Although studies are of major import- ance, there is definite need for student participation in extra- curricular activities. Comet students are jiners . Classen has approximately forty school sponsored clubs which help de- velop qualities of initiative, leadership, cooperation and loyalty. Group interests or abilities that do not find satis- faction in an existing organi- zation may petition for the right to found a new order. The Student Council investigates programs and grants charters to desirable groups. Depart- mental clubs offer opportunity to add to experience in acade- mic fields such as commercial art, languages, math, writers and different science clubs. The bi-weekly newspaper and annual afford students oppor- tunities to test abilities in jour- nalistic and creative writing fields. Knowledge and appreciation of art and skill in creating are quali- ties worthy of encouragement and recognition. Classen's Edna B. Stevenson Chapter ot National Art Honor Society was formed on May 8, l944. Art Nouveau members who aspire to membership submit eight pieces of original art work to be judged in state and national contests. Miss Ma ry Lamb Lewis sponsors Classen's Chap- ter. Don Blanding chapter of Quill and Scroll, lnternational Honor Society for High School Journalists, was organized at Classen in l954 by lO members of Classen Life and Orbit staffs. Members are instructed in chapter meetings of the ethics and ideals of journalism inculcated by the Society. Eligibility is based upon scholastic standing and personal qualities of leadership. Mrs. Nevva Sartin, director ot Classen publications sponsors the group. NATIONAL ART HONOR SOCIETY ROW l: Burt, Butler, Cheat- ham, Fenton, Faris, Hosmer. ROW 2: Meadows, Stearns Scott, Bernot, Higbie. QUILL AND SCROLL -22- Eagleton, Holcomb, Harwood, Bailey, Burns, Loy, Barton, Ferguson, Watkins, Elkouri.
