K. REIFF Mr. Reiff holds the record of longest length of time in the superintendency, seven years, in the city school system. I-le is a capable and personable man and under his guidance Oklahoma City schools have become among the best in the nation. Sdzoal Ewa! The Board of Education members are Otto Rose, presidentg Ed W. Spivey, vice-president, Earl I. Iohnson, Ross Lillard, Mrs. I. S. Poole, Robin Knight, Rosco Price, Day Eezler, and Moses Shilling, member-at-large. They are endeavoring to create and maintain expanding, progressive schools. These men are faced with the prob- lem of erecting necessary new build- ings, making repairs and additions to old buildings and preparing adequate equipment for the entire system. They also must keep the welfare of the teachers in mind-their selection, their salaries, and their security in retire- ment. The school board is responsible for the cost of the upkeep of the schools and, therefore, it is well to know that school costs in Oklahoma City are ex- ceptionally low, ranking in the lowest fourth for cities of similar size in the United States. The members have played a big part in linking the schools with the community and the fact that most of these men are college graduates and successful business men who are very much interested in the schools makes the progressive system used today ac- countable. m! ' W, MR. BAKER To the students of Classen, Mr. Baker is more than just a principal of this schoolg he is a friend and advisor. He combines a sense of humor, comrade- ship, understanding and an intense interest in every student which makes him a person we all respect and ad- mire. MR. WALLACE One of the hardest-working persons in Classen is our vice-principal, Mr. Wallace. On him fall many of the tedious and distasteful duties: sched- ules of teachers and students, discip- line problems, and keeping the days routine running smoothly. THE OFFICE PERSONNEL always has a smile and an interested word for everybody. Mrs. Mavanee Iohnson, Mrs. Helen Bean and Miss lsalona Carter make up this staff. F at HANSFORD MARTIN REBA IUNE LONG President Vice-President 06 ., ttfmftfft are dal ow., ,Q ' NX 009ml ,,, , , ROBERT BLINN IAMES BROWN Secretary Treasurer S 66:44 Three years ago some six hundred students from various junior high schools stood on the thres- hold of a never-to-be-forgotten experience. Three years of high school lite lay before themg three years that either could be filled with accomplish- ments or left blank. And as the end of that time draws near, the seniors look back to see just what they have done toward filling those years. Remember back in the fall of 1935 and the spring of 1936, that was when Allen Walter, Millington Young, Iacqueline Finley and Dwight Mitchell, as sophomore officers, guided the rather uncertain destinies of the sophies. After weathering the first rough year, the class of '38 really began to blossom forth and to make the rest of Classen aware that they existed. That was the year that the juniors put on as their class play Squaring the Circle, the Russian play star- ring the class prexy, Dale Scott. Other officers that year were Dwight Mitchell, vice-president, Robert Blinn, secretary, and Roy Finerty, treasurer. And then came the prom, The seniors were the ones who should have 'lshinedf' but it was the present senior class that really occupied the lime- light. X About that time Bill Bentley was flashing across basketball courts, junior debaters and orators won medal after medal-and so the second year had been completed. And now the last, and most important year is drawing to a close. Hansford Martin as president, Robert Blinn, vice- president, Allan Walter, acting secretary, and lim Brown, treasurer, have led the senior class of '38 to its most fruitful year. Dale Scott, perhaps the most outstanding boy of the class, is president of the student council and editor of the Classen Life. Russell Holloway, smooth talking orator, has carried Classen's name with him to the heights in the speech world, The football, basketball, baseball, and swimming teams each having its share of seniors, have added laurels to Classen's prestige. The Orbit, annual year book has been published successfully by two senior boys, Phil Boyle as editor, and Roy Finerty as business manager. And so as the class of 1938 prepares to receive its diplomas, the symbols which indicate the term- ation of three years work, the seniors may look back with pride on their accomplishments. Classen will long remember its class of l938. wi .L ,V M I :Apt Q 3 - f ' .Rig ' BILL KESLER Hi-Y, president '38g Glee Club. SENIORS PRESENT BROADWAY COMEDY Stage Door, Screen Success, Finishes Dramatics For Class The senior class presented Stage Door, by Edna Ferber and George S. Kaufman, May 16-17. This is the third Kaufman play to be produced at Classen. The oth- ers