ARTHUR KINCAID The 1953 Orbit is dedicated-to the man with a smile on his face and sunshine in his heart, Mr. Arthur Kincaid. . .the man who loves and is loved by the students and teachers of Classen High School. . .who through his 29 years of service has known hundreds of Classenites. Mr. Kincaid first came to Oklahoma City in 1920 Where he taught at Irving Opportunity School. In 1924 he began teaching here at Classen where he has been teaching foreign languages ever since. Because of his great interest in education, and his faith in the younger generation, we of Classen can continue, knowing that we will succeed. -2- ,- ,QWTA ff , flym 1'L ,CMO Z' QLQMLU ,dl sf 5 I' ' , 7 A' .ff5?!Wz ,Zfg,5.G fgf,fjgfff4 ,A fl f filed DQ--.Z !,ef4L6x pf, A-0 Q TABLE UF UUNTBNTS ADMINISTRATION .........,...................... 5 to I ORGANIZATION ...,. MS ff f j - A ' ,, 47 , PUREWIIRD We of the Orbit staff chose The Circus for our theme this year because of its similarity with life at Classen. Many students feel that school is all drudgery. But think back, do you remember last August when you were Waiting for school to begin? Do you remember your impatience? Take for instance the members of the Board of Educa- tion and think of them as the circus directors, the superin- tendent as the ring leader, the principal as the barker, the faculty as the animal trainers, the student body, as the animals, the cheerleaders are the clowns, the student council as the managers, and the Orbit staff as the make-up artists. Although we make this comparison, education should be taken seriously. As we have been told time and time again, We are living in an Age of Crises, with danger lurking in all four corners of the earth. It is therefore necessary for our generation to extend an maximum ability in leadership and World understanding. We of the 1953 Orbit class have attempted to compare life as We must live it in the world today with not only the gaiety but also the seriousness of the circus. Your life and the lives of those around you make up the Greatest and Most Important Show on Earth. Bob Curran Editor-in-Chief --4- ADMLIQISTRATIUN Hff A l I I , 1 1 x l F E s 2 i i l 5, 'x L. E F' ! 4 1 f 1 l 1 u I DR. J. CHESTER SWANSON Oklahoma City's Superintendent of Schools, Dr. J. Chester Swanson, is a highly honored man. He has received recognition in Who's Who 'in American Education 11951-525. Dr. Swanson has also received a local honor, an honorary L. L. D. given by Oklahoma City Univer- sity in recognition of his educational con- tributions both local and national. Children being his main interest, he endorses a child-centered program with a well-rounded curriculum which meets the individual differences of each child. Pertaining to public schools, Dr. Swan- son says: Our expanding school system and increasing en- rollment are definite signs of a growing city. The schools are responsible for the education of the children who are now listed on our census rolls and also obligated to the numerous children who will logically increase our present enrollment status. The progress of our community depends largely upon the vision and ability of its leaders to pro- vide educational facilities for children as well as economic development. Q An alert citizenry will agree that only by careful and sagacious planning can we provide adequate buildings for the future citizens of Oklahoma City and only by all of us working together can we interpret the impending school problems to the public. man or nnucmum We was Acting as members of the Board of Education are, fleft to rightj Mr. John C. This group meets at 7 :30 every school morning in order to prepare the various program that they present here at Classen as well as at other schools. Members of the choir feel that their time has been justified as being well spent. The student body has generally looked forward to each appearance of the group and hated to see their programs end. The A Capella choir manages to do more than just sing. They have social functions that include picnics, parties, and a banquet at the end of the year. -,hm ROW 1-Penny Walker, Mahala Larason, Elizabeth Higgenbotham, Anna Lee Stewart, Jane Sewell, Morrisalene Kessler, Helen Ruth ghafburn, Teresa Lillard, Linda Melton, Tommy Hibshman, George ou e. Accordingly, the juniors are important in our school life, although they have not attained the heights of the seniors. But next year C1assen's juniors will move into the spotlight and many important decisions will rest upon their opinions. These juniors are the future leaders of our school and We feel that they have the responsibility to take over the many tasks that await them, when next year, their turn comes to step into the center ring. --117- 4 BERKELEY ADAMS EVALYN ADAMS CLIFFORD ADKINS JUDY AINSWORTH W JUNIURS RICHARD AINSWORTH BOB ALBRECHT JAN ALLEN PHIL ANDERSON JEANNINE ANSILL JOYCE APPLETON PATTE JEAN ARNOLD ISLO ASHMORE JANETTE ATKINSON LAVITA AUER JACK BACHE JOHNNY BAKER KEITH BALLARD MARY BARBER JIM BARNETT DON BASS GERALDINE BAXTER ELLEN BENDORF ANN BENNETT WARREN BENNETT -TIM BELCHER BRUCE BELL JOHN BELT J. The water boy represents the beginning job at the circus, just as the sophomores are beginning their job at Classen. In the next two years the sophomores will advance, just as the water boy advances, and eventually will become the leaders of the school. During their first year the sophomores have made a fine record at Classen. They have participated actively in school organiza- tions. They have proven what a great role they play in our show and have shown that they are fully capable of taking the jobs that await them as juniors and seniors. -137- Mlss Retha Wave I-Iulet A L AX 'fa' A A R 5:17, .lv If -.,f . .iv DON AHBOT GEORGE ADAIR DANNY AKIN BILL ALEXANDER V 4 V' I X ,rd V. f I A.
