ULU LVLULH 984-85 Was one of the most exciting sports years ever! The top story was the 1984 Summer Olympic Games held in Los Angeles. Organized and run by Peter Uberoth, now baseball's commissioner, the Olympics were the most successful games ever! American athletes were vic- torious throughout the competi- tion. Mary Lou Retton became America 's sweetheart by leading the Women's gymnastics team 1 w L with five medals won, including a gold. Mitch Gaylord was the force behind the men 's team by winning three medals, including a gold. Steve Lundquist, from Jonesboro, Georgia, made the American swim team winners by claiming four of the team 's 15 medals. The low point of the Olympics Was when Zola Budd of Great Britain, tripped up with Mary Decker going in to the final lap of their race. That incident rn ruined Mary's chances of win- ning the gold medal that every- one thought she would take. The Detroit Tigers Won their first World Series since 1968 when they beat the San Diego Padres, 4 games to 1. Pete Rose returned to Cinncinati after being gone for four years. He was named player! manager and revived the Reds during the last month of the sea- son. He needs only 94 hits to break Ty C'obb's all time hit re-

In Ethiopia, the hunger crisis prompted support and love of many all over the world to aid victims of the famine. Many orts were made by musicians, and politicians to alle- the suffering of the impov- African people. Mean- on the other side of the many people contributed fund the restoration of Ameri- ca 'S symbol of freedom, The Statue of Liberty. Despite the growing concern in the world for life, the massacre at a McDon- ald's restaurant in San Ysidro, California, resulted in the deaths of many innocent bystanders. There was more tragedy to fol- low . . . In Bhopal, India, a Union Car- bide chemical plant leaked a le- thal gas ca using hundreds of citi- zens to be left dead or permen- antly blinded. Due to the fact that the chemical company was owned by Americans, many peo- ple in India blamed the accident on the United States. Neverthe- less, this incident sparked the concern of people all over, that similar plants could be endan- gering the safety of their own communities. Despite the trage- dies, the world communities ex- hibited a great amount of love and concern for their fellow men.

iord. The Chicago Cubs won their Hrst pennant in 39 years. In football, Walter Payton broke the all time rushing record with 13,000 yards, beating Jim Brown 's 14 year mark of 12,000 yards. The Falcons sunk to a new low as William Andrews, Steve Bartkowski, and Billy White Shoes Johnson all went out with injuries. The Georgia Tech Yel- low Jackets pulled the upset of the year as they beat the Bull- dogs between the hedges at San- ford Stadium. BYU was named National Champs, but many dis- puted their Victory because of their light schedule. The Tech basketball team was ranked 5th in the polls, while Georgia fought a tight race in the SEC. Georgia beat Kentucky in Rupp Arena f I ' ,W y fe,,Q,,,5,, e ' for the Hrst time in 63 years. Tech beat North Carolina for the first time in 29 games as they upset the Tarheels in Carmichael Auditorium. With Tech playing such good basketball, Alexander Colisium became the Thriller- dome for all Tech fans and a menace for their ACC rivals. In the pro ranks, Dominque Wil- kins was named the KING OF THE SLAMDUNKQ and Bos- ton, Philadelphia, and the LA Lakers were the top teams. With- out a doubt, this has been one of the Hnest years in sports history. 219
