather experienced the fine cuisine of our cafeteria. We Sopho- mores soon realized that, although possessing many modern conveniences such as electri- city and running water when it rained, Class- ical did not have an elevator. As Sophomores we did not exactly set the world on fire, but in our own eyes we were a rather superior lot. Judith Heald, Rita Weiss, Geraldine Swartz, Miriam Grace, Marian Karpen, and Janice Gould made the Argus Business Board. Ruth Moses arrived from Israel. By the first marking period, there was no doubt of the scholastic ability of our class, at least in our teachers' minds. In sports the Classical Tigers finished our first year in fine tyle. The tennis and golf teams won Interhigh Championships, as did the baseball team. The Seniors said their good-byes and we moved up a rung, and came down to the second floor. The coming of summer proved a very wel- come relief to our weary minds. In September 1960, we returned as juniors, minus Marian Karpen, who had moved to California. We found awaiting us much study, whirling social activities, a clever Variety Show, and the Senior Hop for a few lucky juniors and even some Sophomores. David Edstrom was elected class president, Anne Niemitz, vice-president, joan Szynkie- wicz, secretary, and Mike Sherman was made custodian of the money bags. We were all proud of the literary talents of Eugenia Allmon, Mary Savage, Miriam Grace, Shelley Meltzer, Lauren Coblenz, and the lone male representative, Barry Aframe, who won certificates in the National Poetry and Essay Contest. Suzy Lainer won the Miss Capezio contest, sponsored by a local depart- ment store, and enjoyed a weekend in New York as part of her prize. Sharkey Garsys made the All-City Basketball team, much to the pleasure of a certain blond. The Cheer- leaders, or as Mr. Weed fondly calls them, the Ya-Ya Girls, increased their volume with six lively juniors: Christine Poshkus, Judy Steiman, Barbara Yummy Burns, Anne Niemitz, Sally MacGillivray, and janet Guer- tin. On January 21, the school was saddened by the sudden death of Mr. McKinley, our much beloved Latin teacher. C LASS H I STO RY lCominuedl In May came the College Boards, usually referred to as the beginning of the end. Our shattered minds were quickly enlivened by the Junior Prom, called Mystical Gardens, at the Italian-American Club. Carolann Austin was chosen Queen of the Prom. June saw the retirement of Miss Phillips, Miss Walsh, and Mr. Johnstone. June also brought the fun of summer, visits to colleges, and the gathering of college applications. After a summer which seemed altogether too short, we returned to school and Marian came all the way from California to be in at the finish. Now we were truly Sophisticated Seniors. The long-awaited day had finally arrived. The glory of seniorhood rested grace- fully upon our shoulders. Where were the awkward, ill-at-ease youngsters of two years before? Now Mike Sherman had all the suavity of the politician. Liz Cotton's hairdo rose a foot, with Anne Stearns coiffure com- ing in for second place. Judy Heald took a greater interest in sports. Katey FitzGerald brought a bit of Vogue to Classical. This year has been the most memorable of our years at Classical. It will be the remem- ber when year. By the way, did the zoo- keeper know that Steve Porter was out at the Classical versus South game in Novem- ber? Senior Class Officers were elected early. Sharkey Master-of-all Sports Garsys was chosen president, Judy Let's take a dip Nielsen, vice-president, David Elected againi' Edstrom, treasurer, and Christine the Ya-Ya Girl herself Poshkus, as secretary. Neither wind, nor rain, nor snow could keep old Classical's Tiger from doing the twist. The off again, on again Senior Hop finally took place at the Yellow Barn, in Feb- ruary. For a week after, oh, did those bones ache! College Board time rolled around again, this time we were playing for keeps. We began to besiege colleges with applications - ten dollars - twenty dollars - thirty or more - to be in good hands - we hope. During the football season, the one-eyed bedraggled looking Tiger became surprising- ly healthy. We do not know whether Mr. Ryder gave him vitamins or he was just tired of looking like an alley cat. He certainly did grow powerfully strong and the boys he played with, Donald Rana, James Donahue, Sharky Garsys, Tony Arnieri, nd Dick Stid- sen, made the All-City Football Squard. Scholastically, three years of hard work bore fruit when Marian Karpen, Rebecca Nally, Stuart Madnick, and Howard Mason were honored by being named graduation speakers. The Variety Show, Irving Street Revue, was held March 23, at Burncoat Street Junior High School. The Carmalettes got a little soggy with the milk Magician Rosen forgot to make disappear. Was that chewing gum you used, Sharky, to put that accordion to- gether? The Girls' Field Hockey team real- ized that if you do not succeed at first, try try again. Once upon a time there was a poor conductor, was not that the way the story went, Woody? Paul Pappas put the other players to shame, he was a natural in a grass skirt. On May 11, the Thespians of Classical stepped forward to present The Night of January 16th. Barry Aframe, Donna Zabar- sky, Mel Applebaum, Carol Parkman, Joel Remmer, and Phil Haddad were, of course, the stars of the show. What Hollywood has missed! We close the history of the Class of 1962 with hearts filled with conflicting emotions. Tonight will come the Prom and on Wednes- day will come Graduation. We regret leaving Mr. Couming and our beloved teachers, we shall miss the fun and light-heartedness of high school life, yet the future beckons to us with a touch of adventure and an alluring promise: we shall be freshmen in the fall. CLASS WILL -1962 PETER CIPRO When, in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for a group to dissolve the bonds which have, for three years, united them to one another, it is only just and fitting that they assess their wealth and make proper disposition of it. We find that there is much that we can take with us: a solid preparation for further education, hab- its of study, a loyalty to our classmates and to Classical. To Mr. Couming, Mr. Breen, the teach- ers of Classical High, we accordingly offer a lifetime gratitude. Of our lesser possessions we do