F.H.A.Beau F.F.A. Sweetheart Homecoming Queen Patsy Flanagan The crowning of the 1959-60 Homecom- ing Queen was the outstanding event of the homecoming activities. The queen, whose identity was kept secret until the crowning, stepped forward as her name was called to be crowned by last year's queen, Doris Hall The queen was escorted by Wade Taylor. Receiving special awards in different subjects were: Linny Hubbard - Spanish Cynthia Hale - Band Patsy Flanagan - Homemaking James Hastings - Vocational Agriculture Clea Miller, elected vice president of District VIII F. T. A., will serve for the 1960-61 year. The students below senior level main' taining an A average for the past school year were Kelly Ward, Donna Skidmore, Ginnie Ree Tucker, Peggy Hughston, and Cynthia Hale. Loretta Greenhaw, assisted by Martha Burks, is the Choral Club accompanist. I, , Vv—' Cynthia Hale is presented a letter of com- mendation for a superior performance on the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test by Mr. Parks. She also received rec- ognition as a runner-up in Texas for the National Council of Teachers of English Achievement Award. The Greenhand Chapter Con- ducting Team, consisting of Will Ed Wadley, Jerry Shep- pard, Freddy Hall. Johnny Drew, Ray Tucker, Roy Wil- burn. and R. C. Davis, won first place in the district and fifth place in the area. Winning first place in the dis- trict Greenhand Skills were Eddie Nations. Floyd McGuire, and John Compton. Representing C. H. S. in the All- State Orchestra were Kelly Ward, Rollins Turner, and Cynthia Hale. At the convention Kelly was chosen die Outstanding Brass Player by the American String Teachers Associa- tion. The editor of the school paper, the Ti- ger Rag, was Maxine Conerly. Heading die various sections of the yearbook were Patsy Petty, editor; Dickie Grant, sports editor; Fred Fisher, photographer; and Conned Kay, business manager. Who's Who George Giddens, receiver of the Outstanding Athlete Award last year, received honorable mention on the All-State Football Team this year. He was also the first athlete from C. H. S. to receive honorable mention on the All- America Football Team. Jack Herrington, George Giddens. Ernest Witmer, and Mike Colbert, four of the outstanding football players for die Tiger team, were named on the All-District Team. Receiving honorable mention on the All-District Team were Ronnie Varley, Marion Lowe. Clayton Harris, and Glyn Fryar. The seniors present a going away gift to Mr. Spen- cer. At our weekly pep rallies dif- ferent members of the Quarter- back Club presented Lineman and Back of the Week Awards. Football Sweetheart, Donna Skaggs, is presented with a box of roses by the tri-captains, George Giddens, Jack Herring- ton, and Marion Lowe. Three V.I. P. 's - Representative Wright Patman, Superinten- dent R. L. Fambro, and Senator Lyndon Johnson. The Choral Club performs for the Student Council Forum. The cheerleaders put on a skit called This is Your Life, Eddie Pryor 1 Mr. Warthan of the Quarterback Club presents Donald Chesshir his football picture. These sailors are in reality majorettes in a clever sailor routine. Toni Gauer, from Switzerland, entertains with folk songs and customs of his native country. Fred Fisher referees a corn husking contest. Sheriff, Eddie Pryor, kept law and order during Western Week. Linda Terry and Rossie Ward were pro- claimed Belle and Boss of Western Week. BURRIS Captains Manage: JACK HERRINGTON ANTHONY ATHAS GEORGE GIDDENS MARION LOWE GEORGE GIDDENS Senior End 2 Year Letterman CLARKSVILLE vs. COMMERCE In the September 4 game the Clarksville Tigers started the 1959 football season off to a great start with a 16-14 victory over the Commerce Tigers. In the first half Com- merce built up a 14-0 lead and almost dominated play, but in the third quarter Clarksville took over the ball on the 35 yard line and drove 65 yards for the first touchdown. Jack Herrington scored the first touchdown and also made the extra points. After George Giddens recovered a fumble, Johnny Gullion tied the score. Mike Colbert added the extra points. Ernest Winner received the Lineman of the Week award, and Jack Herrington received the Back of the Week award. CLARKSVILLE September 18, the Idabel Warriors defeated the Clarksville Tigers 28-6. Although the Tigers threatened several times, they did not score until the third quarter. David Burgess and Gene Skaggs received the Lineman of the Week award and Donald Chessier received the Back of the Week award RONNIE VARLEY Junior Fullback 3 Year Letterman Senior Tackle 2 Year Letterman CLARKSVILLE vs. MT. VERNON September 11, die Clarksville Tigers journeyed to Mt. Ver- non, only to be defeated 24-6. Clarksville got off to a slow start and at half time were trailing 16-0. In the second half Mike Colbert completed a pass to George Giddens, who ran 58 yards to score the first Clarksville