Department Zf 2 ln the circle are the members of girls' quartet: back row, left to right, Ramarion Walde, Pauline Todd, Mary Lee Thomas, and in front, Iune Black. In the other picture, left to right, are the orchestra's number one virtuoso Connie Archer, her shadow, and her violin. Classen is proud to have a music department which has won much national renown. The band and orchestra, under the able direction of Oakley Pittman, have taken first place in the state instrumental music contest for three consecutive years. The vocal music department, coached by Chester Franc1s,has retained the title of state champion for three years. Classen's orchestra and A Cappella choir distinguished themselves by being the only Oklahoma City organizations to appear on the nation-wide NBC American Youth broadcast. The music department received a letter from the Radio Corporation of New York City saying that the finest of their recordings of highschool music groups was the one of the Classen broadcast. The students enrolled in music courses learn to know and love fine music as well as to make it, for that is the part music will play in the later lives of most students. lt is the purpose of the music department to give each of its stu- dents an intimate acquaintance with and love of beautiful music, so that, though they never become orchestra leaders or opera stars, music will add happiness to their lives. OAKLEY PITTMAN: B. S. from Okla. A. 61 M., private student of George Rowe, Cleveland Symphony, Bernet Tuthill Ensemble: CHESTER FRANCIS: B. A. and B. S. from Phillips U., M. A. from Northwestern, graduate work at Kan. State.
