You have given us the foundation which we need as the stepping stone to further knowledge. Today we welcome you as guests of honor and place upon your heads in token of our filial love and devotion a symbolic wreath of laurel. To our teachers we give a most sincere greet- ting in appreciation of your great patience, untiring effort, and helpful guidance in pre- paring us for our future careers. The glory of whatever success we may achieve is yours. We shall always hope to prove worthy of your confidence and trust. To our friends, also, whose words of encour- agement have brightened many seemingly dark days we stand indebted. Although the principal purpose of our school- ing is to gain knowledge, we shall, never the less, be greatly rewarded by the lasting friend- ships we have made at Classical. ln conclusion, I would like to offer our heart felt greetings to all. Class History DIANA ROSSI Who are we? Where are we going? What lies ahead of us? These are the questions that we asked ourselves as we stood on the thres- hold of thai' which was to serve as the last and the most important step in our prepartion for college. We hesitated for a moment, and then, defiantly, we tip-toed into the halls of old Classical High. This year was to be one of discovery for us, a year when no one knew who Avis Parker, Jerry Jacobs, or Dick Freeman were. All two hundred and eighty-five of us made our way to the auditorium. Looking at it, we said, as our first reaction, They can't be Serious! ls this really the auditorium? ls that platform actually the stage? These questions, however, only served to show how much we had yet to learn, and we did learn. We discovered that it is not the building nor the equipment in it that make a school but the faculty and the students that work there. At the same time that we dis- covered this fact, Pete Swenson, Pete Kusek, Merrie Lindquist, and Diane Mason also dis- covered Lano's. Mr. 'Couming greeted us when we finally arrived in the assembly hall. This year was also to be a memorable one for him, for, not only was this our first year as students of Classical High, but also it was Mr. Couming's first year as its principal. We meekly accepted our position as the low- liest of the lower classmen, and soon we were engaged in mapping out the confusing con- glomeration of room numbers that seemed to follow no set pattern. The twenties were on the third floor. The thirties were on the fourth floor, and, of course, where would you expect to find the forties? ln the basement! Naturally! We soon discovered that the even numbers are on the right side of the building, while the odd numbers are on the left, or was it the other way around? All these things made us wonder if there ever was a blueprint to the design of Classical. When the first edition of the Argus was published, we saw that Patty Bergstedt, Rick Miller, and Debbie Mitchell were the first mem- bers of our class that were popular enough to have their names published in What Not . Our true value was discovered when Mary St. John received the leading role in the Christmas play and when Judy and Janet Garabedian, Meg Degnan, and Ginny Cox made the girls' field hockey team. Not to be out-done by the girls, Dick Clarke, Kev Cronin, Dickie Briggs, and Bob Koenig joined the indoor track team. Our first social affair was the Senior Variety Show, A Touch of Seasoning , in which Gema Sermuksnis made her first appearance with the Lithuanian dance chorus. When the honor roll for this first semester was published, we dis- covered that Dick Clarke and Dick Freeman had made the four A honor roll, while Anne Abdella, Steve Adelson, Kev Cronin, Lauren Fins, Harriet Foxhall, and Paul Kelleher had to be satisfied with only three A's. Considering that they had only four courses, this average was a fair one. As our first semester here at Classical drew to a close, we reluctantly greeted the new arri- vals to our ranks, little realizing that among them were Karen Brown, our senior vice-presi- dent, Ruth Chervin, the versatile director of our Variety show, and Karen Goff, a winner of the National Essay Contest. We glided through the remaining months of our first year, wondering if the homework was really getting easier or if we were just growing accustomed to it. We attended the Senior Play and the Spring Concert. Sandy Morse, Linda Paul, Bob Koenig, Mike Rose, Billy Artz, and Jeff Burack decided to lend their skill to the tennis team, while Patty Bergstedt, Karen Brown, Anne Niemitz, Judy Ryan, and Sheila Smith happily gave their voices to the cheerleaders. Finally the last week of school was upon us. We realized that, with the exception of the mass migration to Commerce at mid-term, we had survived our sophomore year. Rested and raring to go, we returned to Classical after a wonderful, relaxing summer vacation. So were our teachers, moreover, who seemed to have nothing more to say except, The assignment for tomorrow will belh Once back in the swing of things, how- ever, we decided to make this year a true accomplishment. First on the agenda was the election of class officers. Dick Freeman was chosen president, Harriet Foxhall, secretary, Kev Cronin, treasurer, and l, vice-president. When the first edition of the Argus was published this