The 1953 Hilltopper Presented by The Graduating Class of Clarkston High School Clarkston, Michigan Foreword: In presenting this, our 1953 issue of the Hilltopper we are striving to tell the story of Progress. Its meaning to us, as students, and as future members of our progressive community. In our own humble manner, we have chosen this theme, deeply grateful to our parents and all citizens of this community who have given so unstintingly of their time and efforts, and who have certainly sacrificed greatly in their own personal requirements to afford up the finer things of life. May we prove worthy of them as we too progress. Dedication In deep appreciation of the many fine things that Clarkston has meant and will continue to mean to us, we the graduating class of 1953, humbly dedicate this issue of the Hilltopper. It is our fervent hope that the trust placed in us as future citizens, will only add to the laurels of this community. And that we feel the full responsibility of our share in the progress of its schools, its businesses and its civic life. 2 Class of 1953 Walking Down Memory Lane... These pictures tell the story of our community before the start of the twentieth century. To us, the class of 1953, these pictures seem strange. We recognize certain landmarks, but the way of life, we cannot imagine. Time demands progress. And, like our town, we too make steady progress toward a better tomorrow. Rural Mail Carriers The Lane Begins In 1840 a school was built on the corner of Main Street and Orion Road and was of fair size and of planks. The first teacher was Clara C. Anderson and the pupils were the Holcomb, Vliet and Wheeler children. Later school was held in the old Richardson House. In 1860 district school was held in the house now known as the Gulick house on Buffalo Street, between Church Street and Sashabaw road. That school had about 90 pupils and had a reputation of getting out of hand frequently until taken hold of by a Mr. Taylor. In 1850 Nelson W. Clark erected a large two-story frame house on the West shore of Parke Lake, which he designed for an academy. Was later sold to a Prof. Cochran, who opened a select school, which he conducted for several years. He, assisted by Nathan Vliet set out the trees which are still growing in the yard. About 1862 a deal was made with Prof. Cochran and Nelson Clark whereby the property was sold to the District for a Public School. 4 We Progress In 1911. . . STORY OF ANNUAL PRODUCTION In presenting this annual to the student body of Clarkston High, we, the annual staff, wish to express our sincere thanks to our advisor, Mr. Heimburger, for his competent advice and assistance throughout the entire program. The gathering of materials, pictures and ideas, copy and other valuable information, advertisements and layout, represents hours of toil, made pleasant by the kindly interest he offered unstintingly. It is our final wish, that this annual affords all at Clarkston High, a finer sense of the values our school represents, and that after viewing your copy, that you will derive the self-same pleasure that we take in presenting it to you. 32 Student Council Top Row (left to right): Harold Cameron, Tom Bullen, John Bennett.
