Wallace has influenced almost every stu- dent in Classen. He sports a fancy Ph. D. cleqree, but you can't keep this doctor away with an apple a day. iii C. K. Reitf, superintendent of the Oklahoma City public schools, completes his ninth year this sprinq in that position. He heads one of the most progressive as well as the larqest educational systems in the state. He is a popular and welcome speaker at Classen assem- blies. My A- ww ,aww of 7fne Wad e s.,4ze,.. To the faculty the graduate owes a debt of his most sincere gratitude. For, whether or not he realizes it, his highschool instructors have played a most im- portant part in the strengthening of his character, the moulding of his attitudes, and the promotion of his ideals. They helped him through the uncertain, wavering, yet vital process of growing up. The flourishing or the fading, though the task of the individual, is indirect ly due to the influence of his teachers. They believe and employ the principles of democracy, and we, believing, practice them ourselves. As capable mentors, as considerate disciplinarians, as sympathetic advisors, as genuine friends, we feel that no group could surpass the members of the Classen faculty. mf, ,uw mmm Mrs. Helen Nance Bean wins the cup for having been here the longest. She's worked as Classen registrar for 9 years, and people are beginning to call her fixture . Before then she went to school here. Her duties are to file scholar ships and awards from Classen, keep the record of everyone in school, send transcripts to other schools and universities distribute new pupils' progress folders, and keep permanent active, inactive, and graduate files Mrs. Mavanee Iohnson has been Mr. Bakers secretary for four years. As a sample of her intelligence, we offer the fact that although she schooled at Central, she came to Classen to work. Not ALL Centralites are stupid, we reckon. She has to remind Brother Baker about his appointments, handle his correspondence, act as teachers' nursemaid, meet parents and outsiders which come to the office, select and assign duties to office assistants, handle special reports, bulletins, and requisitions, check orders, and keep fresh flowers on her desk. Miss Isalona Carter has been attendance clerk here for three years and attended school here also. All she has to do is grow gray checking attendance, call mothers of truant Comets, refuse all bribes, and keep being a good old gal. Elo Beth Todd, leanne Collins, and Betty lane Swanson sort at- tendance cards preparatory to compiling the absenteelist. Student assis- tants of Mrs. lohnson, Miss Carter, Mr, Wallace, and Mrs. Bean include Lillian Graves, Betty Iayne Patterson, Beulah Mae Trout, Ela Beth Todd, Betty Bob Angerman, Betty lane Swanson, Mariorie Kerfoot, Virginia Massad, Betty Lou Boberts, Betty Boss, Imogene Kraus, Betty Ann Gilbert, leanne Collins, Frances Gooch, Edna Mae Iohnson, Betty Lou Showalter, Lorraine King, ljileen Abbott, Ann Orr, loan Harmon, Mattie Fred Stan- ford, Doris Boesler, Margaret Hicks, Christine Roark, ldagene Irby, Bon- ita Hurt, leanne Beardstey, Bob Benshaw, and Paul Fondren. Registrar Helen Bean and com- pany have YOUB number-they know more about you than your mother, your horoscopist, and I, Edgar Hoover fand what's more, they won't accept hushumoney, Miss Isalona Carter and Mrs. Mavanee lohnson are the two chief office moguls -'theirs is the blame for your name being on the black list - iust because you didn't have your math and the north-door proctor wasn't looking, Sf FF. Coach Leo Higbie made the first touchdown that was ever scored by Classen against its proverbial rival, Central. After finishing O.C.U., he returned to teach young Classenites strategy to accomplish the same thing. ln the last two years, our gridsters have lost only five games, three of them this year. Of the '39-'40 team, three rated all-city selection, lack Marquette, Ben Stout, and Emile Meyer, and two, Lee Cook and Marquette, were chosen for all-state. Co- Captain lack Marquette, mid-year grad, who was snapped below in the last stages of the Classen-Cen- tral epic, is now attending classes at Southern Cali- fornia. Paul East, likewise co-captain, plans to check his bags at A. ci M. next fall. Incidentally, the last two years are the only two in Comet grid history that we've downed Capitol Hill. We took second in cit , , standing, and third in mid-state classification. Y Coach Leo Hlgble 1939 -40 S , GAMES PLAYED: 10. WON: 7. LOST: 3. M756 FOOTBALL QUEEN Dah' .