give and bequeath: To Mr. Butler, we leave a year's sub- scription to Sad Sack. To Mrs. Stead, we leave new window shades and an air conditioner. To Mr. Marden, we leave a ripple tank. To Mr. Weed, we leave our promise to watch Boom Town everytime he and his frogs are on. To Coaches Brennan and Ryder, we leave our thanks for leading the basketball and football teams on to victory and for bringing back to Classical the athletic. honors which were once hers. As a token of our appreciation we leave each a bronze statue of Sharky Garsys To the Student Council we bequeathe a penny to start the collection for a new T.V. To the juniors, we leave this answer to President Kennedy's physical fitness program, a twist on each date keeps the body in shape. To the juniors, we leave the Friday fish smell. Some individuals have particular trea- sures to dispose of: To Mr. Foley, Bob Lirange leaves his calculus book for which he fought so hard. To Mr. Erickson, Stu Madnick leaves a few moments of peace and quiet. To Mr. Powers, Salli Roy leaves snap- shots of her original hairdos. Diane Miller leaves sobbing, I'm in- nocent, Miss Kennedy. Judy Steiman and Judy Heald leave the coaching of the basketball team to Mr. Bren- nan. Martha Romanoff leaves Mrs. Free- lander a box of saltines, and Paul Mitchell leaves Martha Romanoff a box of noodles. CLASS WILL ccommuedu Wayne Arny and Andy Kudarauskus leave their own class gift, a new window pane for Miss Gilbert. Woody Small leaves talking. Rita Weis leaves several copies of her book, How to Chew Gum and Get Away with It, with an introduction by Mr. Kaplan. Buttons leaves Bows. Zivile Pauliukonis leaves for the Indian- apolis 500. Mike Piuze leaves behind three years of hard work. Jane Bedrick and Janice Ritz leave their pony tails to Faith Rubin. jim Donohue leaves his lips to the Revlon company. Nick Rizos leaves three inches taller than when he came. To Denny Holbrook, the Cheerleaders leave their stripes. Christine Poshkus leaves her T shirt to some deserving cheerleader. Mike Sherman leaves his chewed up shirt collars. Jim Doyle leaves his cough to Christina Callahan. john Lenart and Nick Leacu leave the honor which they shared jointly, Fish of the Year. Genie Allmon and Elaine Anderson leave their dreams behind in Room 7. jeffrey Gilbert leaves for the jungle, he seems to enjoy working with savages. XVe leave Jim Rinos and Paul D'ambra sleeping. Here unto I set my hand and my seal on this eighteenth day of june, in the year of our Lord one thousand nine hundred and sixty-two and of the graduating classes of Classical High School, the one hundred and seventeenth. Peter S. Cipro, Jr. Testator Witnesses: Boris Badinoff and Natasha Fatale CLASS ORATION BARRY AFRAME Ave Atque Vale Classical High, like old London Bridge, is falling down, falling down, falling down. Plaster falls from the walls, rain drips through the ceiling, the windows rattle like gattling guns with each gust of wind, the top floor has been condemned - on nu- merous occasions, and the basement cafe- teria closely resembles a five o'clock subway: dim, musty, and crowded. In a few short- or more probably a few long - years Wor- cester will erect a new high school with a gymnasium for its championship basketball teams, soundproof language laboratories where afternoon French Classes will not have to compete with brass band rehearsals, and an auditorium that will hold both halves of the student body at one time. Yet, even with all of these modern conveniences against all our archaic impediments, I hold no envy for the future graduates of the Newton Hill High School. In fact, I am rather inclined to feel sorry for them. They will never climb Classical's creaking stairs or poke fun at her very venerable architecture. They will not experience the satisfaction of having run the gauntlet of education that is Classical and survived - the gauntlet that stretches from the Latin that is Bobo, to the odor that is chemistry, to the precision that is physics, to the xy that is math, to the past that is history, to the inspiration that is English. Classical is not a neighborhood school, its district crosses the city from Tatnuck Square to Grafton Street, and it draws its students from every street, lane, and drive in between. Newton Hill High School may have a new gym- nasium, but will it have that cosmopolitan atmosphere where a Kelly's best friend may be a Cohen and knowledge not background makes for the wealthy student? The wind does blow through the walls of this old building, but the wind, should it blow on into eternity, will never dispel the memories which they contain, it will never obliterate the sights which they have seen, it will never dislodge the heritage which Classical alumni hold dear: the heritage that boasts of dedicated teachers and eager stu- dents, a heritage that reaches back into an- other century and that like champagne, has improved with age, a heritage that lays claim to Rhodes Scholars at Oxford and summa cum laude graduates of Harvard and Yale, and an endless army of individuals, poets, playwrights, lawyers, aviators, nurses, teach- ers, engineers, and this year a mayor, individ- uals who have launched their lives with a Classical oar and have rowed a little more smoothly because of it. I suppose that it is the class orator's duty to make some somber predictions for his class and the world of which they are about to become part. I do not feel, howeer, that C LASS O RATIO N lCOr1finue-dl it is necessary for anyone to tell you of the speed at which our world, or perhaps I shuld say our universe, is travelling, or of the myriad of new frontiers and challenges that have emerged within our lifetime. In fact, when I wrote this speech, I was de- terred from mentioning our latest astronau- tical accomplishment for fear that the feat would be surpassed before I delivered my speech. I shall not attempt, therefore, to fore- tell the future of the world, but I do believe, after having studied, eaten, played, and with this class for the past three years, that there is nothing that it cannot do and that the future, be what it may, will present no hurdle too high for its members to clear. I feel greatly indebted to this ancient edifice and its fine staff, and I am extremely proud and grateful to have been a member of this class. Barry Z.
