J Dedicafion To the members of the senior class, the pioneers of tomorrow, we dedicate the I939 Orbit. We commend you for your past achievements and challenge you with new worlds to conquer. Preface This year, Oklahomais Golden Anniversary, marks a date for paying tribute to the progress that our state has made during the past fifty years. From the rough, un- settled, frontier country that Oklahoma Territory was in 1889 it has changed into a pro- gressive agricultural and industrial state which boasts of towering buildings, thriving in- dustries, advanced professions, extensive transportation facilities, and educational centers. The past fifty years have been mainly devoted to developing basic institutions which are the fundamentals of progress. Today the essentials of advancement are set up and are ready for this generation to begin the second era of decided progress. In addition to professions, highly specialized, and governmental positions, there are 655 industries in Oklahoma, each offering wide vocational possibilities to the citizens of tomorrow. The modern trend of business is to expand, to advance, and to employ new talent, this should create more positions and opportunities for the high school graduate. The Orbit staff of 1939, in eulogizing the progress Oklahomans have made in the past, has chosen to point out some of the advanced institutions in the state with reference to the high school graduate and his place in the progress of tomorrow. In many of the vocations which Oklahoma offers to its citizens, the high school graduate is already trained and equipped, for other more specialized occupations, Oklahoma has established schools in which students may study and prepare. With the detail work almost completed and with today's eager generation well prepared, there should indeed be a triumphant, sweeping march of progress during the next fifty years. Ed Betty Pickren and Boss Rabom have waltzed the old sheet through another stanza successfully. Although the motto l'd die for the dear old Classen Life hasn't yet been practiced, some almost did by special request when their columns didn't show up on time. But Momma Moore has kept the brood in line, and they're looking for new worlds to canker next year. Distribution is where Business Manager Betty Louise Fullen, head of the Here's Your Classen Life brigade, docs her noble duty. SEN LIFE if G 725 is where Martha Lou The Desk Miller, Miss zona Moore, sponsor, Ann McQuown, Virginia Waiver, David Sureck, and Patty Roberts mingle in a jaw session. Weight 0 Speed 0 Experience With a veteran line and backrield, the gridiron machine had a successful season, winning eight out of the ten games they played. Boasting the weight and speed of such men as Dick Palmer, Paul East, Ash Norris, Bill Bagwell, Chester Robertson, and Dick Wilson in the line, and such experience and speed in the backfield as Sam Maupin, Emile Meyer, Ioe Pounder, and lack Marquette, the Comets easily beat the freshmen from Southwestern Teachers, College by a score of 17-o. The Lawton fray was next, with the Comets going down in the last quarter on a hide-out play. The final score stood Lawton 7, Clssen 6. The Amarillo game was a different story. Bill Bagwellis converting beat the Sandies for the first time on their own Held. This score was 7-6 also, but the Comets were on the winning side. Tulsa fell next by a 20-o score, and the Shooting Stars were all set for the big fray with Central. Things looked Fine at the half, with Classen leading by one slim point, but Marquette's punt was blocked in the third quarter and the final score was 13-7 in favor of the Cards. The Comets came back with a revengeful air the next three games and trounced Blackwell, El Reno, and Chickasha by 33-0, 57-o, and 49-6 respectively. Shawnee was next to fall before the Comets, George Gibbons making his only score of the season by converting the winning point that placed the final score at 20-19. The gridsters wound up the season by defeating the Redskins of Capitol Hill by a 7-0 score. This was the first time in nine years that the Comets were able to win over Capitol Hill. With such a powerful team Classen placed several players on the all-city and all-state teams. Captain Ioe Pounder and Dick Palmer made both of these honor teams, while Chester Robertson, Al Scanland, and Bill Bagwell placed on the all-city. Lee Cook and lack Marquette received honorable mention. All those pictured above are lettermen except Witzel, Culbertson, Anderson, Mix, Bushey, and Iohnson. Lee Cook was elected captain and proved himself worthy of his team-mates by pole-vaulting I2 feet 4 inches, just 2 inches short of the state record. The relay teams were the outstanding factions on this year's team. Gene Reynolds, Lee Cook, Law- rence Hayes, Lawrence I-lolmboe, and Bill Mclntyre were thc contributing cinderrnen. Theodore Roberts placed second in the mile run at the state meet. :sk 'NK lv Q' 'Q 6 ,' iii SPC RTS l-larassed' all year by hard luck, Coach Earl Coffey's tennis team still managed to get their share of honors on the state courts. Carl Mitchell, number one man, was troubled with an injured side at the state meet, but managed to get into the Hnals where he lost in straight sets. However, both doubles teams reached the finals and Bill Mc- Murry and Carl Mitchell won from lack Griggs and Paul Darrough. Bill was in bed for the first of the season and so Classen suffered in the various dual meets. However, with one senior and such outstanding underclassmen as Walter lvioore, Stanley Draper, Paul Darrough, and Iack Griggs, the prospects look more than bright for next year. Paced by Captain Iimmie Sales, the Comet tankmen had a suc- cessful year, placing third in the state by virtue of a one-point loss to Central. The Comets were weakened at mid-semester by the loss of Albert Exendine and Paul Droege, but men like Earl Iames, Kenneth Morgan, Ieff Donalson, B. Turner, and Earl Horton proved them- selves capable of carrying the load. Hit hard by graduation, the pros- pects for next year are not particularly bright, but Earl Iames, Fred Lyon, Kenneth Morgan, Bob Coffey, and Scott Kile will be the nu- cleus. -30 Ji l Girls' Swlmmln Team LEFT To RMT 9 Gladys Peebles Elsie Newby, Lillian Graves, Leota Woodmansee, Evelyn Huffman. Foremost among the activities of the 844 second-year students was the junior-senior prom at which the graduating seniors were en- tertained by next year's graduates. Committees to arrange for the orchestra, the bids, the place, and the decorations were appointed by the president, and these folks put over one of the best Classen proms in history. Springlake Casino was chosen the place, and music was fumished by the Varsity Club orchestra. The members of this class also took the responsibility of decora- tions for the commencement exercise at the Municipal auditorium. Sponsors of the juniors through these activities were Mrs. Marguerite Flood, Miss Retha Wave Hulet, Miss Lucille Tandy, Miss Opal Ridenour, and Mr. Karl Brown. , i., ...i..,..L .. .e,A,., i . . . AA,A,.. Their junior high school diplomas tucked away in their memory books, some 727 sophomores let no first-year hindrances stand in their way but got down to business early in the school year. First, just to let folks know they were around, they had a nomination and election of officers which lasted for several weeks. Bill Clarke, following in the footsteps of his older brother, Bob, '38 grad, was chosen president. Individuals among this group of sophs have also done their share of putting their class on the records by participating in Qand in many cases winninglrecognitionj extra-curricular activities such as speech events, band work, and literary fields. These folks have begun well their preparations for doing big things in their next two years at Classen. When the members of the sophomore class have needed guidance in their class activities they have been advised by the sophomore sponsors who are Mr. A. M. Kincaid, Miss Maxine Appleman, Mrs. Geraldine Buzbee, Miss Miriam Gilmore, and Mr. Robert Reid. hun tl!
