Index .s..ss Dedication May I have your attention for the aft- ernoon announcements. This phrase and the voice that goes with it are very famil- iar at Classen. The face that goes with this voice is seen by Classen students at every turn. Within the man to whom this face and voice belong is one of the most gen- erous of hearts. Making the announce- ments is probably the least of this man's responsibilities, but it is for them that he is best known. It is the other duties linked with the office of vice-principal which bring more responsibility than many peo- ple could handle. This role is vital to the success of any school. Needless to say, this man plays a major part in Classen's success. To this man-for his understand- ing, his unfailing help at all times, his generosity, and above all, his undying de- votion to our Classen High School-we, the students, dedicate the 1959 ORBIT to Dr. Bill Lillard. Acknowledgement Another year has gone by, another ORBIT has been placed in the hands of the Classen stu- dent body. We have tried to record accurately for you the history of I958 and l959 at C.H.S. The success of this year's ORBIT rests on sev- eral very able shoulders. Our first thank you goes to the CLASSEN LIFE. Without the use of their cam-era we should have been lost. Next in line are Sue Hoisington and Mark Birming- ham. Photography is half of our book and these two made this half as great as it is. Know- ing we had Cindy Cartmell - our sports- minded, comedian, business manager-work- ing for the ORBIT was always a reassuring thought. Clever Copy Editor Alice Sullivant is also editor of the CLASSEN LIFE. Jann Low- ther, John Bryan, and Sally Sage took time out from ORBIT duties to publish a student direc- tory. The art work on the directory cover was done by Bill Murphy, and to these four people we extend a warm thank you. Barbara Bryan handled the senior section this year with the hand of an expert. Sandy Connelly gave Cindy Cartmell a hand an the girls' sports and Tommy Rowles turned out the entire boys' sports section with help from Steve Fisher on copy. Paul Ruscha did our art work for the club section which Linda Casey helped organize. The teachers have cooperated to the utmost. Mr. Fleming, Dr. Lillard, Mrs. Booher and Mrs. Hines helped us whenever we needed them. The staff: Becky Ogilvie, Peggy Prag, Sherran Woody, Anne Johnson, Mary Sherman, Sharon Fewkes, Lu Nelms, Nancy Seaton and Diane Neyland were always at hand when needed. We can't find words sincere enough to ex- press our gratitude and appreciation to every- one who at anytime or in anyway helped with this book. Even with all our troubles, it has been one of the most rewarding experiences of our lives. We only hope that each one of you enjoy what you will get out of this book a frac- tion as much as we have enjoyed what we put into it. We extend our deepest thanks to each and everyone of you. ZYQAZZQL ZYQZZZLL Our Classen High School Classen, a dominating building in the Okla- homa City High School system, is a grand building, full of glory. It has been great for thirty-nine years, Although our stay here is short, we hope when we leove we can take a small part of her greatness and glory with us. She has offered us academic achievement and leadership training, and along with these a lasting desire to serve our nation and world. Thank you, Classen, for what you have given us. Our memories for you will be of honor, in- tegrity, steadfastness, and loyalty. Activities Take Up Students' Time HAVE YOU BEEN TO THE LAND OF BAVARIA, sing Martha Miller, Alice Sullivant and Linda Casey. Upon them rests the responsibility of making every major decision and approving all expenditures. They spend many hours each week studying re- ports, comparing figures, and seeking ways to stretch our school dollar. ' To help them in their task, they have the Superintendent, Dr. Melvin W. Barnes, and his competent staff which includes his assistants, supervisors, research people, and secretaries. They make the plans and then carry out the programs which have been approved by the Board of Education, such as educational tele- vision. They provide assistance for the teachers through workshops, the Curriculum Library, and audio-visual aids. They provide for main- tenance of the sprawling physical plant of ninety-one schools, Administration Building, and warehouses. They operate the school lunch program and health and activities pro- grams. We are fortunate in having a super- intendent who knows what a good education is and who is determined to give every child the opportunity of having a good education, and in having a school board that agrees with our superintendent and lends him support. Malcolm Batchelor, Stanley Bozarth, and Dick Fowler are three students who rate high schalasticallyC?l Math Analysis is an honor class taught over television. Math Department Adds New Subiect Classen's Mathematics Department pro- vided special courses for accelerated junior high students this year. Eighth grade students in this category took Algebra l, and ninth graders were