BARTON Szzpcriutemzhzt of Public Schools The services of the lloard of liducation are readily recognized as among the most important rendered by city oliicials. 'Ilbese board members re- ceive no compensation for their vvork, yet they serve on the school board, assuming one of the most important of civic duties, in that they supervise and have charge of the city schools. The school board consists of nine members. liarl li. Leech, president, represents the fourth ward. The other members are: Thomas E. McGee, retired president, of 1028, second ward: -I. O. Crawford, Day Fezler, Cleve Harrell, A. G. lloge, Frank lXlcCall, George A. Reeves, and R. F. J. XVil- liams. J. G. Stearley is clerk and business manager. Oklahoma state, in the organization and management of the public schools uses the district system. Une of the advantages of this system is that it makes every comniuuity directly responsible for the education of its children, and in this way secures the essential interest of the patrons in their local schools to make them rank among the best. These school board members have proved themselves competent to co- operate for the development of the school system. They believe that the fu- ture rests with the youth of the country and they have tried to give them the best educational facilities possible. Under their leadership the growth of the public schools has kept pace with the rapid advancement of the city. These new officers elected at the close of last semester include: Mrs. Baxter Taylor, president g Mrs. Paul Mattox, vice-presidentg Mrs. H. E. Pate, assistant vice-presidentg Mrs. T. G. Taylor, secretary, Mrs. C. J. Myers, treasurer, Mrs. Ciprit King, reporter 5 and Mrs. J. E. Elliot, par- liamentarian. The members had two definite things in view which they wished to achieve. These were that they become better acquainted with the sophomores and assist them in getting acquainted with life in a senior high school, and that they furnish a teachers' rest room. This first objective was accomplished largely through making the ac- quaintance of the mothers of the IOB students. The rest room was fur- nished with money raised from several different sources. The students helped in doing this. by supporting two assembly programs, from which the proceeds were given to the Parent-Teachers' fund. An attendance contest was sponsored by the association to encourage enthusiasm in its work. The number of parents and teachers attending from each home room was recorded at every meeting on large charts placed in the halls. Miss Jessie Newby's home room won the prize of twenty dollars for the semester. The winner was given the privilege of spending the money in any way desired. The students agreed to purchase four charts showing pictures of early Roman life. Through the influence of Mrs. Taylor and with the help of Judge Baxter Taylor, the fathers have been induced to take a more prominent part in the P. T. A. programs. At a dinner given for the fathers on December 6. the entire program was contributed by the men, which took the form of a debate. Dorothy Brewer and Howard Anderson, Classen seniors, spoke before the patrons at one of the regular meetings. A questionnaire had been pre- pared by these students which was presented to the mothers. These lists of questions were made out for the purpose of seeing whether the child meas- ured up to the standard required of a normal high school student. Following this meeting the members voted that at each session a student representative should be present, to join the discussions, and take a part on the program. The Classen P. T. A., one of the chain of this national organization. was constructed under the plan of the National Congress with six major departments. The entire Classen faculty are members of the organization and this year a greater number of parents than ever before have aided in the work. L AVVRENCE KI,l-IIN Vice-jwcsidcnit .... ........ A NDY BECK Secretary ....... .... E LEANOR NAYLOR Treasurer ..... .... J oHN Ol.DFlEl.ll The executive council is the lawmaking body of the school. It has general authority over all school affairs, and is subject only to the approval of the sponsor and the principal. The council is composed of eight members. These include the president, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer of the school: and the presidents of the sophomore, junior, and senior classes. The otiicers hold their positions for the entire year. The representative council mem- bers are elected for one semester only. The executive council forms a part of the student council which is composed of the executive and representative councils. The three class presidents and the vice-president of the school also are members of the Discipline committee, which is under the authority of the student council. The executive council represented Classen in the all-city school parade which pre- ceeded the dedication services of the Capitol Hill high school. Twrrzfy-mic CANN Ctsk C45 Cuix ci-cfs, QCA 11 M5 Q s -1 N JN 7 9 K K i K Inter-School Council The Inter-School Council of the senior high schools of Oklahoma City is another organization which shows the rapid progress the schools are making. Oklahoma City has three senior high schools to take care of the many students, which are located in separate parts of the city. Though this ar- rangement is necessary, as in all larger cities, it is desired that the three schools be united as a whole and that the spirit of rivalry, which exists among the schools when they are contestants, should be a friendly one. This year, the three schools-Classen, Central and Capitol Hill-have taken a step toward making this wish a realization. They have organized into what is known as the Inter-City Council. This council is composed of six representatives from each school who meet together on the third Thurs- day of each month for the purpose of discussing and promoting any problem or activity which is of mutual interest to all the schools. Classen's representatives include Lawrence Klein, presidentg Eleanor Naylor, secretary, Richard Buchanan, Norman Anderson, Howard Ander- son, and Jack Stout. The president and secretary of each group preside