Cross Country is a grueling sport that combines distance running with speed and endurance. There are few people that would go out into the elements day after day to run two and one-half miles across open country, but those that do represent the Clarkston Cross Country Team. The squad was “most cooperative” this year according to first year head coach Errol Solley. The harriers posted an overall record of four wins and three losses, two of the losses by slim margins. At the conclusion of the season, Thor Olafsson was voted the most valuable runner by his teammates. Above: The tension builds among the competitors at the starting line before the gun. Below: Clarkston maintains an early lead as Joe Crosby, Gerry Adams, Thor Olaffson, John Hitchcock, and Brian Bissell push on for victory. 10 Harriers Run on—and on—and on . . . Below: Kim Hamilton and Miki Reginek wait at the finish line with Mr. Solley and the Andover coaches. 11 Linksmen Win Title At Regional Contest Clarkston’s Varsity Golf Squad enjoyed its first successful undefeated dual match schedule this season. Highlights of the year proved many as the linksmen snapped a 40 match victory streak that West Bloomfield had established, won the regional tournament held at Atlas Valley, shared the league championship, and travelled to the state meet in Midland. The current record stands at 143, which was shot at the Wolves home course against the state champions West Bloomfield. Lee Booker was voted the most valuable golfer for his feats on the golf course which included both a hole-in-one and medalist honors at the regional competition. The surrounding golfers were all instrumental in posting an 18-0 season record. Above: Hitting through trees can mean trouble but not for Don Short. Below left: Kirk Hart, finishing his fourth year of varsity golf, is noted for his consistant playing ability. Golf Team Outstrokes All Opponents Under their new coach Jim Chamberlain, the Junior Varsity Golf Squad finished their season with a perfect 8-0 record. This record was the result of hard work and long hours of practice at the golf course. Cindy Booker, the first girl to compete in a formerly all boys’ sport, was the most valuable golfer posting a season average of 40.8. All of the J.V. squad are anxious for the next season and a shot at the varsity team. Left: Russ Reekwald picks up his bag to move onto the next tee. The squad was in good physical condition when the season opened and had high spirits for the oncoming games. The Wolves were beaten in their first two outings but bounced back to upset a strong Bloomfield Hills Andover. Other victories were recorded over Clarenceville and Milford. League and county honors were given to Bill Svetkoff, Rich Butler, Mark Warren, Bill Hamilton, Dan Taylor, Chuck Chamarro, and Dave Foster. Team honors went to Mark Warren and Brian Leak. The annual powderpuff game found the juniors tromping the seniors with the help of female Heisman trophy nominee Cindy Booker. The junior coaches were Mr. Jim Chamber-lain, Mr. Richard Moscovic, and Mr. Jim Wenger while the seniors were mentored by Mr. Toby Carter, Mrs. Richard Dennis, and Mr. George White. Halftime ceremonies included the Powderpuff court parade, featuring King Dave Cinader and his worthy attendants Tim Lekander, Craig Moore, Rick Butler, and Bill Svetkoff. One of their finest efforts was to help organize an ala carte lunch line. At semester break the Council was faced with the problem of a graduating president, Bill Latoza. They solved this problem by electing a new president, Tim Lekander. Other officers were Mike Saile, vice-president; Claudia Allen, secretary; and Ann Brown, treasurer. Newly appointed president Tim Lekander, a junior, reviews a constitutional stipulation which states that only seniors qualify to be president. This year’s previous president. Bill Latoza, graduated at the semester and therefore had to give up his office. The newspaper, renamed “The Good Tymeshas a new advisor, Mrs. Linda Denstaedt. Many members of the staff started the year as novice reporters. Also new to the “Good Tymes” is the use of pictures in the type of printing process now used. The yearbook got off to a good start this year but suffered a major loss of staff at the semester which, in turn, caused missing some