offered Plane Geometry. For- merly all students were required to take seventh and eighth grade arithmetic, and in the ninth grade they took either Applied Math or Algebra l, depending on their mathematical aptitude. Just one year of math is required in senior high school for graduation, but the following courses are offered: Algebra l, Plane Geom- etry, Algebra ll, Solid Geometry, Trigonom- etry, and Math Analysis which is open only to seniors and is televised. Courses in Algebra l and Algebra ll are also taught on television. Mrs. Della Roberts heads the Mathe- matics Department which is staffed by Mrs. Maxine Haney, Mrs, Ruth Wooten, C. Richard Buck, Mrs. Marilyn Callender, Lonnie Gilli- land, Mrs. Margerite Jones, and John Simp- son. These teachers and their courses will help Classen prepare good mathematicians. SALLY SAGE is having a hard time demonstrating her problem by using a graph. Algebra ll is still not easy despite the new methods of teaching that are employed by Mr. Hill on television. Algebra will always be Algebra. HOLDING THE ATTENTION of a group of seventh graders is no easy chore, but Mrs. Wooten has the situation well in hand. These eager beavers are learning all about seventh grade arithmetic. The upper classmen should follow their example. SOMEHOW THIS PICTURE just doesn't get across the idea that was intended. Ray Organ, Tom Rowles, and James Crosby, the boy with the headache, are supposedly listening to an explanation ot a trig problem which may prove to be difficult. A good percentage of jobs now require some practical understanding of science. With the advancement of satellites, mis- siles, and atomic power, we are in need of more scientists to invent better rockets and perhaps even one that will carry a human to the n'ioon. Science Department teachers and. their sub- jects are: Mrs. Marilyn Parsons, Biology .and Ad- vanced Biology, Mrs. Neva Chelf, Chemistry, Mrs. Dorothy Frosh, General Science, Mrs. Beverly Key, Physiology. Sharon doesn't wear cowboy clothes every day, honest! SUSAN WELBORN manifests' interest in whatever causes Marc Appleton to appear so smug. Susan and Marc are fel- low students in Mrs. Parsons' beginning Biology second hour class. sm-,f Q2 HISTORY CLASSES use maps and globes to a great ex- tent in their daily course of study. Johnny Tucker and Nadele Mitchell appear to be interested in their globe study, although their thoughts are probably tar away. PSYCHOLOGY STUDENT Chuck Seward is practicing his couchside manner on tellow classmate Mary Lou Braddy. Mary Lou is probing deep into her past in search of clues that may help Chuck in his psychoanalysis. Social Studies Dept Takes All Students The Social Studies Department is one un- der which every student at Classen High School studies before his graduation. The histories ot our state, country, and the world are consid- ered important in a proper secondary school education. Included in the Social Studies Depart- ment is a great variety of courses taught by eleven of Classen's capable faculty. Ably heading the department is James Petree, chairman. Students are ottered courses in American History, World History, Economics and Gov- ernment, Oklahoma History and Civics, ahd a course combined as Psychology and Sociology. Television was used as a teaching aid again this year by Miss Lorena Milam in the Oklahoma History semester other course. Eco- nomics and Government was ottered at Clas- sen tor the first time this year. All courses offered by Mr. Petree's de- partment prove invaluable to any student pre- paring tor a college education. l TELEVISION is becoming very popular as o teaching aid, Carol Ferguson prepares for class while Sandra McQuary changes channels to something more interesting until teacher, Miss Lorena Milam, returns to the room. MARTHA MILLER is showing the students of Wesley Beck's American History class who is boss as she takes over his classes for a day. Teacher-Student Day was designed to show students the everyday duties ofa teacher. SHERRY HAMILTON leads another classroom discussion as a regular part of the Economics and Government class. The class listens attentively as she expounds on her vast knowledge of government. 27 THERE IS NO QUESTION in anyone's mind as to who is boss in James Petree's classes. He makes it clear to all his students. Mr. Petree is head of the department and teaches American History, and Economics and Government. YOU NEVER KNOW what will develop in the darkroom. Mark Birmingham and Sue Hoising- ton as ORBIT photographers spend much of their time in the darkroom . . . Ahemmm . . . developing pictures. This year the photog- raphers were handicapped by the theft of the ORBIT camera. wmg. i ONE OF THE JOBS of the yearbook staff is to publish the STU- DENT DIRECTORY. This responsibility was given to the sixth hour class. Jann Lowther, John Bryan, and Sally Sage are taking heed of the sign behind them. We are proud of this year's di- rectory. Journalism Dept. Does Publications The Journalism Department is composed of the two school publications, CLASSEN LIFE and