at the meeting held in their school. The meetings are held alternately among the three schools. The purpose of the organization is to promote a friendly feeling among the senior high schools of the city. VV ith this purpose in view and by select- ing representatives who are prominent in student activities in their respective schools, ones who have an understanding of how detrimental to all institu- tions anything but friendly rivalry can be, the Inter-City Council has in its one year of organization done much to further unity between the schools. The Inter-City basketball banquet was sponsored by the Inter-City Coun- cil. This was given iinmediately after the close of the basketball season. Eleanor Naylor acted as chairman of the committee in making plans for the banquet. Guests included the principals of the city high schools, J. R. Barton, superintendent of schools, the high school coaches and ten basketball players from each. The players were allowed to bring one guest each. United we stand, divided we fall, is one of the best known sentences ever phrased, and it has proved to be one of the truest. It is the first principle of- all organizations. It applies to home and country, to school and church. to business and politics. This unity of spirit and purpose then should be one of the prime factors which should be taught while preparing for life during the school years. The Inter-City Council, with the aid of the student body. is attempting to realize this ambition. Twenty-Iwn CQOX C45. C-+5 QXXN.. Cfe'5. Caafk MARX Csfsi Ii ' . . She is found, and her identity is proven by a Crimson Star on her shoul- der. N l The operetta was under the directorship of Miss Fern Hoover, Miss Mary Belle Huh- hard and W. L. Hehestreit. 'x N N e Summary of the Season In the fall of 1928 Classen's grid machine was confronted with the dif- ficult task of battling--not only their opponents-but a low school morale, which was the result of a disastrous season last year. The task of building up this needed morale fell upon the shoulders of a new coach of the Comet eleven, namely, VVes1ey L. Fry. In his first year here he has proved his ability by turning out an eleven of which Classen is indeed proud. Starting the season with only a few of last year's lnainstays returning, Coach Fry put his men through strenuous early-season work-outs. The Comets faced a hard schedule, and all work had to be done earnestly. Classen followers believe that this has been a successful season. Nine powerful aggregations faced the Comets this year. In five of the games Classen came out on the long end of the score. In the other four their op- ponents were forced to fight hard for all points garnered. Although our boys were not ahead in points, in the games lost, they were ahead in fighting and sportsmanship qualities. In the first game the Comets invaded the stomping grounds ,of the 121 Reno Indians. After fighting on even terms for a greater part of the game, Classen pushed the pigskin over the goal line for the only counter of the game. Try for goal failed. Guthrie, on their own field, was the next opponent. The Jays were favored over the Comets by quite a margin, but they were indeed handed a surprise when Comet linemen and backs functioned well to hold the score to 6-0 in favor of Guthrie. Classen gained more yardage, her punts were bet- ter, and she fought harder, but frequent fumbles in critical moments kept the Comets from scoring. The Wolf pack from Shawnee was the next opponent on the list. This game was played at Western League Park. In previous tilts, two were tied, and last year Shawnee won a heart-rending 14-13 battle. The Comets went down Fighting hard, the thought of defeat never entered their minds. They were playing for Classen, fighting for Classen, to prove that they play the best game in the nation. The game was not decided until the final gun, which found the tall Athenians with their futuristic style of play, ahead 25-ll, but the Comets went down fighting. We have other things of which we are proud also-three All-Americans from one school. No other school can say this. The Comets are different, you know: they never follow the crowd, but are found leading it. Andy Beck, Captain and guard of the All-American, State, Conference, City, etc., is by far the headiest general in the U. S. He takes our coach's place during the game. Jack McCracken is placed at center on the same teams as Andy, because of his uncanny ability to come through in the pinches. He is undoubtedly the best center in the U. S. Ryland Milner, chosen as guard on the All-American second team, played Sensationally in the tournament. Always covering his man, large or small, they never came too big or dangerous for our fighting little package of dynamite. The other fellows who were great aids in our many victories, but who, perhaps, have not received the credit due them, are: George McFarlane, mighty forward: Paul Mayo and Williard McGraw, pony forwards, dangerous and very clever: Elmo Wright, fighting guardg Tom Merrick, brilliant forward and co-pilot with Mayo next year: Clyde Dinger, another fighting guard: Carl Sewell, forward-great things are expected of him next yearg Howard Nicholson, powerful and fighting forward: Chas. Dinger, ever-helpful mascot and a dan- gerous, tricky basketeer himself: and, last but not least, those faithful, hard working subs who sat on the bench and watched their teammates win the glory, we are greatly indebted to them. In a season of thirty-two games, only two were on the lost side of the column, one to Central by one point, and the other to Athens bv four points. Scoring 902 points to OPDUU' ents' 478, the Comets furnished a most successful season: under the brotherly guidance of our pride and joy, Coach Iba. He is responsible for the actions of his team, and to him goes the credit of being the best highschool coach in America or the world. The Comets had an average of 28 points per game, to 14 for opponents. The regular conference season was finished with l7 victories against l defeat. Then came the district games at Guthrie, which we won easily from Guthrie, 30-16. Next were the fourth district games at El Reno. The first game was quite easy, but El Reno was very stubborn. McCracken scored five field goals-all the Comets made to beat the Indians 15-13. In the State games, Crowder was defeated 43-10. Mayo was hot, scoring fifteen points. Tulsa was the next opponent. The Comets wanted revenge for their defeat in the State finals last year. Their scoring demons were there, trying hard, but Andy, jack, Ryland and the others kept them in the shade throughout the contest. The Comets were certainly a won- derful, smooth-working machine that night. We fought our friendly rivals, Central, for the State Championship the next night. Through three quarters Classen trailed: Central enjoyed a 7 point lead in the third quarter. Then Ryland got red behinds the ears, and we knew something was going to happen. CIHSSCII gradually drew up to 17-18. Then johnson of Central, and Capt. Andy went out on per- sonals. Milner was fouled with only a short time to play. Did he miss the gift shot? No. he calmly made it with a wide grin on his red face, while 2500 ardent fans sat spell-bound. Om' hundred ff ff fl f 1 1 I I 1. f 1 Y, I 1 4 f f C235 C1-AN Qui 7623-5 C5i'Q-Jo. Then with only a littlc while left to play, Classen got the ball with Jack and Merrick back. These words came from the lanky center's mouth, You go in, Tom, I'm going to make this one. He was standing past the center of the court. He got set, and sent a high arching sphere toward the hoop. Swish! A moment later the game was over. 20-18 Classen. Big jack was our big, strong, blushing hero. Mayo and McGraw covered themselves with laurel wreaths in this fracas. After winning the State, Classen journeyed to Chicago in quest of more laurels. In their first game Monticello, Miss., furnished the opposition. The Comets were con- siderably better, though the Mississippians were very stubborn and the Comets were in dan- ger several times. The game ended 22-20 Classen. After getting over this first hurdle, which is always the hardest, Classen really did run into some heavy opposition, Salt Lake City. It required two extra periods to decxue the winner. But as has been demonstrated before, our Comets delivered in the pinch, and won 26-23. It was Capt. Andy's smart headwork, and his confidence in Jack, that brought about victory in that game. This victory placed them in position to win from Ashland, laSt year's National Champs. Ashland was indeed a wonder team. They used some very effective block plays against the opposition. As in previous games Classen was trailing at the half. Coach Iba had evi- dently solved Ashland's weakness, for when the boys took the floor again he knew we had another victory in the sack. The Cotnets play their opponent's game for awhile, then, if they trail. the opponents have to be satisfied with the Comets' style of play. The stalling tactics of Ashland were met bv some as equally well-planned by the Comets. McCracken and Beck played great games which brought us through 16-14. Warren. Ark.. tourney darkhorse, was eliminated by Classen in a brilliantly played game the next night, 33-22. It was big Tom Merrick's guarding of the uncanny Creed, and Tom's ever watchful tactics, coupled with McCracken's phenomenal gathering of points, that fea- tured. Coach said that Tom played the greatest game a highschool boy ever played. Creed, Ark. forward, is certainly respected by the Classen fellows. The farmer boys from Joes, Colorado, had reached the semi-finals and opposed Classen in the same bracket. Although much the smaller, the Comets used their skill and headwork to win 29-23. The Colorado boys were baffled by the alternate slow-breaking and fast-breaking offense of the Comets. Beck was particularly hot. McCracken and the other fellows also came in for their share of honors. This game put us in the finals of the National, against Athens, Texas. In the first quar- ter it looked like a Classen victory, but an unfortunate accident occurred which took the pep out of the boys. Merrick, thrown by an Athens forward. badly twisted his knee. He was a great loss to the boys on the fioor. McGraw, who had burned his hand and arm, was un- able to play in any of the games. His presence on the bench inspired the fellows on the floor. however. VVil1ard was greatly missed, because of his cleveruess in the games. Mr. lba was the best-liked, smartest Coach and gentleman of them all at the tournament. Classen has the cleanest bunch of fellows on her basketball team of any in the world. They certainly were the outstanding tournament team, and they, by their gentlemanly man- ners, clean sportsmanship, hard, aggressive playing, won the admiration of even their bit- terest opponents. 7 We are indeed proud of our boys for their many victories and the honorable way in which they have conducted themselves. They have brought us much fame, and established Classen as one of the best basketball schools in the world. Tom Merrick and Paul Mayo will be co-pilots of next year's quintet. Capitol Hill took the championship the first year: Central obtained the title in 19253 Capitol Hill again in 19263 and the Comets in 1927, having only one point scored against them in the all championship games. This year the city championship cup was won by Capitol Hill. The Comet Maidens opened the season this year by defeating Central by a score of .Z-0. They held the Capitol Hill Redskins for a scoreless tie in the second game. In the third game Capitol Hill and Classen played again for the title. Though the Redskins were dc- termined to win from the Cometsby a large score, they were able to make only one goal against their opponents. Thus, Capitol Hill obtained the city championship of 1928. Practice games arranged with junior high schools as in previous years were in this year's schedule. Katherine Ross, left inside for Classen, was not only an excellent player and captain of her school team, but an outstanding player of the Times' City Team. Her brilliant work for the Comets has proved a constant threat to every opposing eleven. Ruth Keel, center halfback, known for her quick work for the Comets was chosen captain of the Times' City Team. Elsie French and Ida Carter were played as right and left inside on the star eleven.
