Constantly informed about the newest methods of the best schoolmen of modern times, our school executives have been ever ready to introduce needed re- forms in the city schools. A re- cent innovation in the teaching schedule is a correlation of the subjects, American history and American literature. The same group of students attends both classes, which are planned jointly by the two instructors. Many practical courses of great value, in view of current happenings are offered. Among them may be mentioned govern- ment, International Relations, social problems, and psychology. The faculty of Classen High School can truly be said to have as their ideal for guiding the students this proverb, Where there is no vision the people perish. T 1 4 l ' r ' Hwy 5. x1 'q Ur. ll. li. liruner has been superinten- ilent ol' schools in Oklahoma City since llllfi. llaxing an extensive knowledge of the problems of education and student- teacher relations, Ur. liruner is well qualified to direct the city school system. Being a man who is not easily satisfied with existing conditions, he is striving to eliminate the old taught with a hickory stick method of education and has in. stituted in its place a movement toward more student participation in class-room activities and in school government. Through the training received in self- government. the student is being pre- pared to meet the demands of the com- ing world government of universal peace. 1... K. The attendance at the Mixers is typical of the enthusiastic spirit displayed by Classenites in the participation in these extra- curricular functions. Little Theatre, the Orbit Class, Classen Life Staff, and the Language Department publications offer opportunities for pupils to demon- strate their talents in acting and in writing. The gayest of activities is, of course, Comet Capers, where the Comets gayly cavort in the vast expanses of the Gym. The spirit of co-operation and participation in enterprises of mutual benefit is one which must be preserved for the attainment of universal under- standing, peace and prosperity. The skyrocketing Comets were eclipsed only by Norman during the regular season, while Ardmore extinguished their hopes for another state championship in a quarter-final clash between Districts 3-A and 4-A. Classen started off with a hang, dumping Duncan in the Demon camp. The team returned home for a six game series at Taft stadium that they opened bv soundly thrashing Lawton 19-6. Next came the most crucial game of the season. Capitol Hill. In the rugged tussle the Classenites were tied by the Redskins 6-6, hut outfought them to gain a 2-1 penetration victory. 'Ihe Comets then took Northeast, but not too easily, as they had to come from behind to pull out a 13-6 decision. Central was ground into the Taft Stadium turf to the tune of 7-0 which pleased everybody, as it was the third straight year the event had had this ending. Tulsa-Webster was simply 'gatomizedi' 39-6. Another savage battle gave Oklahoma City fans their last look at this year's mighty eleven as they smashed a powerful Enid team 7-0. The Henryetta Hens, led by the superb All-State back, Clifford Van Meter, were barely subdued 13-12 at Henryetta, Even in defeat, Henryetta managed to deal Classen its most crippling blow of the season. Sam Bur- nell, mainspring of the Classen backfield, left the field with a broken arm. With reserve strength taking a large part, the Shaw- nee Wlolves were sent howling to their lair, 13-7, in the final game of the regular season at Shawnee. Wvith the winning of thal game, Classen snatched the District 3-A championship from Capitol Hill and earned a playoff berth at the same time. An op- portunity to play against the 1944 State Champions was a charce not lightly passed over by the teams Classen had scheduled and in every case save one, the Comets beat hack a team that M as playing its roughest, toughest game of the year. Along with the incessant pounding, Flu had taken its toll. The ailing Comets faced a sprightly crew from Ardmore, spotting them nineteen pounds to the man, in the line, only to realize that their physical condition had left them too impotent for the fiery Tigers who promptly clawed them 14-6. T ete , : kk ., A 5- 5 Within the lust few decades, as wars have become more prevalent, more deadly, more costly, the world has become acutely cognizant of the fact that its youth must be trained in such u manner as to be more mature in its understanding of the problems which face it than perhaps has any other generation in the history ol' man. It realizes that it can survive only if enough maturity and persuasive sell'-control are displayed to bridle the fundamental power and energy of the uni- verse. Not some of us, but all of us must he dedicated to the attainment ol' pence. Each organization is headed by officers elected from the membership of the respective club. In addition to training in leadership, the members are made to realize a responsibility to the ideals and standards of the group. Refusal or unwillingness to uphold these qualifica- tions means forfeiture of membership. Through these extra-curricular activities, as well as through class work, young people learn to accept responsi- bility and to cooperate with one another in mutual enter- prises. l t is the continuati in later life that will make for a better world. on of the practice of these qualities upromo Court The Supreme Court of Classen was organized in the autumn of 1945 for the purpose of avoiding, in the future. any disputes over the meaning of the Constitution. The Five Justices of the Supreme Court. appointed by the President and 4-onfirmed by the Stu- dent Council, were given the author- ity to settle such disputes. The powers of the Supreme Court were somewhat enlarged hy the new Constitution. adopted in March of 1946, which gave it the authority to hear any case ap- pealed from the Proctor Court.