ORBIT. CLASSEN LIFE has won more national honors than any other city school publication. lt is published bi-monthly and sponsors the annual Man of Dis- tinction Contest. Miss Dorothy Butler teaches the Beginning and Advanced Journalism Classes. ORBIT, a review of the Classen year, is published by the classes in Yearbook. Mrs. Jeane Williams has Yearbook Classes fifth and sixth hours. The sixth hour class also publishes the Student Directory. This year's ORBIT could not have been published but for the generosity of CLASSEN LIFE'S staff in plac- ing its camera at the disposal of the ORBIT photog- raphers. Carol is in the advanced debate class. Advanced debate students win many honors for Classen. IN PREPARING for high school, junior high English is very important. Miss Dorothy Butler presents some interesting material to her attentive eighth grade class. Miss Butler also teaches Journalism. In this jet age, with the focus on science, it is important that we learn to speak, write, and read our own language. As our world grows smaller we must be able to communicate with people of for- eign lands. At Classen, the Language Department offers English, French, Spanish, and Latin. English is studied by Classen students for six years, and they may study four years in any of the foreign lan- guages. The Foreign Language Department spon- sors a Language Week in February. The Speech Department offers courses in Be- ginning Speech, High School Speech, Debate, Dra- matics,,and Stagecraft. The Drama Department produced two highly successful plays, Our Town and The Man Who Came to Dinner. The Stage- craft Class is in charge of lighting and scenery for all the school productions. The speech and drama classes have won fame for Classen in many tournaments. The National Student Congress Trophy, awarded in the summer of l958, is the first de- bate trophy won by Classen since the school be- came a junior-senior high school four years ago. PATSY DRAPER finds something humorous in her Latin text. Judi Blankenship, representing Spanish, helps with the planning of Language Week at Classen. Martha Bell checks Judy's watch to be sure she's not going to be late to French class. The Language Week is in February of each year. Students may enroll in Business Math, Typing, Shorthand, Business English, Bookkeeping, Business Machines, and Introduction to Business. Students learn filing, salesmanship, and the organization of business in Introduction to Business. ln Business Machines, students learn how to operate adding machines, calcula- tors, and dictapho-nes. This department is headed by Mrs. Sue Branson. The other teachers are Mrs. Carolyn Cluck, Miss Margerite Jones, and Mrs. Julia McPheeters. Any of the business courses offered help to ready students for active participation in the world of business. DO YOU EVER have the feeling that nobody likes you? Sharon Wolfe is surrounded by a roomful of empty chairs --even the teacher's gone. Sharon really isn't unpopular! she just came in after school to type a term theme. VN PAY ATTENTION to the ditto-machine, Judy Webb! Miss Lorraine Bell really needs those tests, so you'd better quite watching the photographer and run them through. lncidentally, Judy's reward is a preview of the questions. ,ff JEANIE FRANKLIN operates the switchboard dur- ing her daily stint as office aide. Office aides per- form invaluable service to the school while learning useful skills themselves. CAROL FAULKNER, office aide, has the pleasant task of picking up the attendance cards each day. This job is much sought after by aides because they enjoy the free- dom of the halls while other students are in class. 5, . vp.. . are 5 l i iL1lg ,S , WATCH YOUR TYPING BOOK and not your fingers, stu- dents are reminded as they peck their way through one more daily speed test. The girls have many sewing opportunities as they may choose what they want to make. SEE, DO IT LIKE THIS, Joyce Wilkison tells Yvonne Taylor as she struggles with the hemming of her apron. Making aprons is the first thing the seventh grade seamstresses do. Y :iw HWYIELIL-I LOQK AT MEll' exclaims Janet Wallace, as she models her newly made dress for Nancy Stock- we . ancy is still working on hers. Both of these sewing students make some of their own clothes. 34 Homemakers Look to Future Eat, drink, and be merry, could very well have been the motto of the cook- ing classes this year, for that is exactly what they did. Joining in the fun, was their teacher, Mrs. Ethel Preble. The seventh graders learned break- fast cookery, and proper manners. Eighth graders worked on lunch menus, and the senior high students learned about meals for different types of en- tertaining. Under the direction of Miss Mary Brucher, the seventh grade sewing classes learned to make aprons and skirts, and the eighth through twelfth graders made dresses, gowns, suits and ambitious coats. HOW ABOUT PUTTING THIS UP? Vicki Fincher asks Margaret Landrum . . . The task of decorating the bulletin boards in the cooking room is left up to the various classes. Each month, a different class is