Text from Pages 1 - 126 of the 1944 volume:

Have you looked into the future? Have you seen what I behold? Opportunities tor greatness That our way of life enfolds. We've need of men to rule our nation And kings of industries: ' Engineers and contractors And ships forpeacetul seas. There are novels still unwritten Many songs have not been sung: Famous artists-undiscovered: Future greatness is yet young! -Margaret Murray wx! WUT Q A CLASSEN HIGH SCHCO-L OKLAHOMA CITY J T 1 1 1 1 1 1 lnlaorfunifg kr reafneaa The Orbit staff this year presents as its theme Opportunity for Greatness because it believes that the coming years offer that opportunity as no other time in the history of the world has ever offered it. This is our chance-most of us will not obtain fame, for one can only become famous when many nameless men support him: but all Will have the opportunity to be great. We are aware that many of the days which lie ahead will be filled with sorrows and painq but in these very circumstances We will find our opportunity. Not the nature of the event but the use made of the experience determines the end. What happens to a man is not so important as what he does With what happens to him. These are the things We must learn. It has been said that great ships require deep Water. We have before us an ocean in which We can prove ourselves to be strong or Weak. This is a challenge to us. We must build our ships to stand the highest Waves. We must prove that we can be great. cosiisis Administration gacuay .lelaarfmenfd Activities Queend gxfra -curricufar Sports aw gm lkganizations ,Zia b 1 meparfmenfa! Bruner has already con- tributed much to the community which has welcomed him as its superintendent of schools. A stu- dent of social and economic prob- lems and their relationship to edu- cation, he is vice-president of the National Kindergarten Association as well as an officer in the National Society for Curriculum Study. For the last ten years he has been Cur- riculum Consultant for Ft. Worth, Houston, the Board of Education of South Dakota, and different cities in Maryland including Baltimore. This is not the first time he has had a chance to become acquaint- ed with our state. He is a native of Missouri and was head of the schools at Okmulgee. ln l924 he left Oklahoma to teach at Columbia where he received his Ph.D. de- gree. Dr. Bruner's theory for teaching lies in this statement: My aim of education is to assist each individ- ual in becoming increasingly self- directiveiintellectually, efficiently and happily self-directive--in en- terprises of value to himself and to others. H, B, BRUNER The Gklahoma City School Board is composed of a group of promi- nent business men Who are responsible for making the rules and regula- N' L, GEORGE tions which govern the city schools. H. Taylor. Having served in the same capacity at Harding and Webster junior highs in previous years, Mr. Taylor was well fitted for the difficult task to which he was assigned. A sense of fairness toward the teachers and stu- dents alike has played an important part in making our principal popular. He hasbeen willing to give much of his time to making everyone satisfied, a hard job for a new man. He has taken a keen interest in our organizations and can be seen at any of the school's activities-either playing volley ball at Teen Town or intently concentrat- ing on a stage production. The students like to deal with Mr. Taylor because he likes to deal with them. W. H. TAYLOR Principal THI YEAIFS D0 BLE HEADER C. E. GHADY Vice-Principal Probably the only man who ever said that he wished he could pay more taxes is Mr. C. E. Grady. Affectionately known as Pop our new vice-principal has been teaching school for forty three years. During twenty of those years he has occupied room ll9 teaching American history and debate. Of the five years he has had a debate team, three have brought him victory in the National Debate Tournament and the only reason he didn't win this year is because there was no tournament. Richly deserving the honor of his new position, Mr Grady says he would rather teach history than anything in the world but that he enjoys his new job as vice-principal immensely Nobody could be around Classen very long without hearing of Pop Grady. He's one of those human dynamos who vigorous ly expresses himself on any ideal in which he believes as any of his debaters or previous history students can testify His enthusi asm on the question of proper diet and good living accounts for the fact that he taught forty-two of those years without missing a single day because of sickness. These boys, each an artist on his instrument, have given much of their extra time to practicing with the group in order to make their band