lso[ ■ d . •? I CLU PROPERTY OP THE LIBKAEY OP VIEGINI ' Now hear this! Now hear this! All hands on deck in prepara¬ tion for a seafaring voyage on “The Golden Leaf” through Clarksville High School. The waters of the Buggs’ Island Lake, right in our midst, were an inspiration for us to choose a “nautical theme” for our yearbook. We hope the moments we have captured in word and pic¬ ture will bring back memories to you—memories of the “fair- weather days’ as well as the “stormy ones” across the waters of Clarksville High. We, the annual staff of 1954, dedicate this volume of “THE GOLDEN LEAF” to Clarksville High School. Here we have shared joy, love, failure, work and play. All of these have been because of you and the spirit you have embedded in us. Regardless of the years that pass, we ll never forget our days spent here, and always we 11 strive to make you proud of us. 3 MRS. W. T. HUGHES Longwood College History, Civics, Government MR. COMMANDERS Margaret, Jean, Jerry, and Peggy 13 September, 1950 • ? ip 6 As Father Time has carried us across the “four seas” of high school life, we look back over those years with pleasant memories. We set sail on the first sea of high school as forty-one “sailors.” At first we found the going rough, for we had to battle the storms of chang¬ ing classes and get accustomed to having sev¬ eral teachers. But we soon got on course and went along with the various activities. Although we could not boast of our boys on the football squad, several of our girls were on the sidelines as cheerleaders. Carole Wingfield and Jerry Rhoads were our new crew members that year, but both left before the year ended, along with Joe Johnson. We climaxed the year with a weiner roast at the old ball park. September, 1951 We entered our sophomore year as “ensigns.” Much to our disappointment we learned that several of our sailors had become sea-sick and were left on the shore, but in their places we had nine additions to our crew. We began the year under the sponsorship of Captain Hite and Cap¬ tain Propst with Charlotte Cooper and Patricia Watkins as our fine presidents. We were proud of Rufus Parrish that year be¬ cause he was the only “ensign” to boast a “jersey.” And, yes, we were equally proud of eleven of our crew when they docked at the Beta Club. Then with the approach of October, we began our plans for a Halloween party. At the last minute the basement of the Presbyterian Church was alive with cornstalks, pumpkins, and hob¬ goblins. Remember, too, how proud we were when several of our girls served as waitresses at the Junior-Senior Banquet? Again we ended the year with a picnic at the old-ball park. September, 1952 We sailed into our junior year, having been promoted to “lieutenants.” Since we were now only twenty-seven in number we were joined into one class with Captain Hughes as our spon¬ sor and with Charlotte Cooper at the helm. We started the year by sponsoring a baby con¬ test to raise money for our Junior-Senior Ban¬ quet. The contest was a tremendous success. With the approach of December, we began gala plans for our Christmas party at the Country Club. With the assistance of Captain Hughes, we had a very enjoyable party. Then we ordered our rings and waited impatiently to receive them in the Spring. After many “ooh’s” and “ah’s” and with some brief confusion, a few stern glances sent us again on our way. In April, the gay sea¬ son of the “Mardi Gras,” we pulled into port at old New Orleans. All “lieutenants” were on deck for an unforgettable Junior-Senior Ban¬ quet. Having struggled through final exams, we put out for shore, singing at the Baccalaureate Service in June. 14 September, 1953 We had reached the highest rank of “com¬ mander” and were the all-knowing seniors! How we had longed for this year; but when it arrived, we were a bit sad. We were only twenty-four in number—the smallest class in several years. Our members had drifted out with the tide or had lagged behind, but we were very glad to wel¬ come on board Althea Ash, Graham Ellixson, Emily Isom, and Carolyn Smith. With Sherwood Strum in command and Captain Hughes, we weighed anchor and checked our compass point, “Everclimbing.” Peggy Yancey, the capable Beta Club presi¬ dent; Patricia Watkins, talented president of the Dramatic Club; Weston Walker, S. C. A. presi¬ dent; and B. F. Beasley, leader of the F. F. A.; proved staunch and sea-worthy. Without the un¬ tiring efforts of Charlotte Cooper, The Golden Leaf would not have arrived at Ports Deadline and Success on schedule. Likewise, Joyce Crudup stood by to weather the storm of editing The Tattler. The ’53 football season caught us up in the spirit of that gay and colorful sport, and we cheer¬ ed our own Jerry Yancey—lone “commander” on the team. Our spirit of excitement reached its peak in the victory of our second annual home¬ coming game. Everyone worked hard to make this homecoming the best ever. From our en¬ thusiasm burst forth a parade of clever and elab¬ orate floats. The occasion was climaxed b y the presentation of queenly Joyce Crudup and her home-coming court. Grandma’s Best Years represented our honest efforts at acting. Many gruelling, but fun-filled hours of practice resulted in two nights of senior stardom. On Career Day in Boydton we met with all the other seniors in the county to help us to chart our courses in life. In February the seniors and juniors went to Richmond to visit a session of the General As¬ sembly. With the approach of spring, the seniors were honored guests at the annual Junior-Senior Ban¬ quet-Port Starlight. In all the loveliness of spring, Jerry Yancey and Joyce Crudup reigned as king and queen of May Day. Their royal highnesses and their court were entertained in the enchanting world of Mother Goose. The days passed quickly, and before we knew it, we arrived at Port Graduation. We realized only too soon t hat now we would be leaving all our friends. Yes, shipmates, our voyage together has ended. Now, we must each look beyond the horizon and set a course steady toward the fu¬ ture-each in his own separate way. 15 BABY COMMANDERS” jJj 4 l_ frlwM CAST Mrs. Abbott, . . Sadie. Joyce Abbott. .
