'?7 m R Cflass History The greatest day of our lives was in September of 1949 - the day we entered Clarkton High School. Although we were all a little timid and shy, we felt our importance at being in high school. Our greatest fun was chan- ging classes and having a different teacher for each subject. Never will we forget those dear-old-days in health class with Mr. Meares as teacher. Let's not forget Bertha, our chief entertainer, with the aid of her assis- tant, Marie. What fun we had cooking in Home Economics! Remember those egg custards and baked bananas, girls? The highlights of our Sophomore year centered around the Library. Remember dodging those books and erasers in English class, boys? Much to our surprise we girls were chosen to serve at the Junior-Senior Banquet, and what atime we had trying to be quiet so we would not disturb those dig- nified Juniors and Seniors. What fun we had eating on the porch! We were very proud for a number of our class to be tapped into the Beta Club: re- member the initiation? Onion corsages! What a surprise we had at the beginning of our Junior year! We thought we had joined the army for sure when Coach McKissick greeted us with his, Be at ease. What a thrill we had choosing our class rings and selling magazines to make money to finance our Junior-Senior Banquet. Our Junior-Senior Banquet was really out of this world , with Harry's Ancho- rage transformed into a ballroom with circus decorations. How proud we were to have five of our classmates chosen for marshals: Chief Ethel Min- cey, Elizabeth Campbell, Nadine Gooden, Howard Watts, and Mary Ellen Nelson. Seniors at last and what a thrill! At last we are having that long- looked-for senior privilege, going to lunch early. What fun it was ordering our calling cards and invitations, and, most of all, choosing our superla- tives. We are planning many ways to raise money for our trip to Washing- ton, D.C., which we could not afford to miss. We elected the following class officers at the first of the year: President, David Greene, Vice-Pre- sident, Elizabeth Campbellg Secretary, Opal Gray Meggsg Treasurer, Do- nald Harrelsong Reporters, Esther Griffin and Nadine Gooden. With the thoughts of class night, senior play and, at last, graduation, we as the Seniors of Clarkton High School sincerely hope that this school will prosper much more in our absence than in our presence. To Mr. Lathan we leave our deepest gratitude for his guidance in helping us to become equipped to be independent as we enter into the world on our own. Section 2. To the faculty we leave our deepest appreciation for their patience, interest, and guidance, and for the time they have de- voted to our interests. ARTICLE II Section l. To the school we leave our most perfect records and our unabused furniture, hoping that it will remain so for many years. Section Z. To the Junior Class we leave our love for English. We also leave with them the honor of being Seniors of '53-'54. Section 3. To the Sophomores we leave two of our better years of high school. Section 4. To the Freshman Class we leave the privilege we have had of obtaining more knowledge, and we hope that they will work even harder to reach their goal. ARTICLE III The Seniors leave the following items to the Juniors as herein lis ted: Richard Bridgers leaves his good looks to V. lliam Ray Melvin, Ma- rie Baldwin, her beautiful voice to Dolly Atkinson, Russell Clark, his perfect attendance in English Class to Yates Burney, Elizabeth Camp- bell, her tiny figure and baby face to Betty Jean Parker, Joe Lee Dennis, his ability to find his girl and be true to her to Eddie Ray Nelson, Jose- phine Shaw, her quiet ways to Betsy Singletary, J. W. Elkins, his way with the teachers to Bobby Gene Pait, Nadine Gooden, her position as President of the Beta Club to Sidney Warner, Howard Watts, his honor grades to Charles Lee Campbell, David Greene, his way with the girls to David Ray McNeill, Esther Griffin, her long school bus route to Lou Ellen Prevatte, Donald Harrelson, his joking way to Betty Wallace, Bob- by Johnson, his weight to be divided between Cornelia Mae Packer and Annie Singletary, Opal Meggs, her pleasing personality to Etta Gray Campbell, Norman Parker, his many queer ways to John Porter, Mary Ellen Nelson, her position on the basketball team to Joyce Priest, Billy Johnson, his English grades to Harold High, Betty Gray Priest, her abi- lity to keep house and come to school to Virginia McKee, Doris Gray Phillips, her ability to play a piano to Evelyn Clark, Kenneth Pope, his bookkeeping ability to Carolyn Davis, Violet McDonald, her pleasing dis- position to Emma Jean Collumg Oran Young, his curly hair to Virginia McCall, Bertha Heustess and Marjorie Clark, their ability to go steady to Kewpie Haire and Pauline Helms. Bertha Heuste ss Marjorie Clark Te stators Prophecy Today I have finished my long awaited tour of the country. I have either heard from or visited every person from the Dear Class of '53. As I visited Violet McDonald in Albany, N. Y., she told me about keeping books for a Mr. Sway and she says, He does make her sway. She said she knew Joe Lee Dennis in nearby Brooklyn. I learned that he is the owner of the Dodgers. He has plenty of help in managing them, since he is assisted by his glamorous wife, Marjorie Clark. Joe has done all he can to own a famous ball player, a classmate of ours who is a second baseman. He is none other than Billy Johnson, the most athletic of the Class of '53. On New York's largest night club neon sign showed the discovery of a pair of the most famous entertainers of the day. They were familiar names, Bobby Johnson and Marie Baldwin, who are gaining fame with the piano and Marie's lovely voice, as well as their humorous jokes. Their popularity goes partly to their faithful ma- nager, Russell Clark. I decided to visit Washington, D. C. , even though I knew none of our class would be there. I entered the Capitol Building, and the first thing I heard was of the new twin job of confidential secretaries to the President. I was allowed to meet them and, lo and behold, they were Opal Meggs and Elizabeth Campbell, who always worked together in school. In my dim memory I could hardly recognize the name of the pilot who recently won fame by saving a. passenger plane from a crash. Yes! It was Donald Harrel- son, who studied air planes most of his spare time. More news came of the new discovery, a cure for cancer. Yes, I know that scientist, Howard Watts, who would try when no one else had the courage. As I entered Hollywood, I saw an advertisement of the famous hairdressers, Richard and Bertha., very exclusive hair stylists who cater only to the most fa- mous of the movie stars! On down the street, I spied a little shoe shine boy who was none other than our own little Oran Young. He just shines shoes to keep his labora- tory going at night. We expect a new discovery from him soon. Passing through Texas, I made another discovery. By the road was the sign, Elkins' Construction Company, a name with a familiar ring! Oh yes, J. W. , and he gets every project in Texas since he is so famous there. I was returning home by way of Fayetteville, and I decided to visit the Veterans Hospital. There I found two lovable Army Nurses, Josephine Shaw and Doris Phil- lips, who both are engaged to Army Generals. Jean was right down town there as Manager of Jean's Dress Shop. She often helps model, since she is good at that, too. In Whiteville, I discovered that David Greene had completely run Troy out of business with his few songs and many jokes. Mary Lennon lives near the radio sta- tion, where she keeps the happy home of her family. Clarkton brings many happy memories. Side by side live Esther and Betty Gray, who joined the Matrimony Club and love it. Down the road about a mile is the Parker-Pope Farm. Kenneth makes the plans while Norman is foreman, and a more successful one you will never find. Nadine and I live on the other side of town. Though we were not as lucky as some, we live together. We run the Gooden-Nelson Old Maid Home. We enjoy just looking for strangers and listening for new gossip, as all old maids do.
