Wrinkle heading the Oklahoma City' school system wisely and efficiently in his office as Superintendent of Schools. The red-haired dynamo brought many revolutionary changes when he came which have helped to make the city schools more modern in scope and administration. He obtained experience in his field during eight years as Superintendent of the Battles- ville public school system. The genial Mr. Wrinkle has two daughters now enrolled at Classen who are outstanding in many activitiesi Charlotte, who will graduate this spring, is a member of Honor Math, Honor Society, orchestra, Comes, and Courtesy Club. LaVeta came to Classen this year from Taft junior high and Gerry, the oldest daughter, graduated last year with many honors and activities to her credit. , amhmefqschdeam ' Responsible for making the rules and regulations for the city schools and choosing the many hundreds of mem- bers of the staff operating in the city school system are a group of prominent Oklahoma City businessmen who serve as the school board. Another unclaimed mascot arrived December 7. l-le's Iohn Christopher, the latest of the Sturm clan. Being one of the youngest highschool principals in the nation, Mr. Sturm came to Classen this year after five years at Harding. Before that he taught journalism here, sponsoring the Orbit and Classen Life, besides coaching the B football squad and sponsoring the Blue Iackets. Crashing precedent when he thought the old methods could be improved, N112 Sturm has brought about many new customs that have won the whole-hearted approval of the student body. lfleii: lpriiicipcils flare iwelcoifif-zeal This Year Wm- Conscientious in all his decisions is the perfect description of lvlr. Gilbert L. Robinson who came to Classen last fall to serve as vice-principal. The news of his appointment brought considerable pleasure to the many students who had worked under lX4r. Robinson before at Taft junior high, for they all knew his capacities for being just and considerate in his duties of handling the problems of attendance and attitude at Classen. N112 Robinsons family consists of a son, Bob, who is in the ninth grade at Taft, and a daughter, Katherine Ann, in the fifth grade at Linwood grade school. I He has run the gamut of educational positions beginning by teaching history at VVaurika, then was principal of the elementary and junior high- school at Dundee, Olcla., and later was Superintendent of Schools at Paden, Oltla. After being transferred to Qltlahoma City, Mi'. Robinson taught at Harding junior high for three years and taught social studies in addition to his administrative duties during his four years at Taft. ,wh X l' 1 F . ,ff f ...ff MRS. I. R. The encouragement and advice given during these adolescent years have often been the deciding factor between mediocrity and outstanding achievement in later years. The Classen faculty has endeavored to change its study material to meet the present-day need and many new classes have been formed to aid this effort. Many teachers have had to take extra hours in advanced study to Properly Prepare themselves to teach new war-time courses. We, the students of Classen, are sincerely grateful for the time they have sacrificed and wish to express our appreciation for this interest in our welfare. We will carry the benefits accrued with us for many years to come. MR. CARROLL SMELSER S I Q AN PITTM KLEY MR. OA RD PICKA LEUA MISS UL . In PA CHE BLAN NSON STEVE NA B. MRS. ED MEN R. Typical of the English Department is the picture at the upper right in which George Kann, seniorg lean Put- nam, sophomoreg and Ioan Irwin, jun- ior. are absorbed in the works of the many immortal writers represented in their respective textbooks on English literature, Shakespeare, and American literature. A very special guest of the History Department was Dr. Lorna Langmore in the center right who lives in Cape- town, South Africa where her parents have a hospital. She came to- the United States to take a chiropractor's course, and stopped off at Classen to relate to lvliss Blanche Paulys history class some of the incidents she has ex- perienced on the Dark Continent, which she is describing to Virginia Ann Cobb and Loretta Swirczynski. 'S no Enthusiasts of the Math Depart- ment constructed a giant slide rule to operate on a blackboard to enable the whole room to study the same problem at once. At the left Virginia Brashear discusses the use of the slide rule while Fred Ray and Ioy Gleason verify the results from their books, Wim Precision in tone and timing are the secret of Mr. Chester Francis's success as director of the A Cappella choir and head of the Vocal Music Department. At the upper left he drills mem- bers of one of the girls' glee clubs. A special class in camouflage art was a new ad- dition this year to the Art Department of bene- fit to those who desire to specialize in that divi- sion of government service. J M27 Chemistry is becoming one of the most valuable subjects in the Science Department as this deadly war depends so very much on scientific improvements by each nation. Thernl Martin turns complete concentra- tion to an experiment at the upper right, for she realizes more fully now than ever before how useful the knowl- edge will be in the years to come as the world develops to :in even fuller extent in this respect. bliss Lelin Picknrcl instructs her class in French military conversation in the different parts of im airplane, naming each part in French. Although they lost the game, they were at their height in playing ability. ln the two games with Central, Classen made an even break. The first game was won by the Comets by a score of 32-26. But in the second game Central made a quick recovery during an overtime to win by one basket. The Comet season was sprinkled with close games, such as the last Classen-Central game, the two Norman games, the first Shawnee game and the last game with Northeast. Next year Classen will welcome back five lettermen. The seasonis first game was the nonofficial Preview between the six city highschools. Classen drew games with Central' and Britton playing one quarter with each. Both ended in scoreless ties, which proved to be an agcurate forecast of what to expect from the rest of the games. Another o-o tie was the outcome of the first official game for a green Comet eleven with Reagan highschool from Houston, Texas, which has always been strong op- ponent. The next week, October 1, the boys from the Boule- vard journeyed to Capitol Hill and made a good showing Bob Thacker, above, battled his way to the 1942 calntaincy with plenty of brains controlling his brawn. Old Mari lvlisfortune rode on the Comets' tails for the next two games, letting Hollis win by a score of 25-I4 and then Enid make a killing of zo-o. Enid's lim Keaton and his Passing crew were respon sible for the latter nosedive by Classen. A temporary rally allowed the Boulevard boys to eke out a 6-0 victory at Norman the next week. But the last two games of the season should mercifully be buried far away from the light. First Clas sen entrained to Tulsa and came back with nothing but the ride and a score of 6 to Tulsa's 32.