deadlines. Above: Mrs. Denstaedt shows Dave Arpoika how to make an exact stencil for the new printing porcess used by the “Good Tymes” staff. They will be going to Nassau, Bahamas in April with ninety other Seniors, as well as participating in the graduation exercises and the festivities to follow. Klaus Matthias is a senior this year. He comes from Niedenaudorf, Germany. Klaus is presently living with Jim and Dennis Loba. As for a future career he has no plans. He is currently involved with the spring track team. Klaus plans to stay until the end of July. Pierre Jacques is also a senior this year and he will enter a university in France next year. Pierre lives with Mr. and Mrs. Robert Arend. His hometown in France is Paris. Pierre’s hobbies are skiing and dramatics and he has been very involved with both the ski club and the drama department this year. Pierre has been seriously involved with the drama and speech departments this year. He has appeared in several plays, including ‘The Three Fairy Godmothers,” and ‘Town That Couldn’t Have Christmas.” Above: Pierre takes a breather after a run at Pine Knob Ski Lodge with the CHS Ski Club. Through making signs and conducting assemblies they have been able to bring out the enthusiasm and spirit that every school needs. With the help of their sponsor, Mr. James Wenger, the Pep Club was also able to have a dance. Left: Debbie Burnell helps Pep Qub paint signs for the last home game. Under Miss Joanne Paradiso’s sponsorhsip, the girls took deprived children Christmas shopping, went caroling at Pine Knob Rest Home, put on the Christmas dance, and made Easter eggs for orphans. The two attempts to put on the Sadie Hawkins dance was one project that fell through. The president was Sue Evans; secretary, Karen Ellert; and treasurer, Pam Hool. Guys also lend a hand as Sue Evans passes tape to Dean Calkins. 1 - y y Making signs before a dance, Pam Hool feels, is an important duty. Above: Karen Elert proves that setting up is no fun. Below: Miss Paradiso is always around to give advice. 35 G.A.A. Provides Female Recreation The 1971-1972 Girls’ Athletic Association program is held every Friday after school. This year the sponsors were Mrs. Jane Miller and Miss Kathy DeArmond. Jane Weaver took the position of president for the second year. The girls participated in such activities as basketball, volleyball tournaments, as well as sponsoring a dance for a fundraising project. Judy Swanson anxiously waits for someone to hit the ball to her. Above: Nancy Craft calls out the service just before hitting the ball to the opposing team. Below: Sccryl Stickley waits for her team to serve the ball and continue the game play. 36 37 Office Experience Greatly Assists Staff Students involved in office experience classes provide numerous benefits for the teachers and fellow students. Their work includes correcting and typing tests, filing, typing schedules, running off hand-out sheets, and typing programs for school plays and other various school activities. This class is designed to give people who desire to get into secretarial work experience and a general background in the field. The class is under the guidance of Mrs. Becker. As Greg took the field, he was followed by majorettes Rachel Byers, Debbie Helvey, Chris Lehman and Becky Smith, who, in turn, were led by Dawn Willson. All of the various bands were directed by returning conductor Keith Sipos. The band also attended the District Solo and Ensemble Festival held at Oakland University, and two members became eligible for the state competition. The band also sponsored bake sales and car washes to help finance summer band camp. Above: The marching band, in a salute to television, spells out “Pepsi”. Events Recalled by Debate Forensics The debate team compiled a league record of 25 wins and 9 losses. The team finished fourth in the Wayne-Oak-land Debate Association and second in the Tri-County League. The team won their district and went to the final round of the regionals before losing to Wayne-Memorial High School. Forensics is divided into numerous categories, each being an individual event where one member from each school opposes a member of another school. t Resolve: that the Jury System in the U.S. be significantly changed is this year’s debate topic. Right: Rehearsing for multiple reading is Buffy McFarland and Paul Fellows. 