year, we were proud to see that Gail Mandell, Karen Brown, and Judy Cohen were the new assistant editors, while Marcia Rothstein and Sheila Whitman were now helping to manage the finances. Class History lcominuedl The overabundance of energy and ambition that we possessed was put too good advantage when most of us decided to take the December Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test. Smiling and self-confident, we entered the testing rooms from which we emerged three hours later look- ing bedraggled and hoping that we would do ibetter in May. Ever undaunted, we continued our struggle to make this year a successful one. Sandy Morse, Avis Parker, and Sumner Silverman con- tributed to our effort by entering the Declama- tion Contest in which Sandy brought honor to our school by winning second prize. ln order to prove that we had what it takes in all fields, twenty-one members of our class partici- pated in the Senior Variety Show, Let There Be Song. Among these were the stars of the silent film, Edie Webster and Marilyn Stiles, that talented beatnik with the guitar, Avis Parker, and the girl with the fascinating voice, Carolyn Friguglietti. lt was in this same spirit that Ernie Waxman, Joe White, Ruth Chervin and Avis took part in the Senior Play. Time Out For Ginger. Acting, however, was not the only talent that we possessed, as was shown when Kathy Bledsoe, Pauline Krawcynski and Ralph Caputo won gold keys in the Scholastic Art Awards. May sixth arrived, and again we bravely attempted the College Boards. This time we emerged a little happier, but still praying for an increase of knowledge before next year. May also brough the highlight of our second year, our iunior prom which was entitled Opus 6O. lt was a huge success in spite of its name. Patty Bergstedt was chosen as its queen and her court consisted of Marion Cameron, Becky Gay, Nancy Hickey, Liz Pulda, and Marcia Rothstein. ' One day in June we held our Junior Picnic at Look Park in Northhampton. We all had to admit that Becky Gay displayed sheer courage when she stood on the very top of that very shaky pyramid. As the days passed, we realized that we were nearing the close of our second year here at Classical when we heard the seniors practi- cing the graduation exercises every fifth period. Longingly, we awaited that fast approaching day when we would have our home-rooms on the first floor and when we would be able to beat the mad rush at one-fifteen. Gradua- tion brought honor to our class when Karen Brown received the Aletheia Award and John Coakley, the Harvard Book Prize. As the seniors left the auditorium singing the well rehearsed Alma Mater , we happily and eagerly took their places. Since this year was to be our last and final one at Classical, we decided to make it our most memorable. We elected as class officers Jerry Jacobs, Karen Brown, Sandy Morse, and Richard Briggs. A new addition to our class was Claudy Boy, who was imported all the way from France. lt was amazing to discover how many of the boys were interested in learning French this year. During the first few months, we devoted our time to the writing of applications to colleges, anxiously waiting for word of acceptance or reiection. We then applied for scholarships. Between applications, we spent agonizing morri- ents over our chemistry. Shall we ever forget the first time that we used sulfur in the labora- tory? We also underwent the College Boards once again. Honor was heaped upon us when Dick Freeman was named a semifinalist in the Na- tional Merit Scholarships Competition. Honor- able mention was also bestowed upon Harriet Foxhall, Mike Berrini, Leonard Kruczynski, Dick Clarke, and Paul Kelleher, Norman Raphael, William Rosen, and Mike Sandman. We gained more distinction when Judy Garabedian, Judy Ephraim, Harriet Foxhall, Karen Goff, and Judy Cohen were chosen the winners of the Nation- al Poetry and Essay Contest and had their works published in the National Anthology . At the same time, John lannotti was chosen to be our representative for Student Good Government Day. ln January we held our Senior Hop, Irving Street Beat , at the Yellow Barn in Northboro. lt was an astonishing success, and the beat , which was provided by the Mellow Tones, was really very good, especially during the inter- mission. l am certain that Linda Young will agree with me on that point. Our variety show, Hormania , immediately followed the hop. Under the expert direction of Ruth Chervin, Elaine Rappaport, Judy Ephraim, Harriet Fox- hall and Stephanie Mooradian, this event was also a marvelous success. After all, with a Mistress and Master of ceremonies such as Avis Parker and Ernie Waxman, how could it fail? 'Can we ever forget that closing fashion show which starred Geraldine Jacobs and Boberino Savage? I know that Mr. Powers will lnever forget Avis' and Ernie's rendition of Let's Do lt . Spring brought our Senior Play, the distribu- tion of our photographs, the final installments on our year book, and the growing excitement as we looked ahead to the inevitable. The week of the inevitable has finally ar- rived. We have spent three wonderful, enligh- tening years here at Classical High, years in which we have made lasting 'bonds of friendship with teachers as well as with classmates. Only the final touches remain. Now we look forward to the ioy of our prom and to the solemnity of graduation. Soon we shall stand before another school. We shall ask ourselves the same questions that we had in mind as we stood in the front of Classical three years ago, but now, thanks to our education here, we kgow who we are. We know where we are going, and we have the self-confidence to face what lies ahead of us . We shall soon leave Classical High, but its memory will remain in our hearts forever. 