But with the good news come the lists of wounded, missing, prisoners of war, and dead. In this fourth year of World War II, we have iound it only fitting that this yearbook should be dedicated, as we are dedicated, to the memory of those who will not return, and in honor of those who will. It is our fervent hope that we have provided for them a fitting memorial, and for you, friend reader, a book which will always hold tender memories. So with this dedication, we present to them and to you . . . the Orbit for 1945. The strength and vigor of our nation is borne on the faith and expectancy that sing from the hearts of her young people. A breath of a song wings through these brief pages-a song filled with youthful ioyousness and faith in the pro- mises of the future. Let, then, our song be as full as are the hearts that inespire it. Let us realize that, No cares can ever o'er take us . . . as long as our spirits are tuned to a hope- ful key. Ever let us cling to that buoyancy which, itself, is the brave spirit of an America that can never die. CLASSES 'wmiff DR. H. B. 'lf Vice-Principal A familiar figure in Classen halls these many years is Mr Charles E. Grady. Duncan fell easily, as did Lawton. Capitol Hill put up a tough fight, but was finally beaten, and Northeast was smothered in the following game. The Central game ended in a 6-6 tie, but the Comets scored 2 pene- trations to the Card's l, eliminating them from the playoffs. Tulsa Web- ster was left far behind, Enid was finally nosed out despite a veri- table cloudburst, and N o r rn a n, crippled by the loss of lack Bum- garner and Bill Remy, was swamp- ed. Henryettct though highly rated at the first of thefseason, was a pushover. Then came the Shawnee Wolves, and the Comets, blown higher and higher by a series of phenomenal victories, came to earth with a truly sickening thud as the Wolves closed in for a l3-7 victory. Nevertheless, the Comets still represented district 313. in the state playoffs. The first ,game was with Ardmore, and the Comets rallied in the second half to swing them past the Mighty Mites, and against the Altus Bulldogs. The boys worked hard for that trophy and cheers went with the winning of it. So the '44-'45 football team adds one more honor to the many other honors received by Classen. Sue Cup in the airl some welcome! The cheerleaders did a bang up job of yell- ing this year and We'd like to give them a few Words of praise. They kept our pep up at the basketball and football games. Thanks: Sue, for the marvelous flips, Nicky, for your pep, Ioan, for that lovable personal- ity: and lean, for cheering against doctors orders. To the fellows, just thanks, Tom and Bob. ,. if ll ,,.t.,, - ,V .L , Coach Carroll Smelser 50 Zgazfef The Basketball season was rath- er disappointing to Classen this year but we had a great team and they played hard. They started the season with a victory of 32-9 over Van Buren, Arkansas, but Ardmore was a defeat in both games with that school. The life-long rival, 'K as 'M GQCQQ QQ? aqgfgx Central, walked over the team in to the first game but we walked right back in the second with a score of 27 to their 24. They won over Enid and Capitol Hill, but Shawnee set them back in both games. They de- feated Tulsa Central in the second game but she won over them in the first. Norman was a victory when the team played on the home court, but the Tigers defeated us when we played there. Northeast was easy bait both games and the fellows won over Tulsa Will Rog- ers when they played at T town. Coach Smelser did a swell job of coaching the basketball team this season. Between pack- ing to go to the army and unpacking when he didn't go-I don't see how he had time to do all he did for the boys. He had some swell mate- rial to work with though, and the fellows really hustled. Thanks, coach, even if the season wasn't our best. We still know we had a swell team.
