In the other picture, left to right, are the orchestra's number one virtuoso Connie Archer, her shadow, and her violin. Classen is proud to have a music department which has won much national renown. The band and orchestra, under the able direction of Oakley Pittman, have taken first place in the state instrumental music contest for three consecutive years. The vocal music department, coached by Chester Franc1s,has retained the title of state champion for three years. Classen's orchestra and A Cappella choir distinguished themselves by being the only Oklahoma City organizations to appear on the nation-wide NBC American Youth broadcast. The music department received a letter from the Radio Corporation of New York City saying that the finest of their recordings of highschool music groups was the one of the Classen broadcast. The students enrolled in music courses learn to know and love fine music as well as to make it, for that is the part music will play in the later lives of most students. lt is the purpose of the music department to give each of its stu- dents an intimate acquaintance with and love of beautiful music, so that, though they never become orchestra leaders or opera stars, music will add happiness to their lives. Since it is used extensively for commercial means, art is no longer considered an impractical frill, and art education takes its place along with other vocational courses. Art courses today offer training in fashion design, figure drawing, inter- ior decoration, crafts, and commercial design, as well as painting. All types of art work, especially crafts, may become a pleasant and useful hobby. Art education is also an important factor in raising the general standards of taste, for it stimulates a desire for the finer and more beautiful things of life, and teaches the student to appreciate art and beauty wherever it is found, thus increasing his enjoyment of life. The industrial arts course is planned to give the student a general basic education rather than a delin- ite vocational training. However the course has a specific value for it teaches the student to appreciate a good job, so that he will be satisfied only with the best. The student learns engineering drawing as it is used in the industrial world by engineers and de- signers, and as the language in which are expressed and recorded the ideas and information necessarv for the building of machines and structures. They 'learn to give exact and positive information regarding every detail of the machine or structure existing in his imagination. The shop course enriches the intellect and at the same time allows the student to see in his finished project the definite results of logical, careful and persistent planning and thinking. The satisfaction of work well done is one of the greatest rewards exf pericnced by the students. Another objective is to assist in better choice and use of industrial products and service. Captain Ben Stout, all state guard, was a prominent figure in all games. Coach Higbie stated, Ben is by far the finest leader and one of the outstand- ing players of the state. He completed the final pass to Eddie Blalock, all city end and next year's captain, to snatch a decisive win from the Central Cardinals, Classen's most enthusiastic rival. Other outstanding players were Vaughn Shirley, all city, mid-state, and all state tackle, and Paul Lovell, who scored the greatest number of touchdowns. Probably the greatest loss to the team was the death of Coach l-ligbie's father, because he was well lilced by the team members and all who knew him. Student managers, who were in charge of equipment and assistants to the coach, were Fritz Larwig and Howard Rasltin. ff .r ,Y e.,..w. emszwz f 1' . il .,?5u- ' -' - r my ix aua7!icZauu zwfbqada ...0na0-0 743 .Sree ' 'gp' 'Figs i l. i. -i 'PII GH l940 CHE ,ll LE, Rc-auliug across lwotlm pages arc tackles, Vauglm Shirley, Inmcs Black, Ed Trout, Glen lXlcKin- lcv, llolm Kcllv, XV1:n4lc'll liruoln nncl Paola Osborn, nucl tlmc quarals. lack Allyn, Robert Allen, lirecl Smmllcy, Vcruc XVooclx, loc lflxlffll, Charles IVIcDounld and Rolwcrr Sclunidt.