44 The graduating seniors from this year’s debate and forensics team are from left to right: Mike Pryomski, Mary Ann Northcote and Vicki Johnson. Missing from the picture is Dawn Willson. 45 Victory for Wolves’ Matmen in Tourney Coach Dick Moscovic’s matmen came on strong this year to win the League Meet and an overall second place among their opponents. Rick Detkowski had an impressive season with a record of 29-4 and was voted most outstanding wrestler by a concensus of the League coaches. First year grappler Rod Latimer proved an asset with 4 individual tournament victories and a nomination for the League’s most valuable wrestler. Others winning league championships besides Detkowski and Latimer were Dean Smith, Ken Johnson, and Brian Gerber. Grapplers Gain Varsity Experience The Junior Varsity Wrestlers, coached by Toby Carter, finished 4-1 in the league. According to Coach Carter, “If there had been a separate title in the league, the J.V. would have been No. 1Still they were able to win six of their nine meets. Some of the wrestlers on J.V. had wrestled Varsity at one time or another. Among these were Scott Beseau, Dan Golding, Greg Johnson, and Bill Rondo. Throughout the season these four proved to be Coach Carter’s most consistent. Above: Dan Millward uses a pin combination to subdue his opponent and add another match toward a junior varsity victory. League Title Taken By Hungry Wolves The Clarkston Wolves Started out the 1971-72 basketball season with a new face and many victories. The new face was that of Coach Dave McDoanld. Mr. McDonald, formerly a coach of the freshman team at Clarkston Junior High School, began his first year at C.H.S. coaching varsity basketball and teaching physical education and biology. The Wolves were able to end the season in the same way, by capturing the title of Wayne-Oakland League Champions. Mr. Bihl brought the team through the year with an impressive record of 9-3. One of the members of the J.V. team, Gary Mason, was sent up to Varsity. This year’s team members were: Steve Philpott, Steve Mauti, Daryl Brittian,Tom Anderson, Ed Curry, Marc Harris, Chuck Jorgensen, Chuck Olsen, Rod Rumsey, Dirk Fenely, Louis Pope, Scott Newhart, Mike Dennis, Ken Foster, and Dave Whitehead. Clarkston’s Wolvettes went undefeated in the league with a record of 5-0. High scorers for the 1971-72 season were seniors Anyce Birchett with 110 points and Kathy Smith with 79 points. Big rebounders included junior Pam Mihalcheon with a total of 153 and senior Jane Weaver with 95. Saying good-by to the team are seniors Anyce Birchett, Jane Weaver, Kathy Smith, and Jeanne Dome. Looking forward to another year of basketball are juniors Jan Johnson, Pam Mihalcheon, Judy Swanson, Carol Bee-man and Desi Simkins. Senior Debbie Squirers served as manager for the girls. Below: Buff McFarlands shoots from the key. Miss DeArmond’s Girls Hard work and a lot of enthusiasm were the key factors that made the Girls’ Junior Varsity Basketball team so successful this year. Led by Coach Kathy DeArmond the girls’ record stood a 6-3. “Heighth was on our side this year,” commented Coach DeArmond. High scorer for the year was Jane Soulby with 45 points. Captaining the team were junior Yvonne Navarre and sophomore Buff McFarland. Pat Dean served as manager. Other team members included Billie Carrol, Hazel Geoit, Karen Molter, Sonia Mills, Toni Waterbury, Sheryl Stickley, and Paula Speace. Congratulations ladies on a fine season. Cheerleader Spirit Once again this year the Varsity Cheerleaders were able to attend the annual International Cheerleading foundation Camp at Easter Michigan. Besides just attending the camp, they were able to bring home the 1st. place title. The Varsity Squad members are Debi Willits, Kathy Ronk, Sue Surre, Jan Easton, Kim Blasey, Alice Marshall, and Vicki Hart. The JV Squad also did a fine job this year. The squad members are Diane Rizzuto, Nancy Riddle, Deb Sartell, Angie Kraud, Kim Hamilton, Paula Ragatz, Debbie Gibbs, Judy Jervis, and Mickey Reginek. The JV squad got to ride through town during the Homecoming Parade. 60 Pays Off in Victory Left: Varsity Cheerleaders lead the Wolves’ fans in a sideline cheer while the team drives down the floor.
