9 HILLTOPPER 56 CLARKSTON HIGH SCHOOL Presented By The JOURNALISM CLASS Dedication It is with sincerity and appreciation that the Journalism Class dedicates the Hilltopper of the year nineteen hundred and fifty-six to Mr. Dominic Mauti. During his years of teaching at Clarkston High, Mr. Mauti has been understanding and has made learning interesting to all who have had the opportunity of knowing him. As Basketball Coach, he has helped to promote our school to high standards of sportsmanship. Hall 1955 FOOTBALL FEATURES Wolves Climax Successful Season Because of the size of the players and the amount of experience, the outlook for 1955 was dim; however when the smoke had settled after nine inter-town battles, Clarkston had emerged victoriously in seven contests losing only two. They also ranked second in the Wayne-Oakland County League. This is an impressive record for most any team, particularly for ours. Let's review the team. It was one of the lightest Clarkston teams ever fielded. Offensively the team averaged 148 pounds per player, 137 pounds in the backfield, and 154 pounds in the line per man. The team was small in size and number. There were only five returning lettermen from the championship team of 1954 to compose the 22 man squad. Struck by injuries, the team ended with only 18 on its roster. To offset these handicaps, however, a tremendous team spirit and desire to learn was present. As coach Hintz said, these boys learned more in one year than any other team I've coached has learned in any single year, plus they had spirit. The wolves were led this year by co-captains Gary Robertson, tackle, and Clyde Kizer, right halfback. Clyde received the honor of All State honorable mention. Chuck Passage, end, also received honorable mention in All State. 1955 a Year of Firsts This past football season marked two more firsts in school history. One, we played on our own lighted football field. This new field was brought about by the cooperation of many civic minded people in our community, many hard working students, and the Board of Education. The second new experience was homecoming. This year we had homecoming queens chosen by the football team, a parade, and a game. All climaxed by a successful homecoming dance. This was the start of a great tradition, the reunion of old class-mates. 60 Varsity Football Row I: E. Glennie, G. Nelson, L. Parks, G. Robertson, C. Kizer G. Lang, D. Swayne, B. Shanks 65 Basketball For the first time in four years, Clarkston High School's Basketball team finished below second place in the Wayne-Oakland County League. The main reason was the lack of height on the floor. The win-loss record was 6 wins and 10 losses, giving us a tie for fourth place. Senior Clyde Kizer, the amazing little athlete with a very good Scholastic average as well, played the part of a leader for the team. Clyde has a great future ahead of him and Clarkston has a task in trying to fill his shoes. Senior Doug Fortin was one of our big men on the floor-all six feet of him. He improved a great deal toward the middle of the season. Junior George Lang led the team in scoring, and was honored by being named to the Wayne-Oakland County League’s first team as a guard. Sophomore Leroy Parks, the phenomenal dribbler, was the second highest scorer on the team and received many words of praise from our opponents. Sophomore Dick Lippert filled in very good under the basket. He is a growing boy and we have high hopes for him. Senior Bill Shanks and Junior Chuck Passage were the wolves main utilities men and they came through with commendable performances. Junior Fred Vess was the team moral booster and the team's best hustler. Juniors Bob Rader and John Holser rounder out the Varsity Rosters. The Wolves had great spirit and driving power and were backed by enthusiastic students right down to the last game. The games were always close even though the record is unbalanced. D.
