NJ 'Q' Allan Peterson Kelly Burnette Head of Science Department Science Department Science in the Clarkston High School can be a continuous experience from grades seven through twelve. Science in the seventh through the ninth grade is designed to give the terminal student a course of study that will broaden his intellectual outlook on the every day events that science has to offer the individual. Biology will take the student into more detail in the fields of plant and animal life and the relationship they have to each other. Chemistry provides functional knowledge concern- ing the composition of matter and the chemical and physical changes that occur in matter, while physics is concerned with the functional understanding of matter and energy. William Owen Mrs. Harriet Anderson It is generally agreed that a public school educa- tion is to train the student to meet the problems of life. It would be hard for a person to go through life without using mathematics at one time or another. A general knowledge of arithmetic is necessary just to solve the problems that arise in everyday life. All of us will someday face the prob lems of buying a home, budgeting our income, bank- ing, and figuring income tax-just to name a few. It is the purpose of our Junior High mathematics courses to train each student to solve the arithme- tic problems usually faced in everyday life. The professions and skilled trades require a knowledge of mathematics beyond arithmetic. Our Senior High program, in addition to reinforcing the junior high arithmetic, presents the mathematics required for college and the skilled trades. David Randall Mel Vaara tgp, 'i f ,-7-. When we study literature, various authors and poets tell us something to inform us, to make us consider an idea, or to entertain us with humor- ous, sad, or exciting situations. We learn to SXPPGSS Our OWI1 thoughts correctly and clearly by studying grammar and punctua- tion. Through reports, speeches, discussions, and work on the Wolf Cry or the Hilltopper we get the practice so necessary to buildglf-confidence in the oral and written exchange of ideas and information. The things we do and use may vary. One day we may write business letters, and another day, use the tape recorder. The object, however, is always the same--- effective and constructive communication, the key to our progress in the past and in the future. We want our students to know that these things are the results of the labors of our foresighted ancestors and that if we want these things to endure, we must keep ourselves informed and be as willing to work for this cause as they were. The curriculum requires the successful completion of five courses o ere . For the student on the general curriculum, the commercial courses help to prepare the stu- dent for the business activities of home and personal life. They include legal information, writing and typing letters, and keeping personal accounts and records. Business also enters the col lege preparatory curriculum. The courses assist the student in typing term papers, manuscripts, letters, managing money, and many times provide a skill for part-time employment. Members of the council include five outstanding students from each grade in the high school. They have been very active this year, holding meetings once weekly, attending League Student Council monthly, and attending the Student Council Clinic this fall at Ann Arbor. Their largest projects were sponsoring several assemblies and pre- senting a scholarship to an outstanding senior. In order to do this, they sponsor an annual all-school carnival in the spring. One topic this year was resolved, that the United States should adopt the essential features of the British system of education. There were two teams: an affirmative which defended this topic, and a negative which attacked it. On each team there were two speakers. Each speak- er had a ten minute speech and a five minute speech. The speakers gave facts, evidence and reasoning to support their positions. At the end of the debate, a judge who had taken notes bn the arguments presented decided which team won. Opportunity was offered to all who wished to participate in humorous reading, interpretative reading, declamation, oratory, and extempore speaking. A local contest was held in the school for each division, and winners went on to represent the school in the district contest with other league schools. Winners of the both second and first place in each event at the district contest entered the regional contest held in May. The spring of 1959 found many of the students who represented Clarkston at last year's district and regional meetings back again to insure a successful season. The law of supply and demand determines the value of everything, if the quantity available is small and the demand is great, the price will be high. The most valuable stamp was issued by British Guiana. It's value has increased from one cent to more than 5100, 000. Certain pennies still in circulation are valued at S30 dollars or more. Senior Chorus This year's choir, under the direction of Mrs. Peterson, was engaged in many fine public performances such as a combined band and choral concert highlighting the Christmas season. Glory To God,In The Highest , Birthch.y of A King , The Heavens Are Telling , and O Holy Night , were among numbers presented. With the help of the drama department, the pageant The Perfect Carol , depicting the origin of the song Silent Night , was staged. The Hallelujah .Chorus provided a grand finale for the evening's performance. League chorus concerts and assemblies were presented during the month of February. Numbers included in these events were Senorita's Serenade , Almighty God of Our Fathers , Were You There?' , Lids Rose , Will I Ever Tell You? , and selections from Oklahoma , Our musical appreciation has been enhanced by a new R. C. A. stereophonic record player. We are able to use tape, binaural and stereophonic records. Attendance at several Broadway musicals, including Ballets U. S. A. and L' il Abner ,has given us an opportunity to broaden our musical experiences. Our spring musical was the highlight of the year, as it gave everyone an opportunity to gain stage experience. Many of our students provided solos and ensembles throughout the year for plays, assemblies, clubs and banquets. Each year we provide music for the baccaleaureate service. Much effort was put forth for a splendid showing in all activities this past year. , ,W , A. L 1 1 . He must spend hours upon hours in developing the fundamental skills of basketball. At C.H.S. we have a full slate of teams in participation. We hope the brief schedule listed below will help to give our future players training toward better basketball. November 15th through March 6th -- 75 practices -- 60 games -- 5 teams -- 64 players -- 5 coaches -- 7 managers -- 36 cheerleaders -- 30 wins -- 29 losses -- 6 pep meetings -- practices Monday through Saturday. Racket Squad ' The Racket Squad is a comparatively new group at Clarkston High. It had its beginning in 1955 under the direction of Mrs. Wilkinson and serves the purpose of providing a pep club for the school. One of its objectives is to send the cheerleaders to camp. In order to do this, the group sponsors the homecoming celebration and a spring dance each year. With pins, banners, pom-poms and lots of good old fashion yelling, the Racket Squad of Clarkston High School helps keep up the school spirit for the Clarkston Wolves. a ?
