The students going out as graduates from our school are taking their places in whatever liehl of eucleavor they choose with great acceptability to 1 all and an honor to themselves. BARTON Szzpcriutemzhzt of Public Schools The services of the lloard of liducation are readily recognized as among the most important rendered by city oliicials. 'Ilbese board members re- ceive no compensation for their vvork, yet they serve on the school board, assuming one of the most important of civic duties, in that they supervise and have charge of the city schools. The school board consists of nine members. liarl li. Leech, president, represents the fourth ward. The other members are: Thomas E. McGee, retired president, of 1028, second ward: -I. O. Crawford, Day Fezler, Cleve Harrell, A. G. lloge, Frank lXlcCall, George A. Reeves, and R. F. J. XVil- liams. J. G. Stearley is clerk and business manager. Oklahoma state, in the organization and management of the public schools uses the district system. Une of the advantages of this system is that it makes every comniuuity directly responsible for the education of its children, and in this way secures the essential interest of the patrons in their local schools to make them rank among the best. These school board members have proved themselves competent to co- operate for the development of the school system. They believe that the fu- ture rests with the youth of the country and they have tried to give them the best educational facilities possible. Under their leadership the growth of the public schools has kept pace with the rapid advancement of the city. Q fx Y i f 2 f 7- Parent-Teachers Association The Classen Parent-Teachers' Association held its first meeting of the year on October 11. ,At this time the new otiicers for the year were intro- duced by Mrs. Paul Mattox, retiring president. These new officers elected at the close of last semester include: Mrs. Baxter Taylor, president g Mrs. Paul Mattox, vice-presidentg Mrs. H. E. Pate, assistant vice-presidentg Mrs. T. G. Taylor, secretary, Mrs. C. J. Myers, treasurer, Mrs. Ciprit King, reporter 5 and Mrs. J. E. Elliot, par- liamentarian. The members had two definite things in view which they wished to achieve. These were that they become better acquainted with the sophomores and assist them in getting acquainted with life in a senior high school, and that they furnish a teachers' rest room. This first objective was accomplished largely through making the ac- quaintance of the mothers of the IOB students. The rest room was fur- nished with money raised from several different sources. The students helped in doing this. by supporting two assembly programs, from which the proceeds were given to the Parent-Teachers' fund. An attendance contest was sponsored by the association to encourage enthusiasm in its work. The number of parents and teachers attending from each home room was recorded at every meeting on large charts placed in the halls. Miss Jessie Newby's home room won the prize of twenty dollars for the semester. The winner was given the privilege of spending the money in any way desired. The students agreed to purchase four charts showing pictures of early Roman life. Through the influence of Mrs. Taylor and with the help of Judge Baxter Taylor, the fathers have been induced to take a more prominent part in the P. T. A. programs. At a dinner given for the fathers on December 6. the entire program was contributed by the men, which took the form of a debate. Dorothy Brewer and Howard Anderson, Classen seniors, spoke before the patrons at one of the regular meetings. A questionnaire had been pre- pared by these students which was presented to the mothers. These lists of questions were made out for the purpose of seeing whether the child meas- ured up to the standard required of a normal high school student. Following this meeting the members voted that at each session a student representative should be present, to join the discussions, and take a part on the program. The Classen P. T. A., one of the chain of this national organization. was constructed under the plan of the National Congress with six major departments. The entire Classen faculty are members of the organization and this year a greater number of parents than ever before have aided in the work. Fifteen QAQamAQmQm.
