40 THE PURPLE AND GOLD Senior Edition tion with each other, and with William Harris, Thurston Price, and Mary Lewis carrying the colors, they defeated the fourth Purple and Gold Dragon. Then, too, they placed their Queen, Her Highness Rebecca Sue Wood, on the Throne for the Thanksgiving Day Game and further elevated themselves by furnishing leaders such as Captain Howard johnson and Cecil Morgan in order that the court might win the Little Ten Championship in the contests of football. The ladies of this Court, wishing also to contribute to the achievements of this group, captured top honors in the popular pastimes of basketball in their district and later were runners-up in the sectional. Much of the success of this team may be con- tributed to Ladies Frances Hunt, Margaret Turrentine, Johnny Hicks, Martha Heflin, Ann Richardson ,and Martha Thomas. Among those who earned them- selves literary honors in this court were Lord Archibald Manning, overseer of the court's parchment, Lady Rebecca Stephens, the honored actress and songstress of the court, and Lords George Morrison and johnathon Hudson, highest ranking debaters of the day, And, last of all, through strong competition, Her Highness Queen Future appointed Lady Elizabeth Thomas to the highest position of the Court as Her Lady of Intelligence. Then, with but few of their number fallen by the wayside, they entered through the door into the great Hall of Achievement and was each presented with a chip called Diploma off the stone of Graduation. Therefore, having earned themselves honors together, they separated to give the world the benefit of their knowledge and experience. Senior Edition THE PURPLE AND GOLD 39 A 'T f i ' 49.33 N Q ' 1 X Q Long years ago, in 1937 to be exact, there lay in the distant town of Clarks- ville, Tennessee, on the beautiful avenue of Greenwood, a certain palace. Some- where within this palace was a wonderful stone known as Graduation. And so it happened that in that year of long ago a group of young knights and ladies of the court of the lovely Queen Future entered into this mysterious palace in search of this beautiful stone. Upon entering this palace of intrigue these people, under the leadership of Thurston Price, Elizabeth Council, and Martha Norris, encountered the fierce dragon of the Purple aml Gold! They fought the most desperate 'battle in history with this monster and cut off 221 of its subscriptionsg thereby earning for themselves third place in the Royal Tournament of this con- test with the Purple and Gold Dragon, and obtaining for themselves the right to advance to the second adventure for the stone of Graduation. 9 Then came the second adventure of this fearless and distinguished group. Having gained confidence from their first encounters, they eagerly set out to ob- tain the stone. But alas! Misfortune was brewing. Purple arm' Gold Dragon's son, Purple and Gold II, had heard of his father's defeat and, being more fierce than his father, set out to avenge him. Again under the capable leadership of William Harris, Martha Norris, and Robert Norris this brave group defeated the monster by cutting off even more of his subscriptions than they had the previous year, and earned themselves second honors in the Royal Tournament of Purple' and Gold Dragon. 3 Then came the third part of this adventure. Going always forward, as in the two years before, this group encountered the fierce tribes of Freshman, Soph- omore, and Senior. The unfailable spirit and determination of this party, with Allen McGregor, Annie Manning, and George Morrison at their lead, triumphed over their opponents. They not only won first honors in the Purple ana' Golrl Tournament, but won the right to place upon the golden Throne of Honor their Queen, Her Highness Rebecca Sue Wood, for the annual Home-coming Game. 4 Then, as the story goes, the group emerged upon the fourth, final, and most glorious adventure of their career. Through their whole-hearted coopera-
