fencf their eauty-an u HAMMIIRS BANGING, paint buckets in every corner, glass panels here and there, a saw-dust carpet, and .1 small army of workers-these are sights well-known to the art students at Classen High School. First semester art teachers held classes in the library, in hall corridors, and in any other space that was avail- able. Lack of facilities, trampling students headed toward their lockers, and general confusion became part of the first semester art curriculum. But with all these com- plications teachers and students survived. The rewards of new cabinets, freshly painted rooms, a special art show case, and replacements for most of the trampled supplies more than compensated for the sacrifices at the year's beginning. Included in the new equipment category were the art department's new teachers, Mrs. ,joslyn and Mrs. Little. W'ith them they brought enthusiasm for work and a list of projects that kept students jumping all year long. Some of the more visible projects included re- painting the large picture frames which are on display throughout the building and decorating the sch0ol's many display cases. Few of us realized how interesting a few printed announcements could be until our artists went to work on them. Classen took on a particularly festive air around Christmas, thanks to the holiday decorations made by art students-there's just something about a cross-eyed Santa Claus. Many of the decorations are to be saved and used next year. Several students entered exhibits in the Scholastic Art and Photography contest at John A. Browns Bill Murphy, looking ahead to points in senior English, named his abstract painting Forfwzfzerrs. Classen students got a chance to show off their talents via television when they did a Valentine's program for WKY-TX' on Crea- tive Crafts. For those who enjoyed sketching and extra work in the field of art, Art Nouveau offered a golden oppor- tunity to meet together and swap ideas and inspirations. Saturday sketching parties and school beautification proj- ects took care of a lot of artistic temperament. xr -- .1 9 l