were Beggar on Horseback and the musical Once in a Life- time. This play might be the story of all eager young men and women whose only thought and ambition is to see their names in lights on Broadway, The entire play takes place in a theatrical boardinghouse where these young girls live, eat, and talk theater. Terry feels that the stage is the only true medium of art: Jean, on the other hand, gives in to the glamour, and having no partic- ular talent except of a. superficial sort, succeeds in Hollywood. And for Kaye Hamilton there is only tragedy, The screen version of Stage Door was one of the outstanding pictures of 1937. The twenty-one girls and eleven boys made this one of the all time outstanding productions by Classen. SENIOR CALENDER May 16, 17 .....,,,.,., Senior Play 9 .... 2 .... The popular Comes member has as a special honor as the Orbit queen her full-page picture featured in the yearbook. The method of voting on the queen, purely an Orbit project to hasten the rate of payment, en- titled the purchasers who paid the full amount of 52.50 to 250 votes. One dollar down payments entitled the student to 100 votes for his candidate. In order to have her name plac- ed on the list of candidates a nom- inee had to receive one thousand votes. Then, after the final ballot- ing, the candidate receiving the most votes was anounced to be the Orbit queen. The Higbiernen sprang an upset the following week by taking Shawnee, 13 to U and rose to their peak to trounce a strong Chiclcasha eleven, 2U to U, After letting Capitol Hill win a heartbreak- ing 7-U victory, the boys wound up the season here against Lawton, scoring a decisive 7 to U triumph. l ln spite ot their spotty record of si: wins and tour losses, the Comets were recognized by notable sports authori ties as one of the best tearns, poten tially, in the state. Losing all but one man from the state champ- ions ot the previous season, Coach Miller's team proved their worth by administering lickings to practically all of the state's best at one time or another during the year. Led by their only returning veteran, Captain Bill Bentley, the Comets started at a snail's pace, losing to tiny Britton and to Tulsa. With the arrival ot several newly-eligible players at the second semester though, the Blue and Gold tive picked up steam and turned in several startling upsets. Notable over-turnings ot the dope bucket were the battles with Tulsa, Central, and Enid, conceded to be the top trio in the entire state. ' After absorbing a bad defeat here at the hands of the Enid boys, the Comets went up to Enid and turned in a stunning surprise victory, 29 to 26. During the middle of the season, Tulsa's Braves, destined to become state champions by virtue of defeat- ing Central in the state tinals, took a severe licking from the Shooting Stars, and even Central was upset in the final regular-scheduled game. Under the supervision of Miss Retha Wave Hulet, the girls have not lost an intra-city contest in any sport for several years and are much more active than in most schools. Although the girls shun individual prominence, and they all strive for the team as a whole, there are several who are especially noteworthy. Marjorie Yet- man, a junior, is a crack tennis player and state badminton champ besides playing on most of the other teams. Dorothy Walker and loan Bunyard are also stars in several lines. Betty Bailey and Marjorie West won the state girl's golf title last year, and as this goes to press, are favorites to repeat this year. Under the supervision of Mrs. Maxine Cooper a full day of dance classes have been offered at Classen this year. Elected by the vote of the football squad, she was attended at the coronation by the other nominees who were: Bess Lowe, Marjorie Lawr- ence, Mickey Caviness, Mary Ray, lean lnce, and Florence Defenbaugh. They were escorted by Classen boys of their own choice. VELMA PERN GRAGG BAND QUEEN The first time that the Clossen Band chose a queen to Walk at the head of their blue and gold clad ranks they broke the tradition that gentlemen prefer blondes, tor their choice, Helen Seavey, was an outeand-out Brownette. But when Christmas time rolled around llelen chose wedding bells rather than horn toots, so the band began a new search for just the pro- per amount of feminine pulchritude to be their queen. This time, however, the lads went back to the time-honored adage, and trom a group ot four contestants chose the only blonde, Velma Fern Gragg. The candidates whom Velma de- feated were Marian Chesnut, Dorothy Koch, and lean lnce. ,M y 3 WW panama, sgfw-fi', THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES Time waits tor no man is an old axiom, so with this publication of the Orbit went a hope that time might stand still and memory be re- newed ior those seniors who like old times and old friends.