really good. This organization is typical of all the other activities because in each case it is the leaders who participate in them. There are not just a few leaders at Classen but many who take part in the extra-curricular activities. Selling and buying war starnps, helping as hospital aids, learning to fly, being a member ot teen town, attending the mixers-all these require persons who will take the initiative. Participation in school pro- ductions and on the staffs ot publications teach the students to be active in his community. Leadership is achieved through participation, by following the examples of others. The leaders ot the school are the most active but they are the ones who always seem to have time to do a little more. They are school-spirited and eager to help in putting over new ideas, and they can also stick up for their views. Taking honors in their stride, always knowing their place, our high school leaders go on to real greatness. 0RBIT QUEEN Weofa Wgamd HELL HOUND SWEETHEART June l0I'll'l2fAy J. , ,,,. During one month, SSl5,U56.65 of stamps and bonds were sold here. lane Richley, Shirley Brasil, and Lois Sudderth come smilinqly to the aid of our work-worn nurses. The uniforms are of green with white blouses. There are many other girls here at Classen who also do this helpful job at the various hospitals after school hours. Flying a real plane each Sunday afternoon has made Mary lane Buzbee interested in the models too. As a member of the Civil Air Patrol, she with several Classen students is learning to fly so that she may be prepared for the days after graduation. ludy Maguire works diligently on her editorial and Margaret Benton stands by, Waiting for her chance at the typewriter. The girl with the amused look.on her face is Ruth Bradley, checking mis- takes. Due to the shortages caused by the war, the Life staff has not had the possibilities the ones in previous years have had. But this has not stopped them in the least. They have Worked faithfully throughout the year. One of the special editions they printed this year was the April Fool paper called the Classy Lie. lt was printed on different colored paper and it announced the April Fool King. With Grace Ward acting as editor, it spent many hours of hard work taking pictures, drawing, and past- ing. The staff was ably assisted by Miss Lottie Conlan and Mrs. Virginia Chappelear. Having finished, all they need now is a few shoe cou- pons to make up for the leather worn down by trudging through the halls seeking bits of in- formation. The staff feels that its book should be some- thing that the students will want, not only for the present, to get their friends' autographs, and to see their pictures, but for the future, too, when they get to the point where they want to look back and remember these days. Mixer Bigger and better mixers, was the promise of loe Mor- ledge in his campaign for president of the student body last year. Unlike most politicians, loe has kept his word and as a result, Classen is known all over the state as the school hav- ing the best mixers. Winners of the jitterbug contest, Kay Wolf and lack Tur- ley, upper right, look like they are ready for more, but who wouldn't be with the music of the Sooners, lower right, to dance to? All dressed up for the kid mixer, with their teddy bears to boot, are lohnny Spaan, Sara McArthur, limmie Crotts, Sue Breeding, and Bob Douglas, center. The marriage bureau, lower left, was one of the most popular parts of the Valentine Mixer sponsored by the Comes. loyce Hoyte has her turn as the line forms to the right. CAGER PL CE 2 D IN INTRA-CITY C0 FERE CE The smile oi destiny played only half-heartedly on the Comet cagers during the l943'44 season. Unbeatable at times and quite vulnerable at others the Comets rose to the heights and fell to the depths but came out with third place in the Mid-State Conference and second place in the lntra-City race. Under the direction of Coach Carroll Smelser the Comets Won a total of eighteen games and lost nine. The.team defeated their old rivals, Central Cardinals, Northeast and Tulsa Central, each twice.in their highlights of the season. Their most disappointing loss was to Capitol Hill in the regional tournament. Twelve men were recommended at the end of the year for letters. These twelve included six seniors: limmy Elder, Bill lewell, Gene McKenna, Buddy l-larry, Bill Cloud and Bob Morgan, six juniors: Gene lones, Bill Davis, joe Pitts, Bob Porter, Tommy Stephens, and Gerald Lovell. Besides the junior lettermen, four promising juniors, Sam Bur- nell, lim Owens, Gene Ogden, and Raymond Yager, Will return for the 1944-45 season. At the close ol the season the Comets placed Buddy Harry, right 1551, and Gene