The first day we became lost and had to get a guide to show us to our classroom. Several members of our class received the honor of playing on the Junior Varsity Basketball team. We were the first Freshman class to enter the new High School building. Climbing out of the windows to get to lunch early and sifting snuff around in English Class were favorite pas- times. Remember, boys ? Exempting exams was another high light of this year. As Sophomores, we began to settle down, This was a nearly impossible task for us. Some of the class became members of the Varsity Basketball team and two became cheerleaders. Our Junior year found us as busy as beavers again, Firstcame the Magazine Sales Campaign, which was a great race. This got things moving again. Then came the day when the building was almost rocking--our rings had arrived. In April we had our Junior-Senior Banquet at the new White- ville Hotel. We used Starlight as our theme. The Beta Club Tapping was a great event for Carolyn Davis and Sidney Warnerg they were the first of our class to be tapped. In May five members of our class were chosen as marshals. Chief was Sidney Warner, and others were Carolyn Davis, Etta Gray Campbell, Betty Wallace and Joyce Priest. Play- ing Peek-a-boo is also a delightful memory, isn't it, Charles Lee ? Along with our Senior year came Senior Privileges. We were allowed to go to lunch one minute early! Eight more classmates received the honor of becoming Beta Club members. Like all Senior classes we gave a Senior play and were entertained at a banquet by the Junior class. We learned to build an annual and an autobiography! Altogether it was a wonderful year, We can not realize that time has passed so rapidly and we will be on our own. We wish to express our sincere appreciation to our teachers, who have worked so patiently with us during the past twelve years. Etta Gray Campbell Class Historian IASI Wlll All IISIAMH We,the members of the Senior Class of 1953-54, being of fairly sound bodies and with minds only slightly affected from cramming for exams, do declare this to be our Last Will and Testa- ment, Article I Section I. To our Alma Mater we leave our matchless love and loyalty. May we strive to attain the high ideals for which it stands. Section Il. To Mr. Lathan and the faculty, who with their patience and fortitude have counseled us, we leave our gratitude for interest and guidance in helping us become the class of '54, Section III. To our parents we wish to express our appreciation for all the many wonderful things that have been done for us. Article II Section I. To the Junior Class we leave our coveted place as Seniors, along with the dignity, self-satisfaction and all the good times that go with being Seniors. Section II. To the Sophomores we leave our two betteriyears of high school, and we assign the duty of being host at the 1956 Junior-Senior Banquet. Section III. To the Freshman Class we leave our experience, so that they won't have to learn the hard way. Article III Section I. Our individual bequests are as follows: I, Yates Burney, leave my ability to sit in class and absorb nothing to Frankie McKee. I, Pauline Helms, leave my love for French to Janice Elkins and Goldie Ellis. I, Sidney Warner, leave my ability to do everything right, in the teachers' sight, to Ralph and Charles Burney. I, Charles Campbell, leave my position as president of the Student Council to H.B. Memory, I, David McNeill, leave my popularity with everyone to J.C. Lanier. I, Virginia McKee, leave my height to Ruth Neal Caulk. I, Dolly Atkinson, leave my urge to disagree with everything to Juanita Atkinson. I, Kewpie I-laire, leave my ability to catch a husband to Sadie Priest and Grace Lanier. I, Lislie McKee, leave my love for basketball to Deedie Marlowe. l, John Porter, leave my height to David Heustess. I, Etta Gray Campbell, leave my willingness to help anybody to Girthia McLamb. I, Cornelia Packer, leave my dark hair and complexion to Ruby Elkins. I, Carolyn Davis, leave the honor of writing the Last Will and Testament to anybody who wants it. I, Evelyn Clark, leave my quietness to Shelby McDonald. I, Lou Ellen Prevatte, leave my shorthand ability to Grey Powers and Shirley McKeithan. I, Joyce Priest, since I won't be needing my basketball shoes after this year, leave them to Julia White, to use when she wears out her own walking around town. I, William Melvin, leave my height to Norwood Meggs. I, Eddie Nelson, leave my athletic ability to Avery Currie. I, Emma Jean Collum, leave my bus, 1452, to Shirley Meshaw. I, Betty Wallace, leave my ability to talk, to Joyce White and Martha Bridgers, because we never hear them use their own. . I, Betsy Singletary, leave my neatness in everything to Judy Pait. I, Kathryn Harrelson, leave my love for Droopy , the basketball referee., to Peggy McCall. I, Harold High, leave my position on the football team to Bobby Stubbs. In witness whereof we have set our signatures this twenty- second day of April, nineteen hundred fifty-four. Witness: Testator: President: Betty Wallace Carolyn Davis ' Sponsor: Mrs. Anne P. Key , Principal: W.R, Lathan I, MASS PIIIIPHHIY As I, the mystic dreamer, gaze into the future, I see great things ahead for the class of 1953-54. Would you like to look too? Then gather 'round while I tell you what I see. First, since I have this mystic power, I shall dream the best dream of all for myself, I, Pauline Helms, see that I finally received the long-desired bouquet of red roses from the boy of my dreams! Who could wish for more ? I see Betty Wallace, but where is she? Not Clarkton for sure. She's in Washington! Her ambition to be in the middle of everything has taken her straight into the President's circle, a lady ambassador. Well, anything can happen now. Look, there's Betsy Singletary. A school marm? I can hardly believe it. She isn't much bigger than a kid herself. I faintly see a form in the distance. She's bending over a sewing machine, A closer look shows me it's Lislie McKee teaching a freshman to sew. Patience, Lislie, she'll learn, I hear a beautiful voice coming from somewhere far away, now it grows stronger. It's Kathryn Harrelson! She's on Broadway and is really packing them in. I see Joyce Priest has her wish. She's a nurse and a great one too. How do I know? Well, anyone that can take care of Queen Elizabeth has to be good. Don't you agree '? Who's that good- looking man Joyce is shaking hands with? He must be a doctor. He's turning around, and it's Charles Lee Campbell. Why, the old sawbones! Looks as if his wish came true too. While we're visiting, let's go down to the airport and meet the next plane. Ihear there's an important person aboard. We're just in time. It's landing. What a landing! David McNeill really knows his business, doesn't he? What a handsome pilot! Wonder if it's the uniform ? Say,who's the young lady helping the passengers out? It's Evelyn Clark. Now,that's a surprise for you. I just knew she 'd be a housewife, That must be the much-talked-about passenger, or why are all those reporters crowding around? It's only Dolly Atkinson. What can she have done ? Pardon me, Madame Reporter, but ---Emma Jean Collum, what are you doing here? You're a reporter? Tell me what Dolly's done that's causing all that commotion. You mean she's married to a Prince and she's just re- turning on a visit? Would you ever believe it? I see a picture of Eddie Nelson and Harold High on the front page of Football Roundup. HalfbackEddie and QuarterbackHarold are nationally famous football players. Isn't that grand? Guess who their manager is? Buzz Melvin! Now there's a great man, I see Yates Burney is making a great success of farming. He's discovered a device to do all the work around his place. I know a genius when I see one, and Yates is no fake! Etta Gray Campbell is the receptionist for a certain Mr. Rockefeller. I hear wedding bells too. No, I haven't forgotten Carolyn Davis. You can bet she's doing a great job wherever She is. At the present she's in Paris designing gowns for the Parisian fashion world. She has recently won a gold medal as the world's number one designer. Lou Ellen Prevatte ? She has two problems---money and a husband. Did I say problems ? A handsome husband and a million dollars are no problems. Kewpie Haire seems to have done well for herself too. She's an Army wife now. Living at the post can be fun too. Ask Kewpie. Bobby Gene Pait is a great baseball player, He is the star pitcher for the New York Giants. And a good looking one too. Virginia McKee is a missionary. Right now she's in Africa with her husband, who's a doctor. Good luck, Virginia. Who expected Cornelia Packer to go into movies ? She's almost as famous as Lana Turner, in fact, she has just won an Oscar for her great comedy hit, Life In Clarkton . John Porter is none other than that great first baseman you've heard so much about since the Dodgers have won the World Series three years straight. Last of all is our beloved Sidney Warner, who is a great scientist, now even more famous than Einstein! Why? Because he discovered the great formula for world peace.
