Under the direction of Mr. Felix Michell the band attended three festi- vals, the Northwest District at Paris, the State at Hot Springs, and Bi-State ar Fort Smith. Some advanced members of the band attended the District Clinic at Van Buren and the State Clinic at Russellville. The Beta Club is a non-secret, leadership service club for high school students of America. It's purpose is to encourage effort, to promote character, to stimulate achievement, to cultivate leadership qualities, to reward merit, and to encourage and assist students to continue their educa- tion after high school graduation. Members are chosen by the following standards: 1. Good mentality and character 2. Creditable achievement 3- Comrnendable attitude The Beta Club is a national organization and sponsors an educational fund. The local chapter sponsors and writes the school paper The Panther . Last year at the annual convention our chapter won first prize in the talent contest. The Student Council helps make the rules and assists in helping keep order in the school. This is done through close contact and cooperation with the student body. SENIOR HIGH GIRLS' BASKETBALL At the beginning of the 1948-1949 basketball season the prospects did not look too bright. Only three lettermen, Clark, Walker, and Shell returned from last year. But as the weeks passed Cochran, Farris, and Parks, turned out to be starters. Also Thornton, Black- ard, and Rannels came along. Then Kelly entered school, and of course, we still had Bunch, Rachel, and Thompson. With the excellent coaching of Bill Methen , the girls had a successful season, winning some four-fifths of their games. They won 16yout of 20.