1 Class Will -- 1961 JOHN IANNOTTI We, the class of 1961, being of un- recognized ability and dormant ambition, endowed with little freedom other than is exercised now, do hereby benevolently, brilliantly and bountifully bequeath to the successors of our great class the fol- lowing invaluable Iworthlessl items. To Mr. Couming, a sound proof office. To Miss Woodis, an IBM machine to correct German notebooks. To Miss Gilbert, a policeman's cap and nightstick to disperse the crowds around her room in the morning. To Miss Shaugnessy, a new class to instruct in the finer arts of 'ghostmanship'. To Miss Phillips, a good question. To Mr. Kelly, a milk machine and a book on logs. To Mr. Cravedi, four classes of Horace Mann students so he won't have to say when I was in school . . . . To the unsophisticated and scatter- brained class of 1962, we leave a world almanac underlining the section snow- storms for Variety Shows. To the noisy, nosy, troublesome class of 1963, we leave the school spirit ex- hibited by Patricia Bergstedt. To the incoming class of 1964, we leave our TV rooms, tennis courts and swimming pool. The yearbook editorial board leaves its most famous write-up, not well known but well known by those who know her. Richard Clarke, Kevin Cronin, Rich- ard Briggs, William Lirange, Timothy Lazaro and Herbert MacDonald leave the track team in a heck ofa mess. The class officers Jerome Jacobs, Sandra Morse, Karen Brown and Richard Briggs leave their deepest sympathy to the incoming officers, for the ordeal they are about to face. Gema Sermuksnis, Violeta Matule- vicius, Rasa Dedinas and Rita Gailiunas leave Classical with a new name, Little Lithuania . Roger Goodell, Phillip Callahan, Dave Batstone, Robert Harootyan, John Coakley and I leave the memory and the uniforms of our attempt at cheerleading. Robert Savage, Jerome Jacobs, Robert Harootyan, Paul Harper and Phil Class Will ICOM-dv Baker leave their office jobs to the most talkative subordinates. Ann Lindberg, Richard Freeman, Harriet Foxhall and Ann Abdella leave the secret of their studying: . . . osmosis. Dennis Collins leaves in rather high spirits . Sheila Smith leaves her option on a three acre farm in Lithuania to whoever wants it. Robert Savage leaves a word to the wise, stay away from redheads. Charles Cary leaves saying- Come fly with me. John Gilberg left in the direction of Lincoln Downs. Judy Berenson leaves behind one eraser, one pencil and one bothered and bewildered redheaded iunior. Dave Johnson leaves dressed in his Boy Scout uniform. Claudia Boy leaves . . . Darn it. Eileen Anderson leaves her pillow to some soft seated sophomore. Linda Young leaves looking for a two pound can of instant boy while Rebbeca Gay and Marilyn Prouty won't be satis- fied without a gross of them. Donald Cushing leaves as quiet as he came. David Hebb leaves the tradional Salatubi Bell to the Cheerleaders of 1962. Virginia Cox leaves all her ex-beaus in a state of shock. Michael Berrini leaves loooking like a premature graduate. Robert Freedman leaves a tack on nearly every chair. Paul Kelleher leaves with J. R. right beside him. Donald Kallio leaves his 'IO2 aver- age in Solid geometry to be divided among the 58 and 59ers. Pete Kusek almost left his teeth behind. Joseph White leaves the memory of his orations in class. T Pete Swenson leaves all the junior girls swooning. And finally l leave, making a lot of teachers happy. This document in its entirety includ- ing censored material has been witnes- sed, signed but probably will never be carried out. Witnessed by: The Classical Tiger 8g Spirit of Scholasticism Your Class Testator: John lannotti Cl ss Gration RICHARD FREEMAN Aristotle once said that man a citizen of a state or country, the world. Today we are made actions of one man may have effect on many distant people. in mind, Americans must take is not so much as a citizen of aware that the a far-reaching With this idea on new ways of thinking and new responsibility. We must become concerned with the many other people beyond our own acquaintances, beyond our own city, beyond even the Western Hemisphere. This summer an international youth con- ference was held in Holland under the auspices of the Young Mens' Christian Association. I had known for some time that I was to be a dele- gate, and I had formed some idea of what to expect. I imagined a large assembly of strange-looking and-acting people with foreign sounding names. Perhaps I would like them, perhaps I would not. I decided that I would at least try. I anticipated long, dull lectures and group meetings. From previous experience I expected the conference to be interesting at best, but not exciting. The conference theme was international brotherhood and understand- ing, which