The Thankless .lob of Administration The members of the Board of Education are a group of five citizens, elected by the people, serving without pay, and dedicated to the task of providing a good education for the children and youth of Oklahoma City. Upon them rests the responsibility of making every major decision and approving all expenditures. They spend many hours each week studying re- ports, comparing figures, and seeking ways to stretch our school dollar. ' To help them in their task, they have the Superintendent, Dr. Melvin W. Barnes, and his competent staff which includes his assistants, supervisors, research people, and secretaries. They make the plans and then carry out the programs which have been approved by the Board of Education, such as educational tele- vision. They provide assistance for the teachers through workshops, the Curriculum Library, and audio-visual aids. They provide for main- tenance of the sprawling physical plant of ninety-one schools, Administration Building, and warehouses. They operate the school lunch program and health and activities pro- grams. We are fortunate in having a super- intendent who knows what a good education is and who is determined to give every child the opportunity of having a good education, and in having a school board that agrees with our superintendent and lends him support. Melvin W. Barnes Superintendent of Schools OKLAHOMA CITY is unique in having a school board on Bennett, presidentj C. B. McCroy, Vice-President Otto F which all members have served as president.
