The plot centers around the philosophy of Martin Vanderhof, better known as Grandpa Grandpa believes that everyone should get as much fun out of life as possible. Penelope Vanderhof Sycamore, Grandpa? daughter, dabbles at writing plays and painting portraits, while Essie, Penny's married daughter, has ideas that some day she may become a great ballet dancer.