touchdown. The try for extra points failed, and the score stood 24-6. Although Clarksville fought hard, they were unable to score again. Glyn Fryar, received the Lineman of the Week award and Mike Colbert, received the Back of the Week award. MIKE COLBERT Sophomore Quarterback 2 Year Letterman CLARKSVILLE CLARKSVILLE vs. BROKEN BOW September 25, die Clarksville Tigers battered the Broken Bow defense and claimed a 14-8 victory over the Savages. In the second quarter Jack Herrington broke loose and ran 60 yards for the Tiger's first touchdown. The extra points were not made. The Savages scored their only touchdown in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter Duane Ballew took a fourth down punt and carried it back 60 yards for an apparent touchdown, but was called back on a clipping penalty. Blasts from Ronnie Varley and Johnny Gullion put the Tigers in position for Mike Colbert to score the final touchdown. The Clarksville Quarterback Club chose Ernest Witmer as Lineman of the Week” and Ronnie Varley and Duane Ballew as Backs of die Week. The score board read 24-6 when the final gun sounded October 9. The Clarksville Tigers had just upset the Winnsboro Red Raiders. Everything rolled along nip and tuck in the first quarter, but in the second quarter Donald Chessier exercised a 75 yard scoring run which brought all the Clarks- ville fans howling. In the third quarter, after a gain of 18 yards by Donald Chessier, Jack Herrington scored the second Tiger touchdown. He added his own extra points. Later Mike Col- bert scored the final 8 points. Marion Lowe received the Lineman of the Week award, and the Back of the Week award went to Jack Herrington. DAVID BURGESS Senior Halfback 2 Year Letterman CLARKSVILLE vs. ATLANTA The Clarksville Tigers started their conference games October 16, with a remarkable 44-6 victory over die Atlan- ta Rabbits. All-round teamwork paved the way for several scoring runs. Jack Herrington and Mike Colbert led in the scoring. Jack Herrington ran for 3 touchdowns and 2 conver- sions while Mike Colbert ran 2 touchdowns and passed for another 6 points. George Giddens also scored 2 conversions. In the final quarter the Rabbits completed a long pass for their only touchdown. The Lineman of the Week award went to J. E. Pollock and George Giddens. The Back of the Week award went to Jack Herrington and Mike Colbert. J. E. POLLOCK Junior End 2 Year Letterman CLARKSVILLE vs. HOOKS In the Clarksville Tiger's Homecoming game, October 23, the Hooks Hornets slipped by the Tigers with an upsetting 21-20 victory. Some say that the Tigers won in everything except the score. Ronnie Varley, who received the Back of the Week award, scored the first Tiger touchdown, and Mike Colbert added the extra points. After Hooks scored 6 points early in the second quarter. Jack Herrington scored a touchdown, and Ronnie Varley added the extra points. In the third quarter the Hornets tied the game. Johnny Gullion scored at the end of the third quarter, but the extra points were not made. With only seconds left in the game the Hooks Hornets scored the winning point. George Giddens received the Lineman of the Week award. CLARKSVILLE The Clarksville Tigers suffered a bitter defeat Friday, October 30, when their opponents, the Dekalb Bears, tallied up a score of 34-6. Marion Lowe, tackle, led the Tiger line in both offensive and defensive play. Mike Colbert, quarterback, scored the only Tiger touchdown. Although the Tigers lost, they never ceased fighting. The Quarter- back Club chose Mike Colbert and Marion Lowe as the Lineman and Back of the Week. JOHNNY GULLION Junior Halfback 1 Year Letterman ERNEST WITMER Junior Guard 2 Year Letterman CLARKSVILLE vs. PAUL PEWITT In the intense cold of the November 6 game, the Clarks- ville Tigers wrapped up an 18-8 victory over the Paul Pewitt Brahamas. In the first quarter the Brahamas scored the first touchdown and extra points. This put the Tigers on edge and they responded with a 56 yard drive with Ronnie Varley going over for die first Tiger touchdown. Trailing 8-6 in the second quarter, the Tigers put together a 65 yard attack in which Jack Herrington took the ball over for the touch- down. In the final quarter the Tigers scored 6 more points. Glyn Fryar received the Lineman of the Week award, and Mike Colbert received the Back of the Week award. CLAYTON HARRIS CLARKSVILLE Senior Tackle 1 Year Letterman A 30-6 victory over the New Boston Lions, November 13, put the Clarksville Tigers in a tie with the Dekalb Bears for second place in District 13-AA football. Ronnie Varley scored the first Tiger touchdown, and Mike Colbert added the two extra points. Soon after this the Lions scored their only touchdown, but the extra points failed. Giddens scored the extra points to make the score 16-6 at the half. In the fourth quarter the Tigers pushed 70 yards for the final 6 points.
