Clarkston’s Above: Preparing for a decisive home meet with Andover, Joe Crosby, John Hitchcock, Rick Dancey, and Thor Olaffson review a few last minute suggestions before starting time. Cross Country is a grueling sport that combines distance running with speed and endurance. There are few people that would go out into the elements day after day to run two and one-half miles across open country, but those that do represent the Clarkston Cross Country Team. The squad was “most cooperative” this year according to first year head coach Errol Solley. The harriers posted an overall record of four wins and three losses, two of the losses by slim margins. At the conclusion of the season, Thor Olafsson was voted the most valuable runner by his teammates. Above: The tension builds among the competitors at the starting line before the gun. Linksmen Win Title At Regional Contest Clarkston’s Varsity Golf Squad enjoyed its first successful undefeated dual match schedule this season. Highlights of the year proved many as the linksmen snapped a 40 match victory streak that West Bloomfield had established, won the regional tournament held at Atlas Valley, shared the league championship, and travelled to the state meet in Midland. The current record stands at 143, which was shot at the Wolves home course against the state champions West Bloomfield. Lee Booker was voted the most valuable golfer for his feats on the golf course which included both a hole-in-one and medalist honors at the regional competition. The surrounding golfers were all instrumental in posting an 18-0 season record. Above: Hitting through trees can mean trouble but not for Don Short. Below left: Kirk Hart, finishing his fourth year of varsity golf, is noted for his consistant playing ability. Below right: Bill Bildstein shows good form by keeping his head down on his follow through. 12