-Slpafzh Girls' sports, despite the lack of publicity and backing by the student body, have attained no small bit of promi- nence in the city muscle world. Coached by Miss Betha Wave Hulet and Miss Gertrude Iones, these female athletes have won first honors in cityrwide hockey and swimming meets, and took second in volley ball. Although no tennis or baseball scores are chalked up as yet this spring, we produce a strong team every year. Besides these sports, archery, ping pong, badminton, shuffleboard, tennaquoits, and ballroom, tap, and eurythmics receive their share of the sport spotlight. Several girls have achieved distinction not only for their outstanding athletic performances, but in that they have been enrolled in sports since their arrival at Classen. These include Leona Schritter, Buth Baxter, Eileen Lovin, Evalyn Huffman, Dorothy South, Iune Blake, lane Blake, FGQQY Cozatt, Betty Grimmett, Naomi Henricks, Lillian Graves, lean Porter, Leota Woodmansee, Delores Standiford, Marcia Tucker, Iimmie Brackeen, Margaret Burton, Barbara Blanch- ard, Mary Lee Thomas, Gloria Howe, Pam Watts, Mary Louise Carter, Gladys Peebles, Kathryn Maxson, and Hope Berlin. The girls' sports department has suffered two major losses this year. First, Leota Woodmansee, five-letter der- vish who aced in aqua-feats, especially diving, left Classen in February to study with Philip Patterson, A. A. U. diving coach in California. Leota, holder of several champships, has won the Pacific Coast Diving Championship since her departure. Then Hope Berlin, who earned volley ball, hockey, and baseball letters during her three-year stay here, died Monday, March 25, l94O. Her pall bearers were six girl athletes. Pictured below are coaches Retha Wave Hulet and Gertrude lones, who are fagged from trying to keep up with their speedy students. Miss Iones teaches dancing and swimming, and Miss Hulet manages all other sports. Bight exponents of the eurythmics class are, beginning with the shut-eyed one in the lower left corner, and reading clockwise, Lillian Yowell, Bobbie Ann Ioseph, Helen Hogg, Marion Wheeler, Viola Mehr, Lee lla White, Betty Faye Dirickson, and Helen Iane Laughlin. Members of the qirls' swimminq team and representatives of the entire qroup are Mary Lee Thomas, Gloria Howe, Captain Mary Louise Carter, Rosie Kneeland, Anne Feild, Gladys Peebles, and Evalyn Huffman. Lillian Graves, also on the team, was out when the picture was taken because of an appendectomy. Leota Woodmansee, before her removal to California, was a tearnster. All girls except Kneeland and Feild lettered. Ace Archer Ierry Nelson aims a rnissle heavenward. Ierry has snaqaed sev- eral target-ticking titles, as have sister Lorene Nelson and Shirley Ann Akers. The city title was wrested by the Comets from the Cards' clutches, where it had been for three years pre- vious. All nine Comet cagers, including Don Spence, who is a Ccensoredl for not having his picture made, own at least one letter, and Harreld Kelley, captain, has eight. All but three, Mitchell, McCutcheon, and Pugsley, intend to graduate, and Manager Ben Burke will still be around next year. According to Coach Skimmer Miller, who's pictured at the right with Little Skimmer, alias 3-year-old Phillip Tommy, the squad has won 15 and lost ll of the total games played. ln the shot below, caught at the Classen'Central cage wrestle, Summers is pro- tecting the leather spheroid from an overonxious Card. Inciden- tally, Summers is the shortest player in the Comet squad. Bill Moylan, junior who attended Classen off and on throughout the year, was tallest, but Bashful Don Spence holds that title now. t Ha if! Seniors were entertained with a Prom by the Iunior Class April 18. Music was supplied by the Varsity Club orchestra, and the Spring- lake Casino floor was the setting. Baccalaureate exercises were held in the Classen auditorium with Dr. Paul S. Wright, father of Lauretta Wright, graduating senior, officiating on Sunday morning, May l9. The senior breakfast was held gradua- tion morning, Tuesday, May 21. Then that evening all seniors donned the traditional cap and gown and walked the last half- mile across the Municipal Auditorium stage to receive their diplomas. ,wa QRAWWMQ XVQO Each year the graduating class leaves a gift for the school.
