:3: riJgumEFgaa$w 1.71 133.. 5 Ali; CLARKSON COLLEGE OF TECHNOLOGY POTSDAM, NEW YORK INTRODUCTION As any staff does, we started the year with grand ideas and plans for a really different yearbook. We wanted more pictures and less copy, more candids and fewer formal pictures. We wanted a book that was more relevant and more indicative of life at Clarkson instead of a nostalgic journey down memory lane. We feel we succeeded somewhat and we hope you feel the same. Unfortunately, we were forced to work within a very limited budget this year. In spite of inflation and increasing prices, our budget was cut $3000 by the Student Senate. However, because of numerous comments and requests, the decision was made to include color, even though it meant cutting corners elsewhere. When each and every idea was considered for the yearbook, the first question that had to be asked was, How much does it cost? We included the community section because the college and community are integral parts of each other. All of you have lived in this community and by the time of your graduation you will have spent about four years here. You may not have noticed some of the aspects of Potsdam we have tried to present, but we hope you will appreciate them. If you find that this yearbook does not meet your expectations, we refuse to apologize. Save your two cents for the meetings next fall where they will surely be appreciated. WI 14 M m M 15 16 Potsdam is very fortunate that the generosity of the Clarkson family made possible the creation of a col- lege in our Village. From a modest beginning in 1896 it had grown to an institution of distinction, particu- larly in the fields of science and engineering. It strives for excellence in education for its some twenty-six hundred students. The college provides the townspeople with programs of a cultural and educational nature as well as sports events of which we would otherwise be deprived. We are a community of about ten thousand people. Considering the student population of the State Uni- versity College and Clarkson, the population is about equally divided between students and townspeople. The business community is well aware that educa- tion is the chief contributor to the economic base of our Village. We like to look upon the students as neighbors and citizens of Potsdam and hope that they feel they are part of the Village. This is substantiated, in part, by the numerous community projects they sponsor for the benefit of the health and welfare of citizens in the area. For this we are grateful. Communication between the academic and village community is very good. Each has an understanding and an appreciation of the activities of the other. Allllz, Beautiful Downtown Potsdam PEOPLE! 21 22 LITTLE PEOPLE! 24 25 V VVK w 'x V1 MANY-SIDED POTSDAM 27 29 I think that I shall never see . . . 31 COLLEGE 34 35 37 38 39 4o The relations between a small-college faculty mem- ber and his students differ from most of his relations with others because he doesn't have to live in a dorm, because he gets better food, because he doesn't have any place to go during vacations, because he has a dif- ferent attitude toward money, because it's more inter- esting to talk than to be talked at, and because he is a man who continuously faces the ghost of his own past. Among jobs in which a person must deal with a pub- lic, this is certainly one of the best-rewarded in any of the various terms that count. Donald Purcell 44 47 REFLECTIONS As an alumnus of Clarkson I find myself, on occa- sion, comparing the Clarkson of yesteryear with the Clarkson of today tand tomorrowl. It is my contention that Clarkson is not a perfect place, if in fact there is such a place, but Clarkson has certainly come a long way toward becoming a better place. A partial list of the positive changes which have tak- en place at Clarkson might include the following: 1. Construction of badly needed and better physical plant. 2. Reorganization of the administrative structure. 3. Curricular revisions. 4. Creation of a consortium involving Clarkson and her nearby sister institutions. 5. Restructuring of the governance mechanism to in- clude students, faculty and administration. 6.1mprovement in the calibre and qualifications of the faculty. 7. Development of substantial research and graduate programs. It is obvious that such positive changes could not help but enhance the reputation of any college. Yet, there is much that remains to be done if Clark- son is to come closer to being a perfect place. Surely such a dream will come closer to reality if there is mu- tual understanding, respect and concern among all seg- ments of the college community. Let us all work to- ward developing such mutual feelings. If we are suce cessf'ul I am confident that Clarkson will become an even better place. Did the movement exist in fall of 1969? I don't remember ever hearing about liberation then. Yet today, women's lib is as controversial as peace, poverty, pollution and people. In '69 the question of utmost importance was asked, answered, debated and fought over. Why did you come to Clarkson? I was to hear it over and over, and search for the answer within myself as did the other girls. I wondered why we couldnt be here; why it was so unusu- al for girls to want a technical andIor business orientated education. The reasons why we came to Clarkson were soon forgotten; we had to decide whether or not to stay here. Our decisions to remain in a Chosen academic ca- reer can probably be parallelled by male students who remained. But for us the decision was harder to make. Our upbringing had stressed traditional roles of women in society, roles that were safe and allowed . Our male peers gave us approval when we wore dresses to class and kept our mouths shut. Our house mother in I-IoIcroft rewarded us when we were prim and proper young ladies to be placed on pedestals and not capable of enjoying a Physics I class. Who were we using as a model? Were we to be misfits for life because we were intelligent? Why weren't boys and girls given the same options from childhood? Dick and Jane showed us the way in first grade; Dick was adventurous and imaginative, Jane was docile and a mini- Morn equipped with a broom. The brain-washing contin- ued until we were in high school. There boys were men and girls were tramps, when introduced to sex. The double standard we grew up with was the only standard we had. So some of us rejected the standard and com- menced survival campaignse-searching for a philosophy and understanding of our lives. As a questioning generation it is time for each of us to ponder the role playing between the sexes in today's society. Women's liberation is only a press title if it is not shaped by individuals to their needs and desires in life. In the Future you might have plans for marriage andIor a family. If you decide to have children, remember to take care in their education; do not Close the door to any opportunity because they are male or female. Joan Matranga 'ML. Four black and white prints were washed over by Keller in red, blue and yellow. The text type is 10 pt. Palatino copy and the picture captions and Senior Directory are 8 pt. Palatino. The divider headings are 36 pt. Helvetica Bold Italic and other headings are 24 and 36 pt. Palatino Semibold. Four transparencies were Lithographed on a four-color cover by Wm. J. Keller.
