We look forward toward a limitless future waiting just around the bend. Gratefully we remember those who first tread Clarksville High's path. Not until the fourth quarter did the TIGERS compile its victory margin. A field goal and touchdown in the final period brought the TIGERS their first decision. Neither squad scored in the first period. The TIGERS' first score came as LESTER rambled 28 yards for the first touchdown. In the final quarter a 47-yard pass play from BALLEW to JETER gave the TIGERS their big gainer of a march which began on their own 32-yard line. A field goal from 21 yards out, kicked by ESSARY, put the TIGERS ahead 9-6. The Warriors took to the air in an effort to catch up but PRUITT intercepted a pass at the Idabel 28 and with some good blocks by teammates went all the way for a 15-6 Clarksville win. CLARKSVILLE 0 DE KALB 10 During the first half, DeKalb managed only three first downs and the TIGERS two--the second coming on the final play of the half. The TIGERS missed a great opening to score early in the first quarter when SEGLESKI recovered a fumble on DeKalb's nine yard line. Despite endless chances to hit pay dirt the TIGERS were unable to convert. About the only thing the Tiger Fans had to cheer about was the fine defensive work of BACKUS, BURTNER, ALEXANDER, and PRUITT. 45 CLARKSVILLE 32 WILMER-HUTCHINS 6 Scoring in rapid succession the first two times they got the ball, the TIGERS out manned the EAGLES to get back in the winning column. Despite several injuries, BALLEW returned the opening kickoff 90 yards for the TIGERS’ initial score. In the next play LESTER out ran the Eagle secondary for the TIGERS’ second tally. Just before the half. BEADLE found BOGGESS with a 34 yard aerial to put the TIGERS on the Eagle 14. The TIGERS scored once more in the third and twice in the fourth. This game proved to be one of the most thrilling exhi- bitions given by the local eleven in several years. CLARKSVILLE 26 HOOKS 22 A 29 yard pass with 20 seconds on the clock provided the exciting climax to the Hooks- Clarksville game. BALLEW had a big night completing 7 passes out of 17 throws to BOG- GESS, LESTER, and JETER for 113 yards. It was the final throw on the fourth down and nine yard situation to LESTER in the waning seconds of the game that will be remembered by the TIGER fans long after the season closes. The TIGERS appreciated this game even more to avenge the win that Hooks had last season. 46 CLARKSVILLE 0 NEW BOSTON 24 The New Boston Lions rode over the Tigers with a score of 24-0. Both teams played a good defensive game but neither team yielded a lot of yards. New Boston did manage to gain, and they did it so effectively that they pushed across three scores. The TIGERS had a chance to get on the scoreboard in the last minute of the game when BALLEW took a pass from MORRIS at the Lion 10 yard line. The ball was jarred loose and the Lions recovered. The Lions also fumbled on the next play and ALEXANDER recovered for Clarksville at the 10 yard line. Then as luck will go, Clarksville fumbled again and that was the last threat! CLARKSVILLE 38 WINNSBORO 6 The TIGERS, coming out to win their first conference game, made the first score with only 55 seconds gone from the clock. Practically every TIGER on the squad got in the fracas but PRUITT stole the offensive spotlight by scoring three times in the second quarter. McGUIRE, TYLER, and LESTER scored once each with ESSARY booting two extra points. The third quarter score for the TIGERS came as a result of a Raider fumble on the Winnsboro 29. TYLER then carried the ball to the 13. Clarksville's last touch- down followed a 55 yard march among MORRIS, BOGGESS, and LESTER early in the fourth quarter. The Raiders only score resulted when they took the kickoff on their own 35 and scrambled to the TIGERS' 1 yard line. 47 CLARKSVILLE 14 COMMERCE 6 An almost immovable defensive and offensive attack combined to give the TIGERS their second district win. The TIGERS lost no time showing their strength They recovered a Commerce fumble in the second play and drove to the Commerce 1 before losing the ball on downs. ALEXANDER got into the Commerce backfield and recovered a loose ball on the 12 yard line. PRUITT ran for four yards; then BALLEW scampered around right end for the score. ESSARY added the extra point to give the TIGERS a 7-0 lead. In the beginning of the second half when Commerce had the ball, the defensive unit took over. BALLEW and others held Commerce to 7 yards in three plays and took the punt for a first on their own 41. Later in this quarter BALLEW passed to JETER for 7 yards and the score. WALLACE kicked the extra point. Commerce's only tally came in the third quarter on an intercepted pass. CLARKSVILLE 33 COOPER 7 Cooper received the opening kickoff but fumbled on the first play. Clarksville recovered and three plays later PRUITT made a 33 yard run for the first score. With only 1 minute 35 seconds in the game, Clarks- ville led 7-0. The TIGERS held a comfortable lead all the way. The TIGERS allowed the visitors to cross the midfield stripe only five times during the entire contest. Regardless of the 17 penalties which cost the TIGERS 190 yards, they amassed 292 yards on the ground and 36 in the air. The win, which left Clarksville the only undefeated 15-AA team, was a perfect ending for the 1967 Homecoming. 