Before you start turning any pages, I want you to meet “Willie Wolf. “Willie is lining up his course to take you on a journey through the pages of this book which will disclose many of the happy moments and exciting events of this year. “Willie is an excellent guide and you’ll find him popping up now and then on various pages so you won’t get lost. Incidentally, our athletic teams are called the “Clarkston Wolves” and that’s how we happened to choose “Willie as our mascot. May he keep alive forever, in our memories, our own Clarkston High and the “Spirit of ‘47. 01SOOI1 Clarkston Public School In 1930 our modern Clarkston High and Grade School was built with Mr. D. M. Winn acting as Superintendent. The first class to graduate from this school was the “Class of 31.” Since then much has been done to make our school one of the most up to date and prominent schools in Oakland County. A new movie projector and public address system was purchased a few years ago which have proved to be useful additions. A very active athletic association is another one of our achievements with football, basketball, baseball, track and golf included. The music department is well represented in a modern band and chorus. The Home Economics and Shop classes are also filled to capacity. At present two busses and several private cars bring in students from Waterford, Drayton, Sashabaw and Springfield. The faculty numbers 19 this year with 500 students enrolled— approximately 275 high school students and 225 in grade school. Who has successfully guided the Senior Class of 1947 through the year and whose patience and effort have helped make this annual a worthwhile project, we sincerely and respectfully dedicate our 1947 HILLTOPPER com ADMINISTRATION HILLTOPPER STAFF ® FACULTY • SENIORS • JUNIORS • SOPHOMORES • FRESHMEN • JR HIGH • ELEMENTARY • ORGANIZATIONS • ATHLETICS • nnmniisMon MR. The Juniors started out the year with majority in Student Council, and they also made a noticeable enlargement on all of the sport activities. A Carnival Dance was put on by the Juniors in November, This was the first dance of its kind ever held in Clarkston High School, The Junior play, “Snafu” was given five weeks later than expected on May 2. It was directed by Mrs. Clark and the student director was Shirley Crosby. All of the cast showed unusual ability in acting out their parts in this modern comedy. The Junior Senior Banquet was held May 9 and was enjoyed by all. The Juniors took an important part in school activities this year and they hope to do even more next year when they become “Mighty Seniors”. CLASS Of '18 Top Row L. To R.- D. Sutphen, D. Doyle, G. Although they’re expected (and usually are) to be the black sheep of Clarkston, we strive to do our best. We sponsored the Valentine Dance, “Heartbeat,” and I am glad to say we made a good profit on it. We owe our thanks to Mary Jane Beattie and Joice Carte for their splendid art work for decorations. It consisted of a bass, two clarinets, a trumpet, a trombone, and a conductor. They afforded many good laughs. The Chorus part of the program consisted mostly of Christmas songs. Stardust was one of the most popular numbers. A sextet was featured also. The members are as follows Mary Secan, Joyce Moore, Barbara Tarlton, Pat Hoyt, Verlee VanCamp and Sally Knitter. “The Old Lamplighter ” aroused much applause when the quartet sang it. Martin Wager, Ida May Beattie, Barbara Boadway and Denny Warden were the members. There was a good audience and all who attended had a very enjoyable evening. The spring Band Concert was held May 29. The only score was made in the first period by Goodrich on a screen pass on about the Clarkston twenty yard line. The final score was 6-0, favor of Goodrich. The second game was played at Log Cabin in the hot sun on a very dry field. Longair, trying to prevent the only score of the game, was lost to the team as he broke his collarbone. Clarkston also lost this game 6-0. Clarkston played its first home game with Auburn Heights. For the first time in the season the team showed some offensive play, as they tied at 12 all in the first half. Heights poured on the power in the last half, with 18 points. Davison scored the final tally in the last period, making the final score 30-18. The following Friday, Clarkston played at Fraser. This was a good game defensively, but the gold clad boys came out on the short end of another 6-0 score, as Fraser pushed over a tally in the last period of the game. The fifth game saw us playing the champs from Big Beaver. This was another exciting game as a half-back from Big Beaver ran back two of Davison’s punts for touchdowns. The Beavers rang up another counter to make the score 18-0. The sixth game was played on Clarkston’s muddy, rainsoaked fields. In the mud and slop the teams battled three and a half periods without a score. Bloomfield finally pushed over a touchdown for the only score of the game, besides the extra point, making the final score; Bloomfield 7, Clarkston, 0. The final engagement of the season was played at Lake Orion. This was the most interesting game of the year, as Clarkston came back from a 13 point deficit to win. In the first half, Orion counted 13 points within five minutes. Then Clarkston started rolling and made the score 13-12, by two touchdowns in the second quarter by McGee and Smith. Going into the second half trailing by one point, Clarkston counted. Orion was held scoreless, with Clarkston on top, for the first time this season, 18-13. The season record was one win, none in league play, and six losses. Clarkston scored a total of 36 points to 86 scored by opponents upon them. The Orion game rang down the curtain of High School football for Jack Hagen, Harold Smith, and Glen Davison, who graduate this year. foomi Top Row--L. to R --D. Allen, R. Johnson, F. Tower, R. Mr. Francis has been with us for a number of years but this is Mr. Boyns’ first year. Whenever you walk in the door on a cold windy day and feel the warmth inside; whenever you walk down through the clean halls; whenever you attend school activities at night; remember the men who do these jobs and keep our school warm. Going to school would be very uncomfortable without our janitors. They deserve a great deal of credit for the extra hours they have put in for our good. sfnioii PLfly On November 8th, the Clarkston Seniors of ‘47’ presented, “Seven Sisters,” a three act comedy by Edith Ellis. SENIOR TRIP The Seniors of ’47 left Detroit, May 21, on the U.S.S. South American for a three day jaunt around Michigan. They arrived at Mackinaw Island on May 22, and there they spent a few pleasant hours looking over the sights of the Island. They left the Island and went on to Chicago where they had a few hours to do as they pleased, such as visit the Art Museum, take a tour of the city, or visit the large department stores. The Seniors left Chicago on a fast train and arrived in Detroit on the evening of May 23. HOT LUNCHES Hot lunches were started on January 15, by the Seniors of ’47 . The purpose of the hot lunches was to raise more money for our Senior trip. Hot lunches were served every Wednesday and the food was prepared by the student’s mothers. The Senior girls served every Wednesday and cleaned the kitchen after every use. Hot lunches turned out to be a very good money making project. SENIOR DANCE The first dance of the year was sponsored by the Seniors and was called the “Kick Off.” Decorations for the dance were goal posts and footballs. Kitty Rockwell was chairman of this committee. Music was furnished by Spike Master’s Dance Band and a good time was had by all. CHRISTMAS DANCE The Seniors sponsored the Christmas Dance which was held in the High School gymnasium on Friday, December the sixth. The music was furnished by the Community House Orchestra and there was both modern and old time dancing. The gym was decorated by three lighted Christmas trees, and a huge Santa Claus on the stage. This dance was a huge success and a good time was had by all. A Publication of UNIVERSITY LITHOPRINTERS Ymiianti, Michigan .