in charge of putting up an interesting and educa- tional design. CRAMMING for the Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow test, are Carole Garrett, Betty Copeland, and Carolyn Dugger. This test is an important scholarship test for senior girls. The All-American Homemaker of Tomorrow receives a 55,000 scholarship. The Industrial Arts Department is one to which particular attention should be paid by those who are considering a vocational edu- cation. There are six different courses offering the best of training, skills, and practice. This department offers the following courses: Driver's Education, Electronics, Mechanical Drawing, Metalwork, and Woodwork. Students taking the Driver's Education course will never regret it, for they receive ex- pert training and will be given a deduction on their automobile insurance policy. Electronics students will be able to help us in our hour of need someday, for our tele- vision sets might go on the blink. Mechanical Drawing Classes, made up of a large number of boys, eagerly welcome any female members to join them at their drawing boards. The girls in those classes are extended courtesies. Much fine work comes from the Metal- work and Woodwork groups. The boys who take these courses make beautiful and deco- rative furnishings for their homes. The biggest task the vocal music depart- ment undertook this year was the CLASSEN CLASSIC'S production of Annie Get Your Gun. This show which brought publicity to Classen through pictures and stories on the front page of the Sunday Oklahoman magazine section and in the Oklahoma City Times developed much pride in Classen's musical department, not only by the participants in the production, but by the student body and patrons. Classen's early season schedule saw the Comets down Shawnee 25-24 in the consola- tion finals ot the Southwestern State Invita- tional Basketball Tourney. Shawnee, atter the loss, rebounded to win lo consecutive games and balloon their rating to the top spot among class AA schools. The season opener 'at Midwest City was a wild affair with Classen emerging with a 52-50 conquest ot the Bombers. The vivacious 5' 7 , brown-eyed senior filled the royal position with all the charm and poise of a true queen. ORBIT Queen is the only all- school queen elected at Classen. The girl must be a senior and have a good grade average. She is elected for her beauty and personality. Tamara has been a Meteor Queen candidate for two years, a Basketball Queen Candidate one year, and declined the Blue Jacket Queen nomination because of her election as ORBIT Queen. She possesses as much talent as beauty. She has played a major role in one CLASSEN CLASSICS and starred in two more. She is also a familiar sight as an all-school cheerleader. Her personality made a bright spot in Clas- sen's halls. The ORBIT congratulates its i958-i959 queen for helping Classen through another successful year by a warm and spar- kling reign. Football Queen SUHJFU 0l'll'l8 g Sandy Connelly, who when standing up real tall manages to reach 5 feet lk inches, is towered over by her loyal subjects, the Classen football team. Sandy, whose bubbling personality is a familiar sight at Classen, devotes most of her time and energy to being an all-school cheer- leader. When not supporting a Classen sports event, she can usually be found participating in one. Sandy is one of the most active members of the Girls' O Club. Her enthusiasm for sports aroused everyone's support. Sandy was also a can- didate for Blue Jacket Queen. ws 'J Blue Jacket Queen ufiie aged The Blue Jackets, with an enlarged membership, chose from six candidates their queen, Susie Hayes. Susie, besides being an ORBIT Queen Candidate, Bas- ketball Queen Candidate, and all-school cheerleader, is also an active member of the Girls' O Club. She held the office of secretary for two semesters this year for the club. Susie is also a familiar sight to mem- bers of the mixed choir. She is active in chorus and is past-president of the organi- zation. Susie also finds time to work for the Comes Pep Club and has held several offices. Meteor Queen anef Mil CLC? Janet Wallace is usually seen as a busy Classette. Janet has been a member of the Classettes for four years. She has held the offices of sergeant-at-arms, cheerleader, and treasurer. Johnny was also Top Cowhand for this year's Chuckwagon Supper. He has been vice-president of his homeroom and was a candidate for Prince of Friendship. Man of Distinction aurence ufifice Laurence Justice, a familiar name to all at Classen, is now a name of distinc- tion. Laurence captured the title, Man of Distinction, in the election held by the CLASSEN LIFE staff for the second year. Laurence is frequently seen on the Classen stage running for an office or belting out a-song in CLASSEN CLASSICS or an assem- bly. He is president of the Choir this year and devotes a great deal of his time to choir work. Laurence swept the Man of Distinc- tion election out from under the feet of three other finalists with the slogan Lib- erty and Justice for All! -wang.