McKenna, above, on the All-City second team. Also Mc- Kenna was placed an the All-Mid State Conference first team and on the North All-State team, GAMES WON CLASSEN 31 Edmond Central 35 Foster 35 St. Gregory 35 Edmond High 41 Tulsa Central 28 Norman 25 Northeast 35 Enid 30 Ardmore 25 Central 35 Northeast 31 Ardmore 43 Tulsa Central 22 Central 38 lohn Carroll 38 Enid Z9 Edmond Central OPPONENTS 19 29 6 ll 27 26 18 26 18 17 24 26 3B 19 28 26 23 GAMES LOST CLASSEN 19 Putnam City 23 Tulsa Will Rogers 20 Capitol Hill 25 Putnam City 26 Shawnee 29 Capitol Hill 29 Shawnee 20 Norman OPPONENTS 21 28 39 26 27 52 34 40 Bill Iewell, pictured at right, who played lorward with the Comet Caqers until he donned the blues oi the United States Navy. The team took first place in the All-City tussle and landed in third place in the Mid-State Conference. Four boys, Carl Stephens, Bill Taylor, Charles Shaw, and Gerald Lovell made berths on the All-City eleven. Weatherford, Northeast, Central, Pauls Valley, Tulsa Central, and Shawnee were all easy prey to the powerful Comet eleven. However, Enid and Norman proved a little too much for them. Capitol Hill was the upset of the season, tying the team to a U-O deadlock. On their first encounter the Comets defeated Weatherford l9-O. The team felt a little cocky about their victory over Weatherford, so Capitol Hill journeyed to Taft gridiron and put the skids under the haughty Comets squad and held us to our only deadlock, O-O. At the following game Classenites saw Northeast pulverized 43-U. The next week Classen out-ran, out-kicked, and out-passed their traditional rivals on Robin- son. The final score was 27-6, Central being the only team to score on the Comets up to this point. Pauls Valley followed, who bowed to the Comets 27-O. With three games left in season, Classen hit a losing streak-losing the first two and only two to Mid-State competition. Enid had an ace in the hole and pulled up with a 6-O score. While Bill Remy and team of the Norman Tigers' fame handed the Comets their second loss a week later. The last game saw Classen travel to Shawnee and stop the Wolves l3-6. Co- operation, working together for the good of something larger than the individual, can bestow upon one such a measure of greatness that it will eclipse his desire for fame. In taking on :responsibility We learn to understand why every great human achievement has been the work not only of famous men but of great but nameless ones who supported them. Winston Churchill has said The price of greatness is respon- sibility. This is not an exorbitant fee, nor does it require any great sacrifice because a person can have no greater satisfaction than the knowledge that he has done his part of the task to the best of his ability. No organization could function if its members did not take an interested part in its activities. This is the firststep toward the ultimate goal of faithful service. The honor of leadership comes only after one has proven himself worthy by first giving of his time and effort Whenever he is called upon. Only through service do men become leaders. lt has been truly said that he who can- not follow cannot lead. STUDE TCOU CIL The most important project of the Classen Student Council this year was the promotion ot the sale of War Stamps and Bonds. The council, representinq the student body, has as its purpose, the betterment of school welfare. 13 The heated Wednesday discussions were interspersed with the humor oi Ioe Morledqe, president, until he joined up in Uncle Sam's Navy, leavinq the leadership ot the Council to the vice- president, Alton Brown. L ote To An Undergraduate You're sitting there, watching that long, slow line of caps and gowns. I know what you're thinking, for l've watched that procession go by twice. As each diploma was handed out, a feeling of bewilderment came over me. It seemed impossible that during the next year the school would not be in a complete muddle- that was my thought as each of the school lead- ers passed through that line. But the next class always carried ony and now, as seniors, we're leaving, and it's up to you. -AN NA IEAN GRAY. Zin ilillemurium CI-IRIST'S RESIDENCE-64 A. D. ' I strode down cazfrnous corridors. I Passed tbe dismal dens of dead. I peered into tbe ancient vaults. And muncbed my moldy crumbs of bread. My life was o'er tbe danger dire. Hence to tbe catacombe I fled. From Nero's cruel and bloody reign, From conflagration overbead. My only Place of sanctitude Was wbere tbe Romans feared to tread .' Tbey burnt Tbe Book and tortured me, I bad no bome, no batb, no bed, I bad naugbt but misfortune left To fall upon my luckless bead. Ob, Pity all tbe Cbristians tbere- For God we lived-we died and bled. - By WENDELL A.