48 CLARKSVILLE 28 RIVERCREST 14 Although the TIGERS' defense held the Itebels well in the first series of plays, the game that was to determine a tie for district champion- ship was looking rough for the TIGERS as the Rebels remained in control until halftime. But holding the TIGERS was not enough for the Rebels; they scored twice in the second quarter and picked up two extra points for an eight’ point lead. Halfway through the third quarter the Rebels were forced to kick from their own 47. BALLEW returned to the Rivercrest 44 and passed to JETER for another score; the rushing try for extra points failed. The trailing TIGERS forced another Rebel punt near midfield and set up for business on their own 21. BALLEW then set out for a 48 yard ramble which again put the TIGERS in scoring position. PRUITT went over from the six yard line. BALLEW ran for the two extra points giving the TIGERS a six point lead early in the fourth quarter. Near the end of the fourth quarter. McGUIRE on the 20 intercepted a Rivercrest pass which gave the TIGERS their last score. CLARKSVILLE 22 MT. VERNON 6 The faithful but somewhat damp fans who fol- lowed the TIGERS were thrilled to see the Blue and White bring home the 15-A A champion- ship as they romped past Mt. Vernon. Hindered by the inclement weather and a strong, well- prepared TIGER defense, Mt. Vernon's quarter- back succeeded in completing only 7 of 26 passing attempts, 4 of which were to people with the wrong colored jerseys. McGUIRE, weaving through the on-rushing Mt. Vernon line, set the TIGERS up in business at the Mt. Vernon 17 yard line with a dazzling 65 yard kickoff return. Six plays later Clarksville got on the scoreboard as DUREN caught a pass on the first play of the second quarter. The Clarks- ville game plan of using their inside running game paid off. The stout Clarksville defense limited Mt. Vernon to 9 yards rushing and 80 yards total offense, while the TIGER offense rolled up 143 yards in the game. As the clock ticked away the final seconds of the game, the TIGERS were in undisputed possession of their second consecutive district championship. 49 CLARKSVILLE 7 KAUFMAN 7 After both Clarksville and Kaufman exploded in the first quarter and a half of the bi-district game, the remainder became a battle of trying for first downs. Quarterback BALLEW hit DUREN on the 35 and he went for the goal. WALLACE kicked the extra point. The TIGERS were on the move the next time they got the ball going from their own 39 to the Lion 32 before a fumble halted the drive. Lion Tailback Johnson circled left end for 68 yards and a touch- down. Quarterback Qudisky tied it with the Lions' extra point. The game, ending with a tied score 7-7, was determined by first downs. The Kaufman Lions had 11 first downs and Clarksville had 8. The TIGERS’ football team might well be summed up in the following description given by University of Texas Coach Darrell Royal: A football player is a wonderful creature - you can criticize him but you can’t discourage him. You can defeat his team but you can't get him out of football. Might as well admit it - be you alumnus, coach, or fan - he is your personal representative on the field, your symbol of fair and hard play. He may not be an All-American, but he is an example of the American way. He is a hard-working, untiring, determined kid doing the very best he can for his school or college. And when you come out of a stadium feeling upset that your team has lost, he can make you feel mighty ashamed with just two sincerely spoken words ... We tried. 1967-68 TIGER BASKETBALL TEAMS A TEAM: Left to right: Manager Jackson, J. Cheyne, B. Cheyne, Lawson. Edrington, Brem, Ballew, Lampard, Kellam, Manager Hall. Coach Stone. A TYPICAL IN As students hurry from buses and cars, the campus awakes for a new day at 8:15. There are always absentee slips to get and in the hurry to get to classes a few accidents. As 3:35 draws near, it becomes more difficult for some to study. After the school day ends, the hall is hushed as it awaits another day. JUNIOR-SENIOR AND The long-awaited Junior-Senior Reception became a reality on April 26. The juniors worked untiringly to carry out the theme Candlelight and Roses. RECEPTION PROM 88 DECA and VOE members entertained their em- ployers. Guest speaker for the DECA Banquet was Mr. Louis B. Williams, President of Paris Junior College. Senator A. M. Aikin spoke at the VOE Banquet. Representative Neal Solomon was speaker for the annual FFA Father-Son Ban- quet. Mr. Williams also spoke at the Area Vo- cational School Barbecue. ACTIVITIES IN C.H.S. The Friday morning pep rallies were an exciting part of the year. Majorettes and cheerleaders added their usual enthusiasm. Mr. Morris was honored with a “This Is Your Life. At the close of the season, the football players presented Dr. C. B. Reed a plaque in appreciation for his devoted service to the CHS Tigers. 89 Two honest officials of Western Week were Bud Essary and John Boggess. Mac McGuire was sheriff and his law-abiding deputies were Scott Lawson, Jackie Potts, and Mar- vin Alexander. The winners of the Talent Contest were Phyllis Holley and Sharon Downes, first; Pam Bishop and Kay King, second; John Chapman, third; and John Stiles, honorable mention. The Silver Spur was a popular place to all except those who were recovering from the pie eating con- test. A year at CHS would be incomplete without the freshman and senior plays. Applying make up becomes an art as students help eaoh other prepare for the productions. The end of the year saw a rush of activities. The Key Club presented a mock trial and decoupage was the last project of one class. Ten lively CHS supporters tried out for cheerleaders. For seniors it was a day of joy but also of sadness as they heard the class will read and sat in the balcony for the last time. Then came senior pictures and measuring for cap and gown, and in November that last sentimental pep rally. On May 24, 104 graduates re- ceived their diplomas. Lan- etta Cooper was valedictorian and Anne Warthan was salu- tatorian. Mark Burtner had the highest average of the senior boys. Others in the top 10 were Joanne Waldrep, Robert Smith, Suzanne Peek, Vicki Andrews. Sherree Bean, Beth Hurt and Gayla Bartley. Georgia Dill received the Business and Professional Women's Club award. Sher- ree Bean was the recipient of the New Century Club literary award. Â