seemed to be at the time rather vague, abstract concepts. Later on they became more meaningful, more real. Something unusual occurred at the confer- ence, Yes, there were many strange people, and the lengthy addresses and meetings found their way into the program. At the same time, though, something else was happening. Young people of America were meeting young people of Africa, youths of Europe were becoming ac- quainted with youths of Asia. We ate, slept, played, and worshipped together. Not ,only were we meeting, but we were liking each other too. Young Americans, confident of their na- tion's superiority, were discovering that other countries had something to offer. Americans who had previously expressed indifference in in' foreign affairs were finding themselves vitally interested in the Congo situation. In fact, as far as knowledge of foreign policy and govern- ment were concerned, Americans made a poor showing. How often in discussion with Clarence Liberty, delegate from Liberia, was I embar- rassed by my own lack of knowledge. I can vividly recall the discomfort of being unable to answer CIarence's probing questions about my own country. The Africans knew more about America than I did! I made then a firm resolve to take a more active interest in my own country and its place in the world. Our discussions, however, were not con- fined to politics. Out of this mutual interest, friendships grew. We found we all had more in common than we had thought. Our nationa- lity and our race seemed to matter little. Some- how our families, our friends, our faiths found their way into the conversations. Brotherhood had in a short time changed from an empty word to one full of meaning. We all knew we no longer could think of Africans, Europeans, or Asians as foreigners, but only as people we knew and cared about. As the short con- ference reached its conclusion, everyone was determined that this spirit should not die there, but that we should bring it back intact to our own countries. We felt we could impart some of our own enthusiasm to others and stir them to action. On this note the conference ended, and the delegates left for home. Several months later in the United States I realized that I was disappointed and discour- aged. My feeling for international brotherhood had 'been diminished. Somewhere, somehow I had lost the genuine spirit we had all had be- fore. Perhaps it was gone because I was separ- ated from my conference friends, or maybe because my American companions seemed un- concerned and indifferent. There seemed to be no way to regain my enthusiasm. I was swept with a feeling of defeat, both for my self and for America. Perhaps I was wrong that there was no one who felt as I did. Our new president in a cam- paign speech proposed the organization of groups of Americans to help speed social and economic development in backward areas of the world. He has fulfilled this promise for a government supported agency with the crea- tion of the Peace Corps. Although still being devoloped, the Peace Corps is a sign that America really cares. Through the Corps tal- ented Americans will Iend their ability, effort, and time to help others. We are all aware that millions of people in the world live in poverty and ignorance. American aid in fields such as agriculture, santitation, education, social wel- fare, conservation, engineering, and public ad- Class Oration lCOn'iHUedl ministration is sure to help alleviate these con- ditions. The leader of the Peace Corps, R. Sargent Shriver, and others in authority have indicated that the Corps will be no place for anyone wanting a three-year vacation or an escape from responsibility. Whatever the Corps accom- plishes in social or economic advancement will come as the direct result of a great deal of hard work. Education is the Corps' principle weapon towards this end. Since extreme illiteracy and ignorance plague many countries, particularly in Africa and Asia, schools will be set up first. This will demand well-qualified, well-educated Americans. Extremely important is the fact the United States will not be iust sending money, machines, or literature. This time we will also be sending people--people well skilled in their fields, people willing to give the necessary two or three years of their lives, people who have a knowledge both of their own language and culture and that of their hosts, people who are willing to live as others actually do, people who are caught up in the desire to help others. The fact that the minimum age for the Peace Corps is eighteen is significant. The leaders of our country have recognized several important facts. The young people of the country have the necessary strength and drive for such a pro- gram. Young people, for the most part, have not yet had time to make unfair preiudice a part of their lives. The youthful spirit of adven- ture is a powerful force. Those who are sent, therefore, may be people like you and me, We are all confronted with a choice. The Peace Corps will give us a real opportunity to use our time and efforts for others' benefit. On the other hand, we may choose to live a typical self-centered existence. We have now been offered an opportunity to serve others or our- selves. Which will you choose?
