l S - fi K, . I'1l never forget the first time I saw Mr. Taylor on the stage at assembly. Now, here's Mr. Estes with a few announcements, is a phrase I'1l always remember. It took me a long time to discover that teachers are h uman beings, but they are. However, there,s nothing more tenacious than a bunch of teachers obsessed with the ambition of creating a senior, whether a guy is senior material or not. They keep in trim by consoling themselves with, Not at the top, but he's climb- ing. To them we are clay to be fashioned into the best possible design. Our mud-in- your-eyen attitude rarely daunts them. They crowd in an extra chair for the newcomer, push out the walls of the library when we gang-up on late book reports, swab our throats when maladies threaten, and do dozens of little kindnesses every day. Living and moving and having your being among the clatter of chattering type- writers, acrid smells of chemistry experiments, hissing chlorine that irritates your eyes makes you realize you are in the process of getting educated. Sometimes I feel sorry for the head man. But watching a cherished idea materialize has been some consolation this year, no doubt, when annoyances common to the Cap- tain of any crew of 2,000 spontaneous, unpredictable teenagers arose. Our new Classen at Twenty-third and May is the result of Mr. Taylor's ambition for Classen students. He's the drive behind the acquisition of this unique school plant. Upon completion it will represent the finest in the Southwest. But it,s more than a building, it's one man,s dream for and devotion to youth translated into substance- stone and marble, where many generations of Classenites will meet the patience that will steer their vagrancies into useful, successful lives. ,6- ADM

We congratulate the Orbit Staff of 1953- 1954 for a most excellent publication. It contains many happy memories for those who are graduating and will serve as a bond unit- ing and perpetuating a lasting friendship be- tween those who have graduated from our school in the past and those who will carry on in future years. The spirit and philosophy of Classen High School, so charmingly portrayed by word and pictured in these pages, stems straight from the courage, initiative, vision, loyalty, and unselfish service of the student body. This spirit has been developed through a succes- sion of victories and defeats. Every failure, whether great or small, has been a challenge to our young men and young women who rec- ognize dcfeat, but, who refuse to surrender to either failure or defeat. Through the pages of the 1953-1954 Orbit we will be able to clasp hands with those who have gone before and to strive shoulder to shoulder with those who will come in the future, in order that the Comet, which sym- bolizes the spirit of Classen High School, may shine more brightly. May it be a constant reminder of Classenis ideals, traditions, loyal- ties, and devotions. R To the Class of 1954: You have contributed to Classen High School through your work and activities. After your graduation we will follow you with personal interest and prayers for your success. Your school has tried to arrange the pro- gram to meet the extensive and varied tal- ents of its students. May this hook represent culmination of a school career which we trust has prepar- ed you to face tomorroufs problems. May you also know the dignity and joy that comes from serving others and have a sus- tained faith in the integrity of our way of lifef' J. CHESTER SWANSON Superintendent Oklahoma City Schools W. H.
