g . Students Learn The Importance Miss Christine Sauer and Mrs. Mary Erard prepared a unit on creative read- ing with their classes. Their students read a series of short stories and ex- pressed creatively some aspect of one story that had particular meaning for them. Some students chose to express themselves by composing music or by taping a combination of musical pieces to effect a desired mood. Mrs. Erard made a colorful display of the work of those students who chose to express themselves by drawing or painting. Miss Almeda King, Charles Mitchell, Beverly Roberts, Christopher Hourihan, and William McCarthy are amused as they listen to Brian Santaniello read his directions to Veronica Diaz: How to Ear Spaghetti Properly. With this as- signment, Miss King is teaching her class to give directions clearly, hoping that it will help them to express them- selves precisely ancl concisely in other forms of written and spoken communi- cation. Creative writers should function like loaded cameras. Reproduce what you see in the picture, suggests Mrs. Mabel Morrill to her Creative Writing class. Taking careful notes on the pictures are Karen Pierce, Douglas Black, and Nancy Grimaldi. Matthew Levin is conferring with Mrs. Morrill. Two of the resulting poetry-pictures won honors in a poetry